I picked these little guys up yesterday. I was very impressed with the small operation we got them from. The pens were very nice and clean, all the birds looked healthy and there was no sign of overcrowding at all. With all the horror stories I've heard about chicken breeders, I was pleasantly surprised when I visited this breeder. Now she does let a portion of her birds free-range so had some mixed chicks available as well - but I loved them. I found them more interesting than the purebreds.

Here are the ones we picked out - named already as well. ;D

Cochin (ones with the feathered legs):

Penny (cause she looks like a baby penguin right now):

And finally my rooster. He is a Cochin mix. They don't know if the daddy was a laced wayndotte or the cochin bantam - both could have produced this feather pattern. I can't wait to see how he looks as he gets older. We call him Picasso.

Beautiful chickens.

I loved that barred rock mix. Do you know what it's crossed with? I have barred rocks and barred x araucana mixes and they don't look nearly as pretty as that one.

I'd like to get some immature chickens next month, too, to add to our flock. We have a lot of barred rocks, araucanas and rhode island reds and I'd like to add a little variety to the bunch.

I'm not sure what she is crossed with. I'm wondering if it might be silver laced wyandotte for the other half.

The farm had cochins, buff orps, bantam buff rocks, barred rocks, and a few silver laced wyandottes.

They are all cute. My mom loved Buff Orpintons. When dad was alive they had all kinds of chicken, buffs, doms, those chickens that had the top knots, can't think of them now but her and dad used to call them ubangy chickens. lol She loved the buffs as she said they were the best layers besides the Leghorns. I have always loved the bantams, but with the cats I have they would be game for them to catch. lol

We had a rooster that my mom got in a yard sale free, when she moved hubby and I inherited him. He was a game cross. He finally died before winter as he was really old and the first cold snap we had in November got him. Though he had a place to go into at night, he always roosted in the tulip poplar next to the house.
