Finally got Dirften into the vet to take a look at his sheath bump. He told me it was one of two things a sarcoid or something called a shwana(sp). Wich is a smooth sheeth tumor and nomally accur on appies. He said there isn't a real big difference between the two types of tumors :( and the lines of how to treat them often blur and are the same.

He told us if we remove it, it could come back with a vengence if it is a sarcoid so we are taking plan B for spin. He prescribed this stuff called xxtera. He said it wasn't a for sure cure but it does work so we would give it a try. I have to apply it every day for 4-6 days and he also has to be on bute starting after two days because if it works the sarcoid will pop, ooze and litterally shrivel up and fall off wich will be quite painful for my boy. It sounds bad but I pray that occures because I want it to go away. I just wish he was totally healthy. It plays on my mind all the time. I do feel alittle less weighed down because I was able to get him into the vet and looked at. The meds cost more then the visit...:( If it doesn't work I'm not sure what our next move is going to be.

Anyways please keep Driften and I in your thoughts and prayers as we see what the next few days may bring.

I am hoping for the best for you both. If this is common in Appy's I'm sure your vet knows of the best treatment.
Please try to not worry too much.

Yes, Xterra might work. Al has a sarcoid problem and we did have one removed. It was behind a front leg and left a gapping hole which did heal. It did not come back. He has had others also. We tried Xterra and it worked but was expensive. The trouble with sarcoinds is that you never know what will work. What works on one horse may not work on another and what works one time may not work again. A girl at our barn uses toothpaste, I don't remember which kind, but it works on her horse. My daughter is going to give that a shot!
Good luck and I wish you success.

Anyways good luck and keep us posted.

Oh my gosh, the xxterra or Indian Mud is phenomenal. My friend's horse had sarcoids all over...got rid of all of them. She gave me some and it took a big wart right off the top of my dog's head. That should work. She told me that it costs a lot...is that true?

Thank you everyone for the prayers... I really want this stuff to work. It was alittle pricey but I have alittle money because of graduation so I was able to buy it. It was $40 for about half of a suringe. And it does look just like mud! What kind of sarcoids did your friends horse have Buckpoco? The vet said because Driftens is smooth it may not work but he said was worth a try. I will try anything soo if it doesn't work I will give toothpaste a try too.

I know ALOK's Legacy has/had sarcoids. She looked at xxtera and decided for the surgery, which was not only much cheaper, but if it recurred her vet would come back and remove it again for only the cost of the call. The big one he had removed was on his ear, though, not in a sensitive area like the sheath. Hope it works for you and you don't have to worry about it again.

I don't know what kind they were, but I can find out. The last one had just been removed when I met her...they never came back either.

That price you paid is just about what we paid so that must be the going price. The vet also told me that research is being done where a serum is made using the horse's blood and then reinjected and that it has produced moderate results. With sarcoids it is my understanding that there is no one thing that works reliably on all horses. Good luck and we try to deal with them when they are small. He came to us with the big one behind his leg and it must have been bigger inside than the vet thought because after it was removed, more of it feel out at home and left just the biggest hole I've ever seen. It was difficult to deal with because it was summer and took a while healing and the flies were ghastly.

OK, emailed my friend. Her horse had bubbly type sarcoids and smooth sarcoids. The Indian Mud got rid of both!

Wow grandmadeb I can't imagine...Sounds nasty. If the mud stuff doesnt work I want to look into getting it removed but I'm still alittle unsure...

Buckpoco that is very encouraging! I really hope it works on him. I have been applying it. But I'm not sure if I am correctly. It is a gritty paste and I just rub it on all over his lump. Its covered but not thickly coated or anything...I hope im putting it on right

I can't thank you guys enough...Your helping me have alittle piece of mind with all of this. Thats why I truely love this forum :) and I really appriciate everyones input :) :)

Today I start Dirftens bute. It's the paste kind and he is going to be getting a gram a day. He isn't a huge fan of getting wormed but will take it so this will be interesting lol
