The vet is coming out tomorrow.. its time for my boy to be gelded. If you remember my post about it I finally decided to do it and get it over with.
So I just want a little reassurance here that it will be fine and recovery wont be too bad and.. I have never had one done so what are the basics of afterward care? How long is recovery? Ah.. poor boy :(

I bought my horse already gelded so I can't help you out with my experience but best of luck to you and your baby. I am sure he will be fine.

Talk to the vet about the specifics of aftercare and good luck! I've seen it look swollen and sore, and in my experience, cold hosing is good and some movement is good, but vets may differ in what they'd recommend for your particular setting.

Proddy was gelded without any complications.. Just take note/don't be alarmed that he will be very tired after the operation. Prodigy laid down a lot, and acted pretty drowsy for a couple days afterwards..

When I had Tucker gelded we came home and I turned him out with Pearl and Jorie. I didn't have any swelling at all. I did check on him throughout the days to make sure everything was going good. The movement of just grazing kept the build-up of fluids down. I have seen people put them on stall rest and of course swelling occurred and took a longer time healing. But talk to the vet and he/she will let you know what to do in your conditions. I don't know if you have turn out and czar's activity level.

I wondered about that.. He has a stall in the barn which he stays in during the day and then goes out when I get home from work around 6pm until I am ready to go to bed around 10pm. I dont know though, he runs and plays so hard when he first goes out I worry about turning him loose I dont know what kind of damage he could do running and bucking. Of course I know he may not feel like it the first couple days but after that I dont know.
I guess I will just have to see what my vet says.

He won't do any damage. There are no stitches. My Harley was running and bucking and he healed just fine. He was turned out; I didn't stall him at all. He never got any swelling. My vet told me to make sure he has some movement. I asked him about the after care and he told me to keep an eye on it but leave it alone. So I did and it healed just fine. I think it took few weeks to heal up completely.
The worst part was waking up. Harley was going insane. Vet did it in the round pen and Harley got few scrapes on his face from running in to the fence few times. Also when he was going to sleep he freaked out lost balance and run straight in to me, knocking me of my feet. Luckily he is so small I only got couple of bruises. It's better not to stand too close to the horse just in case.

I agree. I had Caddo done back in Feb. One thing that you are going to want to watch for is flies. Being summer they may try to get into that area. Ask your vet and see what you need to do for the flies. Caddo didn't have any trouble. I did have to stall him for a few days and he swelled some but it wasn't do to the operation he has a bad cut on his leg before the surgery. Petra is right though let him be unless the vet tells you otherwise. It will heal. When they put him to sleep you might get a little worried because they get drowsy will quick. So stay out of the way and let the vet tell you what you need to do. I helped my vet. You are in my prayers. He will be fine.

Thanks everyone! I am hoping everything will be fine. My vet assured me he has done hundreds of times and never had any major issues at all so.. I am trusting. I appreciate the advice. I will let everyone know when its over and he is good.

im sure he will do fine. The aftercare depends on the vet mostly. The baby done at my old barn was usually stalled except for turnout a few days a week so we kept him stalled and did handwalking for a while during the day a couple times and hosing. He healed fine. just ask your vet as many questions as you can, dont feel embarrased.

Aftercare varies greatly depending on the horse. Of course there is a basic guideline. I've seen horses who are up and at em' after a few hours. Some who it takes a day or so.
it will be ok. I'm assuming it's a normal geld. Nothing out of the ordinary. He will be fine :)

Its over.. he is a gelding. Not a very happy one though. He is ok. Just not himself. He is pawing the ground a little and acting like he doesn't feel well. He also crosses his back legs every now and then. It actually went really well though, not as traumatic as I thought it might be for either of us lol now I am just hoping for a speedy recovery.
I don't think he's acting! Wow, that has got to ache.
Good for you both, though, life just got much simpler.
