View Full Version : What do you call the forum in real life?

Today when I was talking to my husband I wondered what everyone on here says about the forum in real life.
Do you refer to fellow forumers as friends, online friends, etc.? Or do you say you are on a horse forum and so and so says...??
I usually just say "my friend" to keep things simple. Sometimes my hubby will give me THE LOOK  that says, "mmm.mmm... the FORUM friend". lol.

I call it the "horse forum", and you are all my "forum friends". My wife is very understanding of how much I like to socialize on the forum as long as I get my stuff done around the house. :)

When I tell my mom stuff I just say that I asked people on the forum, or friends from the forum.

Since Diane and I both frequent the forum we usually call everyone by their forum name. You know, "Did you see what WB said or Cloedoll or JackieB or whomever" and we both know who we are talking about. It's like an extension of our family really. We now have to use Wbay or Wboy instead of the WB tag though.

This is the horse forum and I say a friend on the forum when I'm referring to someone.
Sundays Man - That's how me and Taylor and my other friends that belong to the forum talk, ha ha. We just know who is who, pretty fun, eh? xD

Ya'll are my 'horsey friends!!'. But when I'm referring to something from the board I usually just say 'my friend' and leave it at that. I'm a stay at home Mom so ya'll are my society! Otherwise I'd be stuck talking to a 3 year old all day and while I do spend most of the day doing that it's nice to talk to grownups too!

This is why, a couple of months ago, I launched a serious effort to learn everyone's real name. The ones I have committed to memory should feel special... because I've been known to forget Will's name on occasion. :D I know a significant number of names; it's fairly impressive.
When I talk to Will or Michelle (both at least lurk on the forum a relatively significant amount of the time) I use real names or forum names "Beth posted an update on Miles" or "JackieB posted pictures of Buster!" But when I talk a friend who doesn't come to the forum I just say "a friend on a horse forum I belong to..." or, if they know I'm part of an insanely-close forum then I say "someone on the forum".
When I'm talking to my mother or Nana I just use everyone's first names, to keep them from getting confused ('cause really - "iheart said..." just sounds weird, and even I recognize that :p).
To keep things simple I say "horse friends" - I got sick of explaining "forum" to some of the people around work.

What's a forum? I talk on a D Board, (discussion board) to my inner-net friends.
WE are from all over the US, Canada, and the world. (Europe and Austraila (the kangroo place) also one muslum Esam, from Lybia perhaps.
On my UDBB dressage board they are 'oh wise UDBBers" or BBers.
Not sure what a BB is yet and yes am afraid to ask. LOL.
On this board (ya all from Country Supply board) everybody debates with honer and respect. Either you had great moderators, or your awesome or both. LOL.

We could be twins I think! But now I'm jealous that yours is potty trained and mine isn't. :(
I got tired of saying "the forum I belong to" to friends and family too.

My SO is what I call "forum trained"!
Many times when the weather turns sour in some part of the country, I'll hear him holler from the bedroom,"Any of your forum friends live in blank?"(Fill in the state)! Or it will be, "Doesn't so-and-so live in blank? Better check and see if there's a thread up!"
He pretty much knows who I'm talking about for the most part, so I don't have too much trouble at home.
I have more trouble with my friends, clarifying that the person I may be talking about is on my horse forum!
Good example would be, "Washington Bay? Where's that?":D

I call it "the horse forum" and posters are "this girl/guy on 'the forum'," unless I'm talking to Sunday's Man or Diane, as SM posted above.
And ALOK.. I had to laugh. I read your post and wondered to myself if, perhaps, I were one of those special people whose real name you had committed to memory.
If you can't find the humor in that, it might be past your bedtime. :)

Carla - I laughed! Not past my bedtime yet! I actually almost used you or Diane as a reference about the real name/forum name thing and realized that it didn't quite have the affect I was working towards. :D

I have met a couple people online, I refer to some of them as who they are when talking about them. Others are forum friends(thats not a bad thing). Then I break it down to which forum. See, I would say, so and so on WBs forum, or so and so on HCs forum, and on and on. It really depends on who Im talking to though. Some have no clue, so I just stick with my forum friend. I do explain to some that we are like a family. They give me weird looks, but I dont care, cause they have NO clue.

Well... I used to use forum names around the house but it drove hubby crazy - he wanted people to have real names.:) He now asks about Katie, Diana, Beth and "that Seahawk fan guy" :D, recognizes a few other names too! To other friends and family I use "friend from the forum" and most of them know what I'm talking about. I have to admit, for some people who don't do the "forum thing" it is hard to understand - they look at me like I'm crazy when I talk about someone and then they realize I've never met the person face to face. At first I heard a few "oh - a cyberspace person" but I think now those close to me no NOT to go there as I feel pretty close to some of you.

I have a friend from another forum who moved out here from Colorado and lives right next door... she's been here about two years now I think and I still usually call her by her screen name, not her real name. :)
Hey... I'm doing well if I call my hubby by his real name. ;)

Hey Mollie...BB means Bulletin Board. And WOW you live in georgeous country!!! Next time you organize a ride, I want to be second (or third) in line. I don't do heights well if I can't follow someone.....;)

I belong to 3 different people, so I normally I just say my friends to keep it simple, but if they ask this forum is the horse forum. I've also got a fish forum and chicken forum(but I've met some of the chicken forum people, so I know them by first name)
I usually say "the Horse forum". If I can't decide what I want to do my mom always says "ask the Horse forum people"! lol!

I refer to you as "my friends". I am still trying to get everyone's name straight. My daughter was on the horse forum and it was so much fun to be able to use your screen names and she knew exactly who I was talking about!
I have learned so much from each of ya'll, laughed with ya'll, cried with ya'll, argued with ya'll and yes even cussed once in a while at ya'll.:p But in the end, I get up, put my big girl panties on, dust my self off and come right on back for another dose.
When I am talking to another horse person I say, someone on a horse forum I belong to said........!

Back in the day, the very early days of the internet, I was a Stay at home mom and belonged to a SAHM forum on AOL. Hard to believe but we had dial up! Well we were so close on that forum that we had SAHM get togethers all over the country. I went to NYC and had a SAHM weekend! We made friendship quilts for new babies, had photo swaps (way before you could post picts on the net!), a recipe swap with someone making a recipe book (that I still have and use all the time). We were there for each other through bad times (one member's 5 y/o daughter drowned in her pool):(, miscarriages, divorces and good times, new babies, kids being potty trained, starting school and growing up. Then there was a big blow up and the forum dissolved. I went back to work and lost touch with everyone. I still miss them.
That is why I try to keep things civil and appreciate that every one has their own opinion, I don't have to agree but I still respect it because I count on each and everyone of you. Just look how you have been there for me with Kabota.
Sorry for the long post.............but you asked!

Since no one at work is "horsey", I refer to the horse forum and this man/woman/person on the forum said...to my husband, it's "the forum". When Darby's neck problem started, hubby suggested I post a question on the forum. Surprised me.
Have you ever noticed how non-horsey peoples eyes glaze over when you start talking about your horses?

Horseless you crack me up!!
I have been a member of another forum for going on 6yrs now and we used to have BBQ's and parties. I know many of them in person and have ridden with quite a few when I lived back in New England, we called it the Yellow Board, because, well it's yellow. but it is also a horsey BB. We used to wear signs to the Equine Affaire in MA with our user names and met up for lunch and stuff. We were a close knit group.
I know many of the poster real names but I still refer to them by their handles! I will forever be "Java" to them on the yellow board! lol I am a lurker there now as the BB went through a overhaul and now I can't navigate it, plus many posters have left to other forums too.
I just refer to you all as my horsey friends and occasionally say from the H.com forum or the Yellow board and recently added WB's forum to the list! :D

I just say my 'friends' or 'online friends', depending on who I am talking to. (I have found that if I use the term 'horse forum', alot of people look at me as if I've lost my mind.) DH reads alot of the more interesting threads so I can use online names with him & he knows who I am talking about so that's nice.

Well FoxFire, if we ever make it to MD for a show, I will definitely let you know. And if you are ever coming through NC, let me know.
FWIW, I have never met Syble, but we became good friends when we adopted Ludicris and Lily and still talk on the phone at least once a week, schedules permitting. She has the weirdest work schedule:p And I consider her one of my dearest friends and always will.
We have strong bonds that tie for one thing or another and we may never meet face to face but I still consider many of you my friends. Even Horseless..........

Yes, I do find that I get strange looks when I say "forum" or "online board" to people around me, like hubby's family. They look at me like I have two heads. None of them are on the computer much, so they don't have a clue what I'm talking about.
