I sold my barrel saddle to Farmers Wife :) because i want to get into cutting, sorting, etc. So i needed a saddle with a deeper seat. I went to our local tack store and found this.
This is Dez with it on after our ride at El Paso. It fits her so nicely! The only thing is when we were going down steep hills the saddle would slip forward. Any suggestions?

A breast collar might help with it slipping forward.

Breast Collar will help it from slipping back. A Crupper will keep it from slipping forward.

Cute pictures of the horses. Cannot see the saddle picture.
You could try a crupper. That should keep the saddle from sliding forward.

Can we see more pictures of the saddle on Des? Got any angles from the front? I was thinking maybe it's a touch too wide? Adding another pad might help.

Breast collar will not keep it from slipping forward!
Check your cinch - was it still tight?
Cruppers are hard on the tail bones and can send an inexperienced horse bucking and kicking
3 things that have helped me with saddles slipping forward
1) center-fire rigging
2) breeching/britching (must be properly adjusted
3) Charmayne James Ortho Sport pad
If a saddle is slipping forward when going downhill there is usually a saddle fit issue, it is either too narrow and riding on top of the shoulder scapulae and not fitting down behind the shoulder/wither area properly, or it is too wide and sliding over the shoulder.
Even on my mutton-withered Haflingers the saddle slipping issues stopped once I had saddles that fit their conformation.
If you plan to do roping and sorting work in this saddle, you will probably experience the saddle slippage problems again when your horse is doing fast maneuvers with abrupt directional changes.

dez is very mutton withered and a bit over weight at the moment. the cinch was a bit loose that day to, my saddle was slipping to the sides some. me being very bright that morning forgot my cinch so i had to borrow a friend of mines and it was to big, so i couldn't get it tight enough.
dez has had one of the cruppers on before but i don't know if it really pulled much on her. they only did flat trail rides with it. that day was the first time she ever rode with a buck strap and it didn't even phase her.
i will get more pics of the fit tomorrow. its kinda rainy and dreary today.

That answered your problem right there....make the cinch tight before you ride. You should have a cinch on your saddle always, that way you cant forget.

Yeah, it's a new saddle. I can understand forgetting your cinch. :D I did that one time when our 4-H group went on a camp out. I ended up riding bareback the whole time. OUCH! :o Fortunately I can ride bareback at all speeds without falling off, but it still hurt after a couple of hours. :( I never forgot my cinch again after that painful experience.

I need to come see both your horses sometime. :) Did you get anything set up to see those couple of cow horses?
