Here are some videos of me running my horses. This one is Rebel's first run in 7months without even a tuneup. She literally hadn't seen a barrel in that long..sloppy run but she was 2nd in 2D.
YouTube- Rebel at local JP. January
Here is one of Tempy. She hadn't ran in a while and the first barrel was BAD...she's fat too. She was 2nd in youth 1D.

Thanks! yeah she is quick. She's only a 3yr old and she's got a lot to clean up on her pattern, but once we do she'll be runnin with the big dogs!lol I normally run her in a smooth snaffle, but here lately I use a Jr Cowhorse bit on her. Gets a little more rate and flexion.

That first video of Tempy, she had an AWESOME second turn, she slid right around that barrel.
Very good vids, that arena looks tiny! I'm used to a 17 sec being fast for the big arenas we have around here.

Well, not very hard at all. Just enough to pattern her (maybe once a month or so) then once she knew the pattern and was good at it I'd haul her more. Like twice a month. BUT I always made sure the ground was really deep and soft. If it wasn't I wouldn't run her. She's comin 4 in April so i can run her hard this year..well I say hard, not like every weekend, but more than last year. I dont just do barrels on her though. She does western pleasure, halter, and reining. That way I keep her mind good.

Sorry it's not the best video ever..The lady that bred her and owns her sire was taking it and she was doing more yelling than videoing.lol

Sure I'm always open for advice! yeah I've been told that before and I really need to stop doing that:( it's so hard not to in that pen because it's SO quick after the timer that you have to stop. They didnt have a alleyway until recently...which is SO awesome now!lol:p Thanks for the advice! I really appreciate it;)

This is what I normally do, ( circle after my run ) but I recently read some where( don't remember where) that it's better just to rate down in a straighter line and slow that way than turning into a circle, now if you're swinging a wide circle when stopping I can't see that hurting, maybe there were talking about turning a tight circle to stop.
Theerebel i do the same thing, my hubby has been yelling at me since I started showing in front of him, "DON"T STOP UNTIL YOU"RE PAST THE TIMER!" LOL. Our shows dont have an alley way ( the ones around here, hoping to have found some new ones this year) so like you, I don't have much room to stop.

02-27-2010, 05:28 PM
Not that Im even close to you guys in your riding(I used to game alot in my younger yrs)and I also used to make circles at the end.
We had a girl get her horse jammed right in the fence going straight in without doing circles. Horse ended up with a huge gouge in its neck. That horse needed a vet, and I know IF it made it it will always have a huge hole type scar on its neck. Instead, they just sprayed WD40 on it to stop the bleeding. This happened like 4 yrs ago.
I quit riding there because of ill mannered horse owners. Long stupid scary story.
Not saying that would happen to you. I agree with the circles.

i have made large circles and some small depending on the arena im in i have had the alley ways to run in i dont use them unless it is.. Alley gate timers .... i hate running small patterns... Runner really disliked them also .. i never did have a small pattern horse. lol like i said tho you look good keep your head up and look around to your next barrel too and youll shave some time there also.

03-01-2010, 03:34 PM
Thanks for all the input guys! The only reason I dont circle her is she is green and she is the kind of horse that if you do it once she remembers it. I did it once and she started anticipating them WAY too soon and would start to turn a circle at the end before I wanted her to. I normally run in an alleyway but those shows didnt have one. I didnt want her to get in the habit of starting to turn..lol I just say what the heck and rate her (if I have to) right at the timer..rather have her safe than get another half second off. Once she gets seasoned more I'll start to try and turn her again.

I work slow work on her every time I ride her...which is almost every day. I NEVER let her look at a barrel unless she's at a show running. I'll work on turns and roll backs, but WITHOUT the barrel. Too much is a bad thing..and I want her to keep her mind so I only do slow work. I'll breeze her the day before a race for a quarter mile in a straight line, but that's the only running she ever does except at shows...hope that helps!:)

LOVE LOVE LOVE your mindset on this! We, as barrel racers, get such a bad rep for only running our horses...its nice to know their are still people out there who keep their horses mindframe as a priority.

Oh I know. Us barrel racers get a bad rap a lotta times for running our horses crazy. But I train all my horses to where I can go out and run barrels, place, then in 15 min later go put them in the pleasure pen and place as well. I do EVERYTHING on my horses just for that reason. I dont want them acting nutty or high strung. You will see Tempy and Rebel get excited when they enter the arena, there is a fine line between excited and nutty. I will never let them cross it.
Peggy Sue- Thanks so much for the compliment. I try my best to keep my horses minds good and not just thinking about speed.
valleyrider- I have a few more vidoes that I will post as soon as I get em uploaded. I'm running this friday so I'll post video from then..plus I have BBR Barrel Bash at Columbia, MO comin up too;)
With the 4 year old, I would ice the hock and knees(like on the trailer ride home). Seen a lot of young horses that don't run pass 8, because they are ran young and not taken care of after. Yours look great though, keep that golden horse from dropping that shoulder though ;)

Well I am going to be runnin both Rebel and Tempy tomorrow night. Neither have been ran in a few months so we'll see how it goes! The next weekend (26th, 27th,28th) I run them both a BBR Barrel Bash in Columbia. It's a pretty big show with probably close to 350 horses or more running. So far Tempy is ON so let's hope she stays that way through next weekend! This one tomorrow is just a little tune up for the big one. Just do a couple trainers on her then put Rebel in Open. Not sure if I'll run Tempy in Open too or not. The less you run her the better she seems to get when she comes off a lay off. Rebel's the kind that you have to run maybe 3 times before she's on her A game.

Cool I wished in a way that I had a barrel horse. I might have one coming up though in 2 years. Caddo loves to run right now even out in the pasture. I will see how he does starting next Spring once he is started under saddle. Maybe by the time that he is 3 years old we will be doing some barrels as well. TheeRebel you won't mind me picking your brains about how to train him will you?

Pick away all you want!lol Ok maybe I shoulda worded that I little better..haha. No I dont mind at all. happy to help! barrels are a lot of fun. I started out showing western pleasure, english, and halter, but once I started messing with barrels it was all over. That's pretty much all i do now. On occasion I'll go to a show 'show' but mostly it's barrels. And ARHA.;)

I wish more of our younger girls thought this way. All they do is pull their horses out for the gymkhana's, run the snot out of them and then put them away. UGH!!! I just want to rip some of those girls off their horses!!
I am like you... I like to do everything with my horses. I'm taking Dallas on a competitiver trail ride on Saturday and then on a gymkhana on Sunday.

I totally agree with you on that statement. So many times the only time they work their horses is to RUN them. Or if they have a barrel horse what they do to 'work' the horse is go out and run 20 some barrel runs on it. I'm like and you honestly wonder why it acts the way it does!?? To them that is working their horse:nono: Or they dont even do that and only ride it when they go to a race. I don't even DO barrels at home. they never see a barrel unless I take them to a show. If I have a problem then I'll take them out and fix it...at the walk or trot, but that's the ONLY time they ever see a barrel. I just work on other stuff with them. Take em on trail rides, i work a LOT on reining as it gets them giving and softens up their rib cage. And I'll do some roll backs, slow spins, lead changes and stuff like that. Then go back to 'western pleasure' stuff and slow lope and slow jog. Two days before a race I'll quarter mile breeze them but thats the only running they ever do.
Oh I ran on Friday and was 2nd and 4th in Open 1D. Tempy ran a 14.4 and Rebel ran a 15.002. It was one of Rebel's personal best times so far. Tempy could have done better but I got the first barrel fixed and she didnt drop her shoulder so I didnt care what her time was. I leave this Friday for BBR Barrel Bash at Columbia. Its WPRA sanctioned although im not a member. Should be some stiff compitition. I think they are showing web cam of it on barrel horse world, but not 100% sure.

LOL... yeah, I do a LOT of slow work. But I do use the barrels and any other props I know that are coming up in the gymkhanas.
I see some of these girls get so mad at their horse because all the horse wants to do is RUN everytime they get on them. Gee... I wonder why?? Since all they do is RUN their horses!!! Half of them don't even know what slow work is!
I am by no means a speed demon yet. I do much better riding my kids horse on the barrels as she is patterned and knows what to do. My little Dallas is still learning, but coming along pretty well. We are almost ready to start adding some speed...as long as he does it without bucking....

Oh I know!! Im like DUH! He's just doing what you always make him do..RUN! So what do they normally do? Put a bigger bit on them, not go back to basics and slow work. Most of them when you suggest that look at you like "Umm, this is a BARREL horse, BARREL horses DON'T do slow work"..umm, beg your pardon, yes that's what makes them good!lol
I agree with you too Vicky, they need to know how to ride before they attempt that. That's why I did pleasure for so long, it tought me ballance and a whole lot of other skills. And I normally never ride in a saddle either. It keeps my ballance good.
Well, off tomorrow to the big race! Tempy is working like a pro so hopefully she'll run good for me. I also looked at the draw and was SHOCKED to see the Mesa Leavitt (the only youth Barrel Racing Triple Crown Winner) is running BOTH her horses there. her good one and her backup..ohhhh I'm nervous now! She is younger than me, but has the best horses in the nation. Google her and you'll see what I mean:eek:

I got your message when you called yesterday..I'll give you a call back today.
Tempy was ON last weekend at Columbia. I drew the 56th slot in Youth on Saturday and the leading time was a 14.7. I was like oh heck I'll shoot for a 14.8 and see what happens. There were about 10 left after me to run but all the fast people had already ran. She went in there and ran a 14.657!! Ended up winning Youth!! I've never won Youth or even placed good at All Districts before. Then I'd drawn the 9th spot in Open and it was like 20min later that I had to go run that. She went in there and ran a 14.651! She ran the exact same run as in youth just a tick faster. We ended up getting 4th in Open out of 184 head. Let's just say i was SHOCKED. Then I was thinking it was just a fluke and she wouldnt' run that great on Sunday..well I went in there and saw id' drawn 56th slot again..(I love being close to last). When I ran there was a 14.6 again leading it. I was like well, we'll shoot for a 14.5. She ran what I thought was a ok pattern, wide on the first and a few bobbles but when I heard the time I literally about fell out of the saddle. A 14.355!!! She SMOKED them. She won youth and the 2nd place horse had ran a 14.6:eek: I was so happy. In Open she ran a 14.6 again and was 3rd out of about the same # of horses. I dont know how she ran the 14.3 but it held as the fastest time of the whole entire weekend. Too bad she did it in Youth and not open but I dont really care..I was just so SHOCKED that she did it..

He wont be ready to run for a while. He needs patterned a lot more before I could add any kind of speed. I need to take him to a show and see how he does but only shows Ive been going to are BIG races and I haven't wanted to test him out at one that big. Wouldn't be fair to him. I think I'll haul him up to Mountain View here in a week or two and see how he does there. Its' a small show and good for just getting out and warming horses up.

ok here is the Saturday Youth run. She won it with a 14.576. As you can see she's still got a lot of room for improvement :)

They do. I've seen 13 second runs. Corona doesn't like the small patterns, so we avoid them. Bud likes the small patterns, but corona likes longer straightaways haha

ok so been trying to upload the other three videos from All District on youtube but they are not uploading. Keeps saying Error and thats all it says...ughh. Anyway, maybe someday I'll get it figured out. Also, am headed off to the American Royal barrel Bonanza next week. Starting Thursday is when we're leaving. Bout 5in the morning.:( Get there around noon, get set up and then do a quick trainer run on her. Then the races start friday. First race is Friday, second Saturday, and third is Sunday. For any of you who want to watch it it's live camed on www.barrelhorseworld.com (http://www.barrelhorseworld.com) or you can go to www.americanroyalbarrelrace.com (http://www.americanroyalbarrelrace.com) and find the link to it there too. I run 12 on Friday (all races start at 9am) 117 on Saturday and 84 on Sunday. Friday I'm running for saddles so I'm hoping she has a good run. Hope some of you who needa kill a little time can watch it!

Hope none of you guys watched that because she was TERRIBLE all weekend. Not sure what was up with her but she had some BAD runs. Ok I've hit a barrel a total of three times in all the time that ive ran her...well this weekend made the 3rd time :( She had a clean run on Sunday (Finally) but she just didnt have any gas in her tank. Kinda like what the announcer said about one of the horses in the Preakness...jockey just had no horse..So not sure what was up with her. Oh well, state championships are next and she LOVES that arena so should be good.

Wow! You're really competitive. Great job.
She is 3/4... Might be a big reason why she had a few bad runs...

yeah thats what I figured too. She's 4. Plus we had a 6hr drive there so that was another huge factor I'm guessing too. she was just tired and out of it..poor baby.lol She ran too hard on Friday, then perfect on Saturday (only I was the one that hit the barrel) and then had no steam sunday. I think she just wore herself out.

Well, what were your times?
Your good, dont fret a bad weekend.
How did City do on the trip?

Well my one time with the little detour was a 19something. :( The other times were 16.018 (the one I hit a barrel and let her lope home.Man what if I'd pushed her!? beacuse a 15.5 won it) and 16.514. the 16.514 on Sunday actually placed me. I got 7th in 3D and it paid well so I was happy. City did very well :) I just got all four of my wisdom teeth out yesterday so I cant ride for a while...ughhh that's gonna drive me crazy. But my mouth hurts SOOOO bad and is so swollen I dont think I'd want too.lol

All 4 at once, ouchy man.
I hope you heal up soon and can get back out and ride.
Im glad City did well for you. I knew he would, he loves going places.
Remember, he used to travel with Chris, and he has always loved it when I hooked up the trailer. He is a goer, have faith in him and he will take you far.
Got any new funny City stories?
