So I put those darn moth balls under the house, and now Im paying for it.
Been getting dizzy spells and slight nausea.
I opened up the siding on the house and have help coming tomorrow to rid of them.
Windows open in the house now while I air it out too. Ya cant smell them to bad in the house, but Im sure the gas' are getting in from underneath.
DONT USE MOTH BALLS, THEY ARE DANGEROUS.

Oh no. I remember you hoping they would be okay since it's not closed off entirely under your house. I'm glad you are getting rid of them though. Hopefully you'll feel better soon!
Thanks for the warning. You should try some of those "hedge balls".

Good LORD! That's scary!! I've used them before in flower beds to keep the cats out, but not under the house. Like you, I would have never EVEN thought about the fumes rising up into the house. Dang!

I went across the street and talked to the rescue/fire department guy. He came over, said he could smell the moth balls, but not propane. Was going to plug in one of those detectors, but I had one already, it is at 0. Gave me a mask, as I have 2 guys coming by tomorrow to help me get those darned things out.
Then I need to get some moth ball smelly gone stuff, and put under the house.
Funny thing, the rescue guy and I were talking. When he was in the military, they packed everything in moth balls. Some people get sick from them, some dont. I guess Im one that they make sick.

The rescue guy just came over, gave me some info. Said that he called a few medics and other people. Said that other than feeling the nausea, I should be fine, that they have never had to take anyone to the hospital. He told me, other than being mad at myself, I should be fine...LOL. So, Im not going to stress over it. I got the underneath airing out well, and they will be gone, well most of them, tomorrow. WOhoooo, good news. I was scared there for a min.

Hey! I believe *I* tried my darndest to get through to ya.
A little tidbit on mothballs:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mothball
[... edited out rambling... lol]
Mothballs are highly toxic when ingested, causing serious illness or death. In addition to this, overdoing it by using a large quantity of mothballs in a basement or a living space may cause serous respiratory problems in people living in the space. The danger of this happening when using them in this manner becomes very high...
I kid, I kid. ;)
Seriously though, I'm glad you'll have help getting them out! The smell alone makes me feel all- chemicaly- lol.

Oh I got that Carla.
Who'd of thought that under a mobile home, not cemented skirting, that they would cause so much of an issue.
Gesh, I guess ugly skirting works better than I thought it did.
As far as ingesting them. I was not going to have them on my dinner plate,,,lol, although they could pass for baby onions...ewwww, I dont like those either.

Funny gal.. baby onions, lol! Don't worry, I wasn't too worried about you ingesting them at that particular juncture. That may be a thread for another day. :p
Honestly, when you reminded me that it was skirting, I figured that might be ventilated enough, too. Well, live and learn!
I still wonder why my in-laws haven't suffered any ill effects from them, as strong as the smell is in their house :yuck:

My mother in law reeks of moth balls. She keeps them in her car's glove box to keep the mice out. I hate when she visits because my whole house smells like moth balls for a few days after she leaves. She made us cookies last year and they tasted like moth balls! Just thinking about them turns my stomach. I do believe they are carcinogens though...use cedar instead!

Hope you'll be feeling better. I can't stand the smell of them, I'm allergic.
I remember my grandmother always had everything packed in moth balls, the whole house always smelled like them. My husband's aunt used to throw them in her flower garden to keep the deer out. It never worked but when I'd go by to get the mail I'd always smell them then feel sick.
Feel better. I'm surprised they still sell them knowing how dangerous they are.

So Vick, I'm trying to catch up here, did you ever get the mothballs out from under your house?
vicklynn
11-10-2008, 11:19 AM
Ummmm, nope, not yet. They guys that were coming, they both had to work, one at home, the other didnt get off his paying job until dark. Bob will be home this week and he will take care of it. Its not coming up in the house anymore since Ive taken some of the skirting off. Blows right through, and the smell outside is way better too.
Thanks for checking though.

You mil has mice in her glove box? That is kind of strange, isn't it?
Sorry I missed your initial post Vick, I would have warned you. I've posted info about them before. Very dangerous. We have people come in all the time that smell like moth balls, it must kill their sense of smell and they must not know it or something. I have had someone give me a bag of candy that tasted like mothballs.
