While I was gone to Vegas the "boys" obviously had a few disagreements.

When I got back the BO said she was going out of town for a few days and I agreed to take care of the horses while she is gone. I went out to the barn the night we got back and Dallas did not have his fly mask on. I couldn't find it anywhere around the barn area.

As I walked up to Dallas's stall... (he ALWAYS greats me) he came up and I went to pet him and he shyed away. Everytime I tried to pet his face he jumped back like I was going to hit him.

I finally went into his stall to check out why he was acting so weird. His fly boots were all torn up and tight on his legs, so I pulled those off, then as I started inspecting his face I found several scrapes and pretty good LONG cut under his neck. So I knew these were caused by his fly mask getting ripped off. BUT... I have a hot wire between Joe and Dallas. As I looked in the walkway I saw that the Hot wire had been unplugged. So I plugged it back in and Missy jumped out of her skin.

I walked the fence line and found that the hot wire was broken and shorting out on the regular fence...buzzing like crazy, so I unplugged it. Then I found Dallas's face mask in Joe's turnout.

I fixed the fence... it was broken on Joe's side.... so whatever happened it was pretty intense, because the wire was a mangled mess.

Now... what really upsets me, is the BO did not call me to tell me anything happened and judging from the cuts and scrapes on Dallas, this happened shortly after I left for Vegas. She didn't go into the turnouts to get the flymask and did not attempt to fix the fence. All she had to do was tie it together. Plus his fly boots were tight on his legs from being caught up on something or him chewing on them.

I am just mad because I wasn't called to be notified that the boys were not playing nice while I was gone, and the fact that Dallas is scuffed up. The other gal, used to look for things out of place and if one of the horses got hurt, she would put something on it or at least call and ask.

Dallas will be fine, the scrapes and cuts are not too deep, but I am just pissed that nobody called me.

Sorry to hear that. I'd be mad too. She is the BO, she is responsible for stuff like this, no matter if you are gone or not.

I'm so glad I don't board anymore. That's the BO's job...to fix broken fences and make sure the horses are safe and of course to notify you if something happens. They are always so happy to take your money but not deliver the goods. I'm sorry.

So sorry CG. Glad that Dallas isn't any worse than that. People are right though that is the BO responsibility. I loved the place I boarded they told me if my horses were hurt. The very first time it happened they didn't so when I went out and saw my horses I saw that Cinnamon was limping. She had some how gotten a piece of wire in her hoof and they didn't notify me. So I told them that if I am paying for my horses to be boarded here then they need to do a better job with notifying me that something wrong. Needless to say we didn't have that problem after that. I would talk to her and tell her that if it happens again then you are moving barns.

As a barn owner & former long time boarder I understand your frustration.
If a BO called me when I was out of town to tell me my horse was bad what could I do about it anyway? I used to get calls like that, 'your horse knocked someone over bolting through a stall door, blah, blah'. Not much I could do.
She should have addressed the fence & the injuries though. Is there a chance she was only out when it was dark so maybe didn't see the injuries? She should have surely seen the mask was off & investigated further. It seems she just tossed feed & didn't look the horses over but who knows for sure.
Is there any way the horses can be moved so they aren't next to each other?

I wouldn't assume she knew about any of this. I doubt she would have left loose wire in the pens. Give her some benefit of the doubt.

She goes out there in the mornings and at night. She is supposed to take the fly masks off at night and put them back on in the mornings. If she had paid attention, she would have noticed that Dallas's mask was in Joe's turnout.

I know I couldn't do anything about the fence, but if she had called me, I could have told her what to put on his cuts.

Well, she did unplug the electric fence, because it was broke, but she just left the broken wire without tying it off, or........calling me to ask what she should do.

I totally understand your frustration! If she was on top of everything she wouldn't have left the broken wire in the turn out and would have Dallas fly mask up off the ground and back on his head.

Assuming it is summer, there is more daylight than darkness, Im also assuming that beings she unplugged the hot wire, which makes me assume she knew something was up, which if all that assumption is correct, then she should of done some thing about it.
Honestly, if it were me, Id of unplugged the hotwire, fixed it, gotten Dallas' face mask put on, put some medicine on him, and only called you to tell you what happened and everything is AOK. Of course, Id of checked his boots too. Left on, they need daily checking.

Exactly Vick.....

But at the moment I can't get the fly mask back on Dallas. He has more cuts than I originally thought and he wants nothing to do with the fly mask right now. I did get him some new fly boots and got those on him, the flys really chew up his legs. They are always blood spotted if I don't put the fly boots on, and since we board at a dairy you can just imagine how many flys we have out here with this heat.

I worked with Dallas today on some ground work and a few new things.... from the CA tour. I am hoping that tomorrow will bring better results with getting the fly maks back on.

I'd be p'o'd too. Coming back to find a beat up horse with unsafe conditions that could have been fixed easily isn't what I'm paying for. I don't know what boarding situation you have, but if it's full board I would be pitching a fit when she got back, wondering why she didn't think it was necessary to inform you of.

Even if I'm out of town, a quick "oh, you're horses had xyz happen and I did abc" would at least keep me updated. It's like when you leave a kid with a babysitter and something happens- you'd want to know.

Good luck with the fly mask today
