I'm getting eaten alive. So I know my animals are too. They are really horrible. I searched for an old thread I remember about a garlic spray or something that works really well but had no luck. Does anyone remember what it was or who posted it.
Anyone have any other tips on how to fight off those nasty bugers. (Prado's getting vaccined tonight and the dogs on heart worm prev)

I'm here for you;)
Can't offer much advice as those buggers are relentless. But do walk your entire property looking for any standing water. Even the lip of an overturned bucket, a piece of plastic, bottle cap, tires.....anything that that you may never even notice unless you're looking. They don't need much to lay their eggs.
Sure, they will still fly over to your place but at least they won't be hatching there.
You could even get automatic misters than puff out insect repellent .
Setting up fans in shelters or his stall will keep them away from too. Otherwise spray, masks, turnout sheets.
The horses here have to come in before the bugs come out or they run like crazy.
We haven't any bugs yet, not even flies, too darn cold.

thanks for being here for me natisha ;)
yea I'm thinking about gold fish in the water trough because that's the only standing water and i think they are prob laying their eggs there. YUCK! I just don't know how they'll (the gold fish" will do in the sun in a black water trough...I'd hate to cook them in there.

They like stagnant water best. Plus your pony will like the cool fresh water.
You can see if they layed eggs even overnight. The surface of the water will have a see through thin layer that is hard to notice (& explain). If my tank is too full to dump I skim the layer off with a small bucket. You'll miss some but get most.

How big is your trough? We have several 40 and 100 gallon troughs that we do what Natisha does- just dump every couple days but have friends that have the huge round ones that look like a swimming pool. They use "Mosquito Dunks" in them year round. Pyranha fly spray and Absorbine Ultrashield are two fly sprays that seem to be effective against mosquitos and flys here in Texas.

I have a 100 gallon tank that I dont fill all the way this time of yr.
I use granules for the tank that are safe for stock. I buy them at Walmart.
Just a tiny sprinkle works.

They are selling Mosquito Halt at the tack stores, see if your store carries it. Heard good things about it, but only for mosquitoes.

I tried mosquito halt the year before last (worked at the store and got it for $6 a bottle!). It worked great for mosquitos and flies. Smells terrible though. And now that I don't work at a store I don't want to shell out nearly $20 for it.

Well, you can use a repellent with DEET for yourself, of course. I always keep a can of OFF! handy in the summer. Buster is vaccinated for everything, but I don't really know what else to do for him in the summer. It's a huge farm. We don't have standing water, but the mosquitos just have to make a short trip out of the woods when it cools off at night. The bats help a lot, I'm sure. We have bats flying around like crazy at night.

Forgot to add. If Im not dumping Mysts water bucket, she is, so it stays pretty clean. I cant use gold fish, tried them, Myst thought they were play toys for her, so yup, the tank was dumped getting to them. Poor fishes.
I buy by the gallon now. I pay almost 20 bucks when I buy the quart and am tired of it, so when I buy a gallon, its like almost getting a quart free. Im all for that.
