both hubby and i had Saturday off for once and while we where in town found out there was going to be a rodeo as well as our towns yearly gold rush festival. got to the festival late but found a few great buys. hubby got something he has been wanting for awhile. he got a 5 foot claymore in great condition for only $30!! we caught them right as they where packing up. and i found a purse for $4. but then it was off to the rodeo. all i can say is it amazed me had how ill trained the horses where. but other than that we only stayed for till the barrel racing them hubby got board so we had to leave. but i did get some pictures and a video of one of the barrel horses that needed a lot more work!!

here is the video of the horse, i would love to hear what everyone thinks could have been done to help the situation.(i dont know either the rider or horse)

YouTube- rodeo mishap

and as soon as i get the pics loaded i add them, there was the cutest little girl riding her pony there.

I think that horse needs a few quiet trail rides. He wasn't just excited.

Wow...Umm I say that horse needs to be tought to stand quiet. He seems very stressed out though not excited. I wasn't the least surprised he dumped her...I would have either circled him and kept him working. Kept his mind on me and my ques or got off and lunged him or something not just sit up there. And who ever said it in the video was right. She was rewarding his bad behavior. He deserved a pop on the butt for all that rearing. That is not a safe habbit. I look forward to the pics :) Thanks for sharing by the way. I competed in a jr rodeo this last weekend. It was a blast!

Hmm watched the video agian. Could have been a pain issure maybe. When she would touch the reis around the turns he would really get agitated. She really pulled on him on the first and second barrel. Idk just a guess on my part though...Hmmmm

That horse needs to not see the arena or barrels for a very long time, if ever again. Very sour and hating his job. That was pure resentment on the horses part, not excitement at all. He needs to hit the trails and do lots of SLOW work and have probably his back checked in the very least.

Sorry to say but horses that behave that way in the arena are what gives all barrel racers and barrel horses a bad name.

Agreed. If my horses ever did that at the gate they would be in sooo much trouble. It almost could have been a tooth problem because of the way he acted turning... Lots of slow work and ground work could bennifit this horse ALOT

when i get home tonight ill post the rest, I'm running to get ready for work right now. but i agree with everyone that the horse needs to stop attempting to do barrels and go back to slow work and trails and let his mind relax some.

Very cute girls & their horses.
Anyone know what the strap is on the big horse's neck? I have no clue.

Very true!!

I'm not a barrel racer but I can see that this is resentment instead of excited/amped up. In other words, arena/barrel sour.

I would give this horse another job and IF barrels was to be introduced at another date and time would be in a relaxed way.

If you was asking on what to do at that moment when this horse was acting up. Well I would have gotten off that horse and scratched that run and lunged the shitz out of that horse to make him uncomfortable with his decision to rear. I don't do well with horses that rear. If you notice that horse was giving a warning to her numerous times and then there was a point that horse could have flipped over on her. Heed the warnings and change your approach of training and activity:)

Kids and horses are the cutest. Nice pic.

HAHA Bandit did that to me once at the beginning of a race but once I told him fine walk just walk ( just so we don't get diqualified ). He then looks at the barrels n desided its faster to run them. Took first tho.. HAHA But I feel for the girl had it happen to a friend. Sorry hubby got board.

Maybe horse isnt trained for barrels I noticed a roping saddle..

I see a lot of calf ropers that use that. Put the rope through it so the horse doesn't turn sideways

That horse has seen to many runs. It's "alley" sour, wasn't turning or flexing around the barrel, all the horse knows is going in there its going to have to run its hardest. Time for trails, and walking.

I loved the applause at the end LOL. That horse is barrel sour, and needs better training on slow work- perfect example of too hard, too fast training with no attention to 'little' things, like flexing and getting a horse up under itself at the barrel.

Agreed, do more than just barrel race on the weekend. And ride in an arena when your not going to run a pattern so the horse doesnt associate an arena with running.

OK im sorry but that is more than likely a ROPE horse that she has runs on for fun.. it wanted to back into the box a sit there and wait for the calf. look at the saddle. not propper gear for a hard core barrel rider. that is what makes me think she is a Roper. Horse not rider. ride was too hard on the horse into the first turn then hit the second turn not set up right that is why the horse more than likely did what it did. just my two cents.

Thats just ridiculous....why would they even let her run? She seems oftley used to that kind of behavior...I would have clapped when he got her off too...

Agreed, but the horse knows what the pattern is and refusing to turn to go. But not enough to be in the right lead. I think it was trying to switch leads halfway around the first barrel.

i dont see that this horse has ever done this before.. but i dont know it or the owner so i dont know .. maybe she was playing around at home or the rider had a dif. horse and something went south with that one and well here you go .. but hey two diffrent people are going to see diffrent things.

I have not read anyone's responses yet so I am sorry if I repeat. But in my opinion that horse has never seen the barrel pattern and was put into a situation that was wrong for the job it did know (which I would guess as a cow horse - roper maybe...) either way that horse was confused and had no clue what the rider was asking and that girl is lucky she did not get hurt.

Just my 2 cents.
