While I was out mowing the yard a bit ago, my neighbor, the S & R, Firefighter, Storm Watcher(he does it all hu? LOL)came over.
He asked me if I was riding my horses, I said I sold the one I rode on the S & R(both horses were on the S & R), but still have the other and yes, Im riding her.
He lives across the street but pays no attention if he is outside and I ride by..LOL Alot on his mind usually.
Anyway, he tells me they had 2 S & Rs that they sure needed a horse on just the past 2 weeks.
Both were on horseback.
One guy got bucked off of his mount he has been riding for YEARS, and the horse commenced kicking the chit out of him. Not sure the rest of the story, but the guy had to be life flighted out. Not sure of the other story, but bad horse story also I guess.
The first guy was 1 1/2 hours(ops, that was miles not hours) in when they found him. What a long haul in this heat on foot.

So, now I need to get a big sponge put on my list, cause if he does call on me, I am not going without Myst carrying a gallon water bag with a sponge so I can soak her as needed.

He also just had a building built, told me he is doing leather repair. If you read my bridle thread, you know that I was excited!!!
I told him I needed the area Im cutting stitched and some holes punched. Im sure he will either charge me little or nothing.
Hes brought his bucket loader over and moved rock for me before and just had me buy him some diesel!! We had it on hand anyway, so that worked out well!!!

I do S & Rs for free for him and he helps me!!
Works!! Not like its often on either of our side, but its nice to know that we are good neighbors!
I also take horse poo over and put it in his mulch pile.
That actually helps us both. Me with space needed when Im out of room in my mulch pile, and he gets free poo for his!!

Guess Im gibbering now hu? LOL

Very cool. I've thought about and wanted to get involved in S&R before, but have always been limited by one thing or another. Now I feel like Bay is a little too old to be tasked with the miles and tough conditions it might require. But perhaps someday I'll be in the right place at the right time with the right horse to be able to participate.

I have been involved in SAR for a few years usu once or twice somebody wanders away from a church or scout camping trip and gets lost in the National Forest. Its rewarding, and its an adventure. I would recommend 1st and foremost a handheld GPS unit and good old fashioned compass as a back up so YOU dont get lost (it happens more than you think.)....Kevin

I guess the GPS would be a great thing to have, along with the compass. Thanks!!

I bet... and I'd think GPS is vital for being able to accurately report your position if you do find the guy.

I mean... real coordinates are better than "well, a ways down the trail by the creek past the bridge and up the hill by that big tree..."

Ok this is what I carry when I go out,
1 gl canteen
2 1 qt water bottles
gps
compass
.357 mag
matches
tinder
1st aid kit
granola/breakfast bars
power bar
powder drink (the kind they make for indivdual water bottles)
2 way radio (the SAR club all have the motorla sportsman radios all tunes to channel 2.0)
hard candy
2 individual instant coffees
boy scout mess kit
1 burner stove
1 small propane bottle
bug spray
lunch
couple pkg instant oatmeal/grits
lg ziplock bag with horse feed, and one of dog food (why is it food for dogs and cats but feed for all other animals?)
and it all stores neatly in my saddle bags. Now half (or better) of what I carry is worse case scenario stuff like in case I get caught out all night (like the propane stove), but in the words of Woodrow F. Call its better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it...........Kevin
