Well we took this stitches out today and with no sedation at that. Everything is sealed up which is great and I just have to keep the huge bandage on for 3 more days to be safe. The vet comes back in 2 weeks to do all the injections and then after that I can start light turnout in a small confined area. I took him for a 20 min walk and than a graze session after that as the temp was 63, hey in Nov. in Maine we love that. I did ask the vet first and she said that it was fine. We had a long discussion about supplements for his tendons and I am starting something new to aide. She also said the sedative issue is up to me and I decided to go with tryptophan instead of sticking with the recerpine, not only for the price but due to the lose poo issue.
I will post some pics. soon, but I am having computer issues.
Still keeping fingers and toes crossed.:)

Good news! Definitely let us know how the tryptophan works. I'm glad you have nice weather so that you can both at least enjoy the time out of the stall.

I am glad to hear that he is getting well. I am sure you are looking forward to turning him out soon. Even if it is a small area. He can at least move a little bit and I am sure that will help.

Well Sir Poo Head this a.m. wanted to buck in his stall. My stalls have concrete for the first few feet up. Needless to say we had a coversation about how to act in his stall. I started the Tryp. this a.m., double dose. I went up to the house showered and got ready for work then went back down to the barn and he was doing better. He so needs to be out and work.
It is rainy, but warm today so we will be playing in puddles today on our walk. It seems nice to be able to not care about him getting wet for a change.
I will work on more pics soon.

He was a good boy on our walk today, it was getting dark too. We only had one conversation about not being a turd and one session of back up.
Ok Miss Mandi-just for you.
Here is Cane peaking out through this very little crack to see Jake. He does it all the time. I love seeing this 1000 lb animal peak out this itty bitty crack. And here is his butt with now stitches.
Okay I can't get this pics to load and am not in the mood to fight with it anymore as my dial-up is so slow. If you go to my albums and do the Cane being Cane you can see both the pics.

Vick- he does that all the time. It is so cute and something he figured out on his own. We are supposed to have an end to this rain on Sunday and I will have hubby take some pics and spend forever getting a few more on. Plus his wrap comes of Saturday. Whew, we are getting there.

Well here is the update. I do not have pictures because Sunday went so bad and hubby was sick (which he now gave to me). I had watched Cane walk closely Saturday and Sunday and I will admit he is moving better, but still not where I think he should be. I am not giving up hope, but my gut tells me to stay realistic. I know all his bucking and rearing in his stall has not helped either, and I have done everything possible to help him with that.
Well after our handwalk Sunday, which was a lesson on how to lead again I wanted to strip his stall so I rigged up 4 panels and the get from my round pen into a little bigger than a 12x12 outside stall. The vet had said that it might be a good brain break for him. I re-did my regular pasture into a mud area to keep Jake closer and also keep him off the soggy grass. Well Cane played a little, and each time I would yell "QUIT" and he would stop. I made sure he had water and PLENTY of hay. I went and tossed hay down from above and just as I was starting to move it all heck broke loose. I tossed bails out of the way and went out there to grab him as soon as I could and brought him in. I was in tears as I could tell he was visiably sore on his left front again. I called my vet she said bute him and leave him in for at least 24 hours, she also told me to up the tryp. which was done. We did some hand walking Tuesday, but not alot. And today we did a little walking and tried the turn out again, vet said it was ok to. Well guess who bucked up and got his left hind stuck in the round pen. He got it out just as I got to him, he was sore, but ok. I put him in his stall and collapsed on the floor in tears again. I finally looked at him and yelled,"CUT THE SHIT HORSE OR YOU WILL BE DEAD." There is no more trying to fix this, if this doesn't work I have a horse with a damaged deep digitial flexor tendon, who is 5 and acts horrible.
He is not a bad horse and I know that this behavior is from being so cooped up. But something here has got to give. The vet comes next week for the final set of injections (steriods, HA, anti-b's) and we will see what happend from there. So as of right now he will only be hand walked as he can obviously not handle a 12x12 outside area.
Thanks for listening guys. You have been with me on this since day one, Memorial Weekend and now we are approaching Thanksgiving and still not sure of the final outcome. I am trying to be hopeful, but don't want to get my hopes up. Hubby has been great, but he also wants the best for me and not to be stressed or sad.

Oh Tanya, I had no idea that Cane was being such a pain in the butt! I hope that the next vet visit goes well and you see improvement if he stops hurting himself. I wish there was a way to make him understand that he can't run and play even though he wants to from being cooped up. I can't even imagine how stressed you are. We are here for you. Don't give up.

Ack! Poor horse just doesn't understand what's best for him, and you have no way of telling him!
I really hope things settle down, and he'll give himself a chance to heal.
Sending good vibes for Cane's recovery.

Oh dear, what a doodie head. Is there anything else you can give him to keep him calm?
TLC97
11-13-2008, 06:35 AM
Rum- the Reserpine kept giving him yucky poos and was $180 for 10 days and really did not work that well. He was better this a.m. and I will just stick to hand walking for now. Instead of one scoop of Tryp. he is on two in the a.m. and 2 in the p.m. and a 1/2 cup of grain with his stuff, which is nothing for a 1000lb horse.
Thanks for the support guys.
