Has anyone ever done the locks of love donation of hair. The website says 10 inches, I have way more than that! :) I have been planing on doing this for a few months now. I was wondering if anyone had done it? If you went to a salon and they covered it or ? I don't really want to just wack off my pony tail and then wonder what to do with my hair that is still on my head! ;)

I donated my hair when I was in 6th grade. My mother never was allowed to have long hair so she kept my long only tirming it until I decided I wanted to donate it. I donated 12 inches and still have shoulder length hair. I had it done at a salon, they braided it and then cut it off. I am really happy with my decision to do that and now my hair is really long again (not as long though) I am debating whether to donate it again!

I was getting a good amount cut off mine a couple years back and the girl doing my hair asked me if I would consider 2 more inches so that it could go to locks of love. Sure I did it and they took care of everything. Call your local salons until you find one that will do it for you.

Well at the moment I have about 14 inches or more from my shoulders down. I would like to at least keep shoulder leighth hair!

Thank you for the advice. I was hoping the salon I like will do the haircut!

Thats great fire for even thinking about doing that! And of course all those that have done that. I am sure someone is very thankful that you are willing to do that for them!

My niece donated 12 inches of hers 3 years ago. The salon took care of the whole thing. My oldest daughter is currently growing hers out because she would like to donate hers as well. My daughter has a ways to go yet though. To be left with the shortest length she's willing to have she still has to grow out about 6 more inches. Maybe next year though. I think its a wonderful thing to do.

Usually the salon will cover your cut if you are donating. My boyfriend donated his hair about 2 years ago but we did it at home because we just buzzed his head after. :) Goodluck!

I would say look on theur website and they will tell you who does it in your area. They are ususally pretty picy as far as color treated and chemical stuff . At least they were when I looked into it a few years ago. Ususally the salon will cover the cost of the cut for you. Good luck and I think it is great that you are thinking about doing it.

I've done it twice and the salon cut & styled it free. I would do it again if I could put up with the long hair. It's nice of you to do.

Very funny horseless!!

I made the appointment and I go in on friday to get it taken off! I was worried about it cause I like long hair, but right now my hair is longer than my arms when I try to brush it or wash it, so it is time for a change, besides it will always grow back! I measured to make sure i wouldn't be getting rid of all my hair! It is 16 inches from the base of my neck to the botom of my hair in a pony tail. SO that is plenty of hair left over and a good amount to donate! It is for a good cause and my hair grows pretty quickly, might have to make this a tradition. :):)

When I had all my hair cut off (HUGE mistake, I looked like a boy:doh::mad::(-- soooooo glad it has all grown back now!), I had maybe ten inches taken off? Something like that.. but not quite long enough for Locks of Love. So the salon sent it to one called "Wigs for Kids" because their length requirement was an inch or so shorter.

I donate my hair ALL the time, it really grows that fast. They cut it off in the ponytail, dry. My hair stylist cuts mine off in four ponytales, and then we put it in a bag, I bring it home, and off it goes!!! They will actually accept less than the amount of hair they list because they make shorter wigs as well, but the longer the better since they can do so much with it.

I love donating my hair and think it's wonderful that I am lucky mine grows fast enough to be able to do it pretty frequently.

ETA: I have donated as little as six inches...

I did it about two years ago, just went to my regular stylist and she took care of the hair.

I've never had hair long enough to do it, but I wish I did! Maybe one day when I find the patience to grow it out I will donate! :)

My granddaughter is growing hers out now for this very thing. Years ago when I got my hair cut short for the first time, I didn't know about this or they didn't have it.

I think it's a wonderful thing to do.

I cut off 12" last year to donate - my fiance's Mom cut it off and fixed my hair. :) Very cool! A cousin of mine had cancer as a child, and she's still bald from treatment now that she's in her early 20s - Locks of Love gave her a wig every year until she quit growing... and that's the wig she still wears today. :)

While there are salons that will cut and ship your hair out for free, if you want to go to your normal stylist, just look at the website and you can fill out a form, which has instructions for how to pack your hair and where to ship it to. I have done it now 3 times and will probably cut it after next ski season. I have an unusual color, and it grows quick and thick, so will probably keep doing it till I go gray!
