Ok, I KNOW Im 30....but I decided Im going to go back to school. I dont want to spend the next 20 years breaking my body down trimming rank and heavy horses to have nothing to show for it but callouses and backaches. I love trimming, dont get me wrong- but there are some days I would like to just stay CLEAN. Just one day! wading though the mud already this week and dealing with people who want freebie trims for their neglected hooves is really eating at me.
Soooo- I have yet to decide what to do, but I figure I have a whole years worth of generals to take, so I have time to decide. I would love to work with large animals and do the things I love, but they just DO NOT PAY!!
My question is this:
If you could go back to school and get a degree in ANYTHING what would it be? If you could change the degree you have, what would you change it to? If you care happy with what you do, what is it?
My goal is to make good money and like my job. Isnt that everyones LOL??
I have already applied for admission and have to get my tax returns together for financial aid.

Best of luck in your new adventure. I think that is what most people are looking for, a job that they like with the right amount of money... usually never happens! LOL.

You go girl!! I got my degree in Animal Science, Science Option from Texas A & M.I use it everyday but if I could go back and change it I'd get my photography degree. Maybe study photojournalism. That's certainly where my heart and passion have landed. Really the only thing I can do with my degree is go to Vet School or work in a lab. I could also be a Vet Tech if I got certified, but so could everybody. I have all the prereqs to go to Vet school and none of the interest to continue on that course. It was my dream when I was young but when I was faced with the reality of it I had zero interest. I had a hard time with biochemistry. It didn't strike my fancy like it should have. In fact my oldest friend (and the one I roomed with in college) just got her PHD in Microbiology and I'm so stinking proud of her I could stand on my head!!!

Good for you!! If I were 20 years younger... I truly don't know. I did go back when I was just a little younger than you. At that time computers were just really taking hold in a lot of industries so I went back and took courses, accounting, languages, etc. Even though I don't do that now, it got me in the door in this industry. I worked for a temp agency at the same time I went to school.

I hate anything that has to do with math or science LOL- Im just NOT interested in it whatsoever. I totally applaud people who are good at it, since Im so clueless.
I was a military cop for 4 years, and criminal justice interests me, but Im too old to be a cop, and I dont want to spend all day in an office- I would DIE in an office all day. Either that or kill all my coworkers LOL. For my own sanity, I guess I should do something I already LOVE- but they just never pay well.

I still wish I would have gone to vet school... but science, math and chemistry scared me back then. I know the hours would suck and the pay isn't wonderful but I don't have kids and can't think of anything that would make me happier.
My second choice would be to help people... pyschology is very intersting to me.

I would go back to be a vet... I still think about it but I just feel like at 33 it's not the time to be starting from scratch. Plus, it would take forever for me to make the $$ I make now. Sigh.
I think it's great you're doing it, good luck!

Why do you think you are too old to be a cop? You are still young enough to get 20+ years in and retire at the early age of 55. I know plenty of cops that started later in life and plenty that area still working and over 55.

I like those choices.
When I went back to college, before Bob and I married, I went for Office Professional.
I needed some of the class' to get an office job for today, so I figured, why not go for the boss' job...LOL

I've got a BS in wildlife management that I'm not using! You want it?
That will give you a good start towards a masters which can sometimes get you an entry level job with a state DNR.

Im turning 29 on 12/25 when I go back after getting my GED. I would love to study Equine Vet. The thing that scares me is the cost, hours and the time it would take. And with 3 - 4 kids its kinda hard. math was NEVER my subject science was but only when it was hands on. And there isnt anything out there that strikes my interests. I know when I was a little girl I wanted to be a cop Mounted Unit Honestly if it required horses I was for it. Just now I don't know...
But good luck to everyone wanting there dreams to come true and going to get them.
One day I will get my head out of the dirt and see the light.

You could go into probation and parole if you don't want to be a cop. If I went back I would get my Phd in psychology and get the big bucks! lol!

Sounds familiar- I started my undergraduate program when I was 30. I'm 43 now and will finish my master's in March.
I will graduate as a Counselor with specialties in Equine Assisted Psychotherapy and Trauma, Abuse and Deprivation.
My mom recently asked, "You've gone to school 7 years so you can play with kids, horses, and dogs?" And I proudly replied YES!!!
I say go for it and do whatever you want. Don't underestimate yourself- anyone who has the chutzpah to go back to school as an adult can accomplish anything they want. Go for the doctorate degree- if I had it to do over, I would skip the Masters and get the doctorate. JMHO.
How exciting for you-please let us know what you decide.

hmmm... how about business degree with animal science/equine minor! Then you go into sales for some sort of equine/animal product sales!
My cousin just got a job with Abbott in their sales department. So he spends all day traveling around meeting with his vets and keeping them supplied with the stuff they need, and showing them the new products that are on the market!
Even though it's not alot of hands on animal work, you still spend you day talking about animals with other animal people and you're clean!
I still always recomend the job of vet tech... I love it! I do have a bachelors in Agricultural Business and Economics... but the bussiness world just wasn't for me! I'd love to do the sales thing, but I'm not willing to move and there's no jobs like that where I am!

my mom is 44 with 2 kids living at home and she just started school to get her vet tech degree. i am so proud of her. and i just signed up to do vet tech on-line through Penn Foster college. but i am 23. but i would say that if there is something that interests you see if you can get a degree in it. dont let your age stop you!! my mom thought she was to old to start over but after getting laid off because of the economy taking a dump she figured it would not hurt to try. plus she gets to cheat, she has me to call with any kind of questions and my brothers math and science books to use. lol

I registered online for community college- Im going back in January. I have to get the last 3 years taxes from the IRS (costs money- you would think they already took enough LOL) and apply for my financial aid. I still havent decided what the heck to do, but Im going to start with my generals for the first few terms before I worry too much about what to do.

If (when) I make it back to school I want to get a masters in dairy science. I already have a bs in ag science but I want that extra info to help the cows. Unfortunately it's not something offered at every college :-/ And I've only been out for 3 yrs and not ready to go back to studying just yet!!
I'd get something in business just because you can use a business degree with anything you do. I know a guy who wanted to be an artist so he got a marketing degree and now is able to sell his art and is doing pretty well as an artist instead of a starving artist. Generally getting a business degree also gives you a good overview of all the business world even if you aren't going into that area. Everyone needs sales or management people and accountant or finance people. Plus it pays the best. Generally business majors graduate and start making 35-50k a year while the average salary of a different degree coming out of college is 5-10k lower.
So, that is my recommendation if you want to make money. Actually, if you want to make money and have lifestyle I would suggest becoming a business professor. It is about a 20-25 hour work week and you can get paid over 100k a year. The only problem is you have to get through a grad program, and talk in front of people.
Right now I am getting an accounting degree. However, someday when I am rich I will probably come back to school and get a degree in equine studies because that stuff sounds interesting.

Trimming is a thankless job...but the horses appreciate it
I would probably try the equine science - horse training option. Seems I really get bent out of shape now when I see less talented riders/wanttabe trainers doing things I would love to do but don't have the cash for.
Too many vet technicians here. I wish it was possible to go to vet school part time
Graphic Design, website design, publishing... I'd start my own magazine. My original major was Therapeutic Recreation - working with special populations and I have not used that forever. A little bit of volunteering right out of college and that was it.
