In July 2010!!

OK, here's the deal...

I've told about, hmm, 3 of you that I applied to do a "World Challenge" thing:
http://www.world-challenge.co.uk/
AND I GOT IN :D:D:D:D

So, for those of you who're lazy(lol)/opposed against linkage, World Challenge is a teacher and an expedition leader gathering a group of 20 kids and going to a foreign country (usually 3rd world) to go on an expiditon. The catches are:
- All money for travel fees (£3125) must be fundraised (over 2 years, hence trip in 2010)
- We must organise EVERYTHING - fundraising, travel once we get there, expeditions, food, chores, accomodation) - ourselves
- It's not your typical holiday. We must go on 2/3 expeditions - climbing mountains, going for a walk; we camp out or stay in basic accomodation, no hotels etc; and we have to do at least 1 week of community work, where we'll contribute to the community in some way, most likely building or teaching :D

AND I GOT PICKED out of about 15 applicants in my year I made the top 5!!
They took 5 from each year group.

I AM SO CHUFFED I actually cried :) *sniffle*
Two of my best friends also got picked - you get picked based on an application letter, which involved you talking about what you'd get from the trip, what you could bring, why you wanted to go; also from the organiser talking to our Head of Year - I knew I haven't been volunteering for 2 1/2 years straight for nothing!!

Huh. So that's my big news! I think I remembered everything.

The only downer is ONE of my ex-best-mates has been harping on at me for ages, because he thinks I do too much (I dance, horseride, volunteer, play the cello, am in orchestra, two choirs, so I also have various commitments that come with these, oh and I now also have my job) and he thinks that my grades will be affected because of me taking on this and the amount of money I have to raise.
I am more than a little p:$$3d off by this lack of support, tbh. I have been nothing but supportive for him in anything he's tried to do. When he heard today that I'd actually got in - yes, he's been like this since I got my job back in September, so you can imagine what effect "You're going to fail" in my ears for two months has had on me - he immediately said to a friend (who confided in me later) I was going to "crash and burn".
:( I suppose you get your ups and downs with everything. If I have to lose him as a mate, it's no huge loss.

BUT YAY UGANDA :D if you guys have any questions fire away!! And I'll keep y'all posted on whatever happens next ^__^

Well, we have all sorts of ideas...bag-packing, dog walking, car washing, sponsored abseil off the Transporter Bridge in Middlesborough, all sorts.

It's worth 70 UCAS points :3
But also a heap of life skills!!! So hopefully it'll give me a leg up into Edinburgh ;)

How exciting!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!! I'm very excited for you and I think you will be just fine with grades and fundraising - you just have to prioritize and organize and you will do wonderfully!

AWSOME! the closest we have to that is certain people get selected every two years to visit our "sister schools" in Germany and russia, you go there during the summer and live wiht one of the students and their family. and you get a huge project to do with it. this years topic was the cold war. I'm really excited for you =p bet you'll have tons of fun!:D

That's fantastic! You made it! Congratulations! That is going to be so neat for you!

Don't let anyone get you down about taking on too much- you don't want to pass this up, after you've been waiting on pins and needles to get in! I'm so happy for you.

Woo! Hoo! Congratulations, Katy.

What's all this bit about fundraising? I should think that one weekend of busking should cover the costs for the entire group of 15 with all of the talent that you possess!

We'll look forward to hearing the preparations for the next year or so and then about the trip itself.

Thanks for all the nice comments guys :D I knew I could count on you!!

Haha, JackieB, I do wish!! All my friends seem convinced that busking will do the job. Dad thinks a car wash in the local supermarket car park would also raise alot, and bag packing...best get started :p

Ponies, that sounds like fun!! I've been to Germany - Cologne and the geenral northwesty-ness of Cologne - but I've never been to Russia...I'd LOVE to though :)

rocknK, lol...yeah, I lost a £3150 bet ;) mm, really looking forwards to all them big needles!!

Arrow, yeah...it seems a long way off now...but I'm sure it'll come round quicker than I notice! I've got 4 sets of exams to get through first 8D

I will keep all of you posted!! I'm still registering that I got in...this is so incredible!!!!
