And it wasn't Solon but he saw it and was fussing and pacing.
Our barn owner is out of town and a bunch of us are covering all the barn chores. During the winter the horses don't get outdoor turnout (don't ask) but they get arena turnout for about an hour while their stalls get done. The geldings get put out together and the mares get put out then the horses that can't be put out with other horses get their time.
Sadly our barn owner has gotten these horses in the very bad habit of letting them loose before they get to the gate and the horse just blows through the gate, instead of leading them quietly through the gate then removing their leadropes.
I was standing against the wall ready to the close the gate when the other lady let the horse go and he blew through the gate bucking/kicking and nailed my on the left forearm and hip. Wow, what an impact.
I do medieval swordfiting and have been hit by big ol huge men with rattan swords but never felt anything like this. Solon was the first horse in and saw it all, I could hear him in the arena snorting. I was doubled over and the poor lady was mortified by what happened.
I ketp telling her it wasn't her fault, it was bad place bad time and it's something that can happen. Because it wasn't her fault. If anything it was the barn owner's fault for setting poor habits for the horses going into the arena and for not letting the horses out for about 2 days (horese need turnout especialy when they have to be in their stalls).
At any rate, I've got a black bruise on the point of my hip. Never had one that color before. My forarm was a scrape the shape of the hoof and a werid indention and some bruising. It's not broke. I can move my fingers and move my wrist a little. Swollen and hurts hell.
I had a chance to talk to the BO last night and she didn't really have anything to say other than he did?? Oblivious I swear.
Ah well. I'm icing and resting. I have to feed tonight but I'm sure it will go fine. Just wanted to share my misery.

OOUUCCHH! Poor Chev - thank goodness it wasn't worse... scary to think of the accidents that could happen with horses that have been allowed to behave that way.:( I sure hope the ice helps and that you're feeling better soon - Ibuprofen is your friend at a time like this.;)

ohh, not fun.. Good to here your not sirusly hurt. Sounds like the BO and the lady that let the horse go need a good talking too. That's a really dangerus habbit to get those horses in to and you just proved it.
You might end up with a dent in your arm permanently. I have a dent in the front of the thigh where a kick crushed the muscle and it hasnt filled back in for the past year. Take is easy for a while, sorry to hear about your accedent.

I am glad it wasn't Solon! Sorry that you got hurt though. Doesn't sound like that good of set up for the horses or for those that are letting them out in the arena.
Hope you heal up soon!

ouch...i can not imagine what kind of pain youre in. Feel better soon!
Ouch !! I was skimmed once by a mare kicking at a fly, and once my daughters mare dumped me and stomped my right ankle as she ran away and that left a u shaped bruise and dent. That was 3 years ago and the dent is still there.

Cheval, you really need to get that arm x-rayed. Just because you can move it doesn't mean it's not broke. I'm living proof of that. My horse fell on my lower left leg and it hurt like heck, but I figured if I could walk on it it must just be a bad sprain. So I walked around on it for two days, but the swelling got pretty bad so I finally went to have it checked, and yep, you guessed it, the ankle was broken. So much for my theory! They told me I was very lucky it didn't shift during that time or it would've required surgery, with plates and pins and all that fun stuff. As it was I had to wear a cast for 6wks. So GO TO THE DOCTOR! :)

Soooo Sorry. I know how it feels, too. I have a dent in my thigh 1 1/2 yrs old. My Faith saw me brushing another horse and was jealous. She positioned herself to kick him and he left (because he was smarter than me) and I just thought she was coming over to be petter. Next thing I saw was the bottom of her foot coming at me, a bolt of lightening behind my eyes, and then I was sitting on the ground. I looked down where the searing knife felt like it was and I had a 1 inch hole in my leg with yellow serum and little white chunks running out of it. I was screaming and afraid they were gonna step on me and I couldn't get up. My hubby heard me and ran to the barn and got the Ranger and came and got me. It takes a while to get over, but I really should have been paying attention.
Hope yours heals and doesn't keep the knot. X rays wouldn't hurt! Especially if it's around the elbow. My dog still has his cast!

Ow! Hope you heal up fast!
I don't really understand why they can't have outside turnout... but still the horses should be taught to walk calmly through the gate, wait for the leadrope to come off, and then walk away before kicking up their heels. Maybe this could be a wake up call for your B.O. and she'll realize that? or maybe not...
Hope you feel better soon. I've only ever been kicked once and there wasn't much behind the kick, she more just thrust out so I'd let go of her leg. Unfortunately I caught her hoof right in the cheek, which wouldn't have been so bad except I have braces. So the inside of my mouth got cut in a couple places and I ended up with a couple sores. Could have been a lot worse, but it still hurt, and it wasn't even that bad! I can't imagine how much yours is hurting!

I bet the reason for no outside turnout is mud. Around here in winter if people don't have ground that drains as well as mine does, deep sink mud can be a real problem unless she installed some good drainage and footing.
On the letting the horses run to the arena.... She probably won't change... it works for her. When you're moving a bunch of horses, you don't take the time to walk them out, stop, wait, let go, be calm, they just want to let 'em go and get out of the way.
The appy farm I worked at, they just opened gates and the horses ran out in the morning on their own, and ran back into their stalls in the evening. Efficient... 99 out of a hundred times... if a horse gets a wild hair to cause trouble, mayhem ensues :D

ohh ouch. I think that the accidental kicks that you are in the wrong place at the wrong time are often worse than the intentional ones. hope you are on your way to a speedy recovery

Yowsie Pete!
I'm glad you're OK; it could have been a whole lot worse. The BO needs to know that they can reach a human head or the chest with a kick, and it's a killer. Does she really want that kind of accident on her conscience?
Hope you get to feeling better...

Dang! I just found this thread again. I'm glad you went and had it seen about and that it's just a crack! It LOOKS painful, so I'll bet it FEELS worse than that. Hang in there and take care of yourself. Try to not use it very much. I know that's going to be hard though. I had a fit with my cast. But at least you can take a brace off to get in the shower. I had to stick my cast in a garbage bag to get in the shower and then hold my arm straight up to keep the water from running down in it. And talk about ITCH, my gosh! I know it's bad, but it could be worse. :)

Been there! I was kicked by my neighbors horse when I was nice enough to herd the nutcase back to its house at 9 at night when it was in the road! GRRRRR. A friends horse with a fear of plastic bags nailed me on my thigh one time when I had a bag and was walking by it. I've never been kicked by my own, always some else's!
I have gotten boarders in from barns that let them run out like that. I let the boarders know right away that any horse going to or from the barn must be on their best behavior and I will not tolerate a rude horse. It never takes long for the horse owner to start thanking me when they notice the difference in their horse. Hope you feel better.

Wow glad to hear that you weren't seriously hurt!
That's why when I had Lady I always insisted on walking into the pasture and turning her around so she faced the fence before I let her go with a few exceptions when the gate was six inch deep mud or when there were other horses around that looked like they might kick or bite her. Even though the other stablehands just opened the gate and let the horse go I always insisted on doing this. And if I ever have horses again I'll do the same thing.
