And one of my favorites. This was the only leaf on that tree. It was the final one and I took the chance to snap a pic of it:

Very beautiful, reminds me of Vermont a little. We love VT but real estate is high, taxes higher. I'm not sure if I could take the cold though, friends there who are native Vermonters are starting to not be able to take the cold. It seems harder the older we get. Cold never bothered me before, I loved it before. Since it it bothering me I've been thinking about North Carolina or Tenn. if we can move [Colorado or out west is my dream but I know that won't happen].

What are real estate prices there and taxes and the biggest ???? Can a person live in or near the mountains without having rattlesnakes as neighbors?

The pictures are beautiful.

Oursarge..........there are ads all the time for mountain cabins with 10 acres for sale near Boone in the low $120,000's. Depending on what you want, you can even get something less expensive than that. Grandfather Mtn is in Boone, as is Appalchian University. It is beautiful up there.

We vacation in Sapphire, which is near Cashiers. Up from Brevard and below Highlands. It is much more expensive in that area, especially Highlands.

I think Rum's Mom answered that, so I'm not going to if that's okay. :)

I can't promise anything on the rattlesnakes. I don't live there. I live about 2 1/2 hrs away. I've heard some are there, but not alot, from what I've heard.

Thanks everyone for the comments! I love going to the mountains. That house is not mine, but it was the only house on that side of the mountain, and I couldn't resist taking a picture. It was gorgeous! That was at a overlook, and we stopped there to snap some pictures. I would've loved to be horseback, but alas, I couldn't. This was a family trip, and on top of that I have no trailer. LOL

I've got some pictures of the fall colors around our place I can show you. Now I do live here. LOL

We visit the mountains every fall, and love going. I saw several real estate signs up, and would love to be able to move to the mountains. My dad's favorite season is fall, and his favorite scenary is Mountains. We saw someone walking up the mountain in a wedding dress and tux, taking Wedding pictures at the location in one of my last 2 pictures (before the leaf). They had a beautiful background for it that's for sure.

Thanks again everyone!

This sounds great, that might be something we will end up looking into since as much as I loved the cold before I can't stand it much now. I also want mountains back in my life, I grew up in the mountains and loved them. We can't move back because of high real estate prices and higher taxes. I grew up in Woodstock NY, just beautiful but we can't afford it. I even thought well maybe we can get a house without alot of land and board the horses. $525. a month per horse isn't something we can do so that's out too.

Pandorasmom thank you too. I always ask about the snakes. New Mexico is another option since that's where my one horse's foster mother moved to help with the conservancy. She's checked into the snake issue for me and said that in that area of NM they aren't common. No matter where I go before I walk anywhere I ask about snakes, can we say PARANOID? I can't even look at a picture. I hate them and if they are poisoness I hate them more. I know areas of PA have poisoness ones but right where we are they aren't common, I don't know why but I'm glad. I'd probably drop dead if I saw one. I can't even handle a regular little snake.

The real estate here is getting out of hand, things aren't selling much right now but a couple yrs ago a shack would go for $600,000 and the place down the road had a bidding war which ended at 1.3 million. Local people can't afford to buy a house here. We are rural so there's not alot available which means prices can be high. We have gas companies interested in the area now so people are hanging onto their land. Everyone is hoping to be the next Jed Clampett! I'm sure we won't since we only have 31 acres and the companies are going after the bigger land owners.

I've thought of North Carolina, it might be an option once my man gets out of the school system. It sure is beautiful and I know you can't get anything here for $120,000 unless it's in a town with no land. Thank you everyone. I love knowing about other places with mountains and hearing about real estate prices and just looking at photos!

There are snakes, and yes there are mountain rattlers. One waterfall in particular we would always visit, we would run into a snake every year, he would be sunbathing on the rocks by the waterfall. He never bothered us and we never bothered him. He was not a rattler but a diamondback water snake.

We have black snakes, copperheads and your various garter snakes. We don't see them much, the cats and dogs keep them away. I am aware that they are out there...........Taz is always right by my side wherever I go in the yard. I am sure he would protect me from any snake.

I love N.C! It's one of my favorite vacation spots. We live in the foothills of the Blueridge mountains. Not nearly as steep, but we like it. Beautiful pics.
