View Full Version : What's going on here? Bumps on Cyn

What's going on here with Cyn? She's got some bumps I noticed the other day... look a little like hives, or what I've heard called 'protein bumps'.
It's not the first time she's had these passing bumps, but I've never been real clear on what causes them. And this is the first time I've noticed that they're actually a bit scabby and will peel off. The skin underneath looks fine. Even has new coat growing already...

Any ideas?
She does have them on both sides... only on the barrel, or torso. General condition shot... Whether you can actually see the bumps at this angle depends on whether you know where to look... some of what you see here are just dapples, the rough patches are the bumps.

I don't know. Does she have allergies? Spring bug bites?

I think IF they are "protein bumps" those are associated with a food allergy, but I'm not sure what it'd be. They come and go in the past, on her.
We don't have a lot of bugs yet, and most recently, she's been blanketed the last few days, so they're not in the most bug-accessible area.

Is there anything that was stuck in the blanket poking her? Pine needles etc? Do they show up just after you wash the blanket? Maybe she's allergic to the detergent?

Blanket hasn't been washed all winter and I don't think there's anything stuck in it.

She is so Pretty!!!! What a cute face and I love her hair, it's beautiful! I don't know what they are but I'm guessing an allergy too because my Dommie used to get the same exact looking bumps every spring. I think his were a result of an allergy to May Flies because it was always when they were out and biting. They would go away in a short amount of time. I used to put something on them but for the life of me I can't remember what it was, cortosone cream maybe. Rompy gets little bumps from the bugs too, different though, his are smaller and not as noticable they are felt more than seen but Dommie's were just like Cyn's and in the same places too, with Dommie's I always forgot to ask the vet because he woudln't have them when the vet would come for shots. Hope you find out what is causing them and they go away.

It's OK... I don't think she's gonna die from these bumps... I think it's curious and would like to know why they seem to appear on her from time to time.
FWIW, Bay doesn't have any.

Is it like a heat rash? From the warmer weather and the blanket? (Had another one in me after all :p)

It hasn't been that warm. It was cold and wet and even freezing at night, that's why the blankets were back on. Took them off today because it's 40 and might actually be dry most of today.

You know... I think my hubby bought her for her bangs... and he's a guy. ;)
She does have good bangs. I think the rest of her mane is looking a bit scraggly... her blanket does a number on it in winter.

Looks like what Farah had a few years ago. It was just one whelp about the size of a half dollar and it went down on its own within 1-2 days.
I know diphenhydramine helped Farah when she got a bad case of the hives last year. Cant remember the dose but I know it was ALOT lol

I'm thinkin... Did you have to buy new hay this spring? Or is it the same stuff they've been eating? New supplement, wormer, anything? Did they get their shots recently? Oh! new spring plants coming up she may be rolling on?

Does this happen about this time every spring?

Perhaps the straps on the blanket are rubbing her and agitating her skin where they touch her. Perhaps just getting wet and drying in an awkward shape other than flat and just get her sometimes.

What about hives?? from the shavings in her stall or wherever she sleeps??? I also think this is an allergic reaction and does an anti-histamine help???

Taz used to have those show up on his neck and barrel, they never worried me, I always figured they were from mosquitos or something. Delicate, thin-skinned Arabians!

Oh boy. I hope they go away soon on their own. Skin problems can be so frustrating.

No real suggestions. Snicka looked like that when we had her, but it was a bug allergy.
Just had to say (again) that I agree and she does just have such a nice head and "bangs"! :)

Could be from a # of things - something she ate in the field or in a flake of hay but as long as they go away in a few days - nothing to worry about, just my thougths.

Those could be tick bites, some horses are much more allergic to them than others, and i've seen horses with reactions that big. You could see if you could find the ticks, but right now they could be at the infant stage, so they're extremely small and hard to see. Deworming with Ivermectin kills them, so does something like Equi-Spot.
ETA: Are they itchy? Tick bites are reeeaaallly itchy.

Could it be some form of mild rain rot? When she lays down her blanket could get wet on the sides and take a while to dry causing skin irritation, then the skin welts up and flakes off the top layer? It seems to be where the blanket would lay against the sides of her barrel. The straps on the blanket would hold it against her sides.

I don't think they're ticks. I've never seen a tick here.
And... I've been a bit too busy to notice yesterday or today if she still has them or new ones.
They don't seem particularly itchy... I think they're hives... from some kind of allergic or dietary, internal cause, that seems to come and go. I haven't noticed enough about when they come to narrow it down.

I now want to move to WA based soley on the fact that you don't have ticks there. :)

This part of Washington in particular doesn't have ticks. :) I've only ever seen one tick in my life, on a dog, after we went camping at a state park in another part of the state, years ago. Creepy creatures. Turned into a bit of a fiasco because it was right on my dog's eyelid, and I pulled it off pinching it between my fingers... and I looked at it real close to see if the head had come off, and it wiggled it's little legs and I think it made a teeny squeaking noise and I *lost* my composure, shrieked, threw the thing straight in the air, and spent the next few days fumigating that room with every chemical I could find. I still thought it was probably in there somewhere... Really gave me the willies

LMBO WB, you SOO need to come to MO and ride the woods here. I think ticks are the state bug. Probably why Im so hated, I kill everything that crawls or flies this time of yr, unless its a bird.

Or you could come up here!:D Not only do we have probably almost as many ticks as Vicky, but we have all the mosquitoes, too! I think those are the state bird here, not the loon, lol!

Snip had those for about 2 days, I put people benadryl cream on them, I assumed hers were bee stings, hmm.
