this trailer has been for sale for about 2 years now, or at least it has been for sale for as long as we have lived here(2 years) so it might have been for sale longer. they have not pasted it anywhere they just had a for sale sign with no information on it with it sitting in a trucking companies storage lot. its right on a road but unless you know the who owns the lot you are out of luck, there is no signs posted anywhere with the companies name on it and the main building for the company is a block away. these are most likely most of the reasons it is still for sale. but also because the owner is asking $1700 for a 2 horse Miley straight load trailer. i am not sure the year because there is not tag on the trailer and the owner could not remember when i asked him. it is in mostly great shape, i have not looked at the floor but he just used it to haul a large mule so it is sound. the lights all work as well as breaks. there is some rust where the paint is bubbling at the edges of the doors. when we first looked at it a while ago there was a divider but yesterday it was gone so i have to ask about it. here are some pictures i took of it yesterday with my phone so sorry about the quality. i am just wondering if $1700 is an okay price or too much.

Whats the inside look like...can you get pics?
Have you checked underneath for rust?
Does it have mats? If so did you check under the mats and inspect the floor?

FYI, some people will haul an animal in trailer that is NOT sound, so dont let that mule haul comment make you think it is ok. Do your own inspection, also, is there a trailer place around, they can look it over for you.

For an older two-horse, it looks tall. That's a good thing, some of them are so short a big horse really has to cower in them.

I would check the floor, definitely... and if it's been sitting at least 2 years, the tires all need to be replaced just from weather and age, and it needs the bearings repacked. That's $700 off right there. If the floor is good and it's otherwise not rusted out, it should be worth a thousand.

If the floor is in good condition as well as the inside I guess the price is okay. It is really odd that it has just been sitting there...that could cause problems to the trailer and tires as well. Are they just not really wanting to sell or something?

If you do buy it, I wouldn't use it until I took it to a mechanic and had a good "going over".

My little trailer, the Kingston is a 1999 and I have the bearings repacked each year, have it gone over carefully yet right now it's in Pa getting a total refurbishing. It's rusted on the bottom, the plywood in the ramp is weak and the spring broke that pulls the ramp up. There is a lot that can happen and you don't want your horse to be at risk.

That being said, it looks like a nice trailer:cowboy:

we sold a trailer similar to that but not in as good of condition, but i think that 1700 is over priced. We sold ours for 900.

IMO due to the economy people don't want to pay what things are worth now. People got used to buying horses, trailers, houses for far less than they used to be worth. I just looked up a few other miley two horse straight loads. They were quite old but in good condition selling for average $1500. So if the trailer is in fact is good condition it is probably worth it.

Miley's are tiny, which has an impact on their sale value. The size means it won't be as versatile as a taller, longer model.
I'm guessing that this one is probably late 60's or early 70's, so that makes it an $800 or $900 dollar item, if it's in perfect shape.
Most trailers have a manufacturer's tag on the front somewhere, or on the tongue. You may find it's year of manufacture there.

We are in town now so on our way home we will stop by and get some more pictures of it. It is a bigger trailer. In the picture looking straight at the back you can't see my truck in front or it and I have a wide old dodge truck.

here are some pictures of the inside. i am not sure where the divider is, but it is missing the front pad on the left side. the wood floor is good and the mats are nice and thick. it is an extra tall trailer so that is a plus. the last person to paint the trailer painted over the manufactures sticker so the owner has to find the paperwork on it to know the exact year and model. the only big worry is the bottom of the doors where they have rusted thought to the wood from the crap that was left in it.

Around here they go for about $1000 - $1100.
I just got mine for $850. Mine is not rusted badly, but has rust on the inside, needs to be sand blasted and painted. Other than that the condition is a lot like what you have described. I wouldn't pay $1700 for it.

Id have a tape measure when you go out.
The doors are open. My opinion why you cant see the truck.

Awww, not trying to be argumentative, but its not a straight on pic for that comment.
I like them wide, and I like my slant loads.
I guess Im not one to give advice on this trailer.

no problem, i would prefer a slant load but finding one in my area that does not cost an arm and leg has not been working out. right now this is the biggest trailer we have found locally. everything else has been smaller! but if if does turn out to be too narrow the owner would have no problem letting us bring it back for a full return.

Thats good to know that if it dosnt work out you can take it back.
Id deff get that in writing, you know how some people are.
Id also have it in writing that you can take it back if it dosnt pass a trailer persons inspection.
Good luck with your decision!

i would say 1700 is alittle high, it will need some tlc and really check out the underside, any brake system, and do they have the divider?

i have not talked to the owner again, i have been running around crazy from work. but Monday we are going to go talk to him. we will offer him $1000 because of all the rust we see and i am not sure what the underside of the floor is going to look like after seeing the door but we will see. the trailer does have breaks and the wheel bearing are not a big deal because my hubby can do them, really everything the trailer need we can fix i just dont what to spend that much and then have to spend more in parts to fix it. but we will see. the guy that owns it really does not care about it, he bought it think of renting it out but never followed through so it has sat in his company's storage yard.

Well, I used to have a trailer almost exactly like that, just a different color. It was in good shape, just way too small for my horses' taste. They wanted nothing to do with it (they both load with little to no trouble in a two horse slant load). I started out asking $1500 because my mom told me to but I ended up selling it for $1,100.

Someone I know recently sold a blue one in about the same condition for 700 dollars. And that's about what any 2-horse straight load that size goes for around here. Between 500-900

I would pass after seeing those new pics. I understand it can be hard to find a slant that is affordable, but that looks tiny! We had a little trailer like that and it caused so many problems. My horses got hurt several times and were so scared of how small it was. They load awesome on the slant. I don't think it is worth $1700 after seeing the inside.

I had the same style trailer but I don't think mine was extra tall. Muffin would fit in it when he was a 3 year old and he's much wider then a QH. He would literally exhale to fit through the opening between the middle bar and the sides to load. But, he has no problem with trailer loading so he just stuffed himself in there anyway that he could fit because he loves the trailer...There's food in there! lol It felt like I was trying to stuff an elephant in a tin can.

After the last trip to the Vets for a check up and then to drop him off at the trainers last year I sold the trailer for $1,000. Guys were laughing when we showed up at the stables with the biggest horse stuffed in the smallest trailer. They were amazed when Muffin backed out that he even fit in there, let alone willingly loaded. lol But, It was not safe to have such a big horse in such a little trailer even though Muffin was good about loading he had out grown it and it was time to upgrade. It had BRAND new treated and sealed wood floor boards too but needed some TLC on the mangers from rust, possible new tires and showed it's age but was in working condition and didn't look bad. It was a 70's model Miley.

I use a tail bag now because he backed out and stepped on his tail while we were practicing loading.

I decided to slant the divider to give him more room to balance himself but not enough to give him the idea he might be able to turn around.

So, If Muffin can fit in one of these trailers I'm sure most normal sized horses can with the right training and incentive. Yeah, it's small but they can fit. They might not prefer it but they can fit if you can get them to load.

I now have a 2 horse slant load and Muffin wasn't sure about it at first, he was so used to the straight load and loading himself into the slot that the big open slant load had him confused at first but he figured it out pretty quickly.....there was a feeder in the slant load too! lol

Edit to add: Muffin was 2 in these pictures, a little more then 1,300 pounds and around 15-15.2 hands.
