My barn owner said she is going to have him ridden Thursday to see if there has been any improvment since we put him on his supplement. Anything is better than nothing at this point. I'm pretty sure he has been running in the pasture, as he is getting his muscles back after the winter and is looking amazing. She and the farrier both say he has an old injury, so I am hoping it all works out like it somehow always has. I had one of the best vets around take a quick look last January and she said it looked ok and even said I could do barrels, just to watch it, thank God I never did barrels. My barn owner told me of a wonderful place to take Yogi if he can't be ridden, but most horses live out their lives there and I refuse to let him go unless I can get him back someday. I told her if she can't use him anymore, I will pay for feed and things. He is being leased right now, but can't be ridden. I also said that if need I will get a lighter Western saddle or an English saddle. My parents have mentioned taking him up to Purdue University to see if they can do something, so I do have some options. My boyfriend and I have talked about getting married someday and he is ok with him possibly being a pasture pet and has offered to help me pay off a loan if i need it to make him better, I'm lucky to have nabbed a good one this time. I just hope it works out like it always has for Yogi and I.

Just keep working on it, hopefully you can find something that helps, and some role he can do very well. :)

Thank you guys! I appreciate the kind thoughts. I am happy if he is just a good old trail horse. He will be perfect for my kids someday and I just want him out of pain. I hope to go up there Thursday and watch and possibly rode, but I might be better to watch, I will be too nervous. I am supposed to watch my little cousins, but they love my horse, so we may all be going up there!

Sorry to hear about Yogi. You all are in my prayers. It seems like everyone is having trouble this year with their horses. Keep us posted.

wasn't he ok before this farrier did him?? I don't remember there being problems before???
what does the vet say??

Yes, he has been ok before this. This spring we noticed him starting to limp at a trot or higher and we thought he had possibly pulled something as the weather got nicer, since we had never had problems before. she told me last night the farrier now thinks that this is an old problem flaring up. I checked out Purdue's website briefly last night, and it said they had a lameness exam or something, it was late and I was tired and upset. If Thursday doesn't go well, I am going to talk to my dad about a vet looking at it again, she said before that I should just watch it, but there was no alarming signs. So depending on Thursday, I will go from there. My parents seem very supportative and when I mentioned sending him to that place, they said wait and possibly a trip to Purdue. They said to call the original owner/breeder, but they knew his leg was not conformationally straight, and knew at that point I did not know much. I still love him to death, but will not call them. I wish in some ways we had never bought him because of the leg and with I had been smarter to see what they were doing, they told me as a 15 year old that that leg was Ok, but not to do barrels or anything like that. Had I known the problems he might have later in life, I would have re-thought my buying decesion. But he is mine and I love him with all of my heart and learned a very important horse buying lesson, and I and apparently my parents intened to do everything we can. they know I am paying off my laptop for school and have another bill to start paying from this summer, so I think they are willing to help me with expenses. I can't really afford another job because I have two now and school full time. I just hope something good comes out. Can anyone tell me of good vets or good people to check him out around the Terre Haute area in Indiana.

I've pretty much decided the last thing I will do is give him away! That is the absolute last resort, but if it is in his best interest, then I will do it.

Did you find out the farriers name??
WP~Paint
06-23-2010, 09:36 AM
Rockville was the one I took him too, I had heard that they are one of the best around for equine. Airport I think is the one the barn uses but my barn owner is a retired nurse, so she does all the shots and all that they can on their own. I am hoping that they can get him moving a bit better Thursday, that will give me some hope, but I might talk to my parents and see if we can't get him looked at to see just what it is. I forgot last night to see who the farrier is. I will check next time I am up there. I do know he does a fantastic job on their hooves.

I haven't personally used Rockville but I hear they are not good for lameness issues they also don't have a digital xray machine

I didn't have them do much besides look at it and it sounds like a good choice I made! I think I will talk to my dad and see if we can't take him somewhere to have him ex rayed and see just what is up with his leg and see if anything can be done.

He is being ridden this morning, so I hope to know soon how he did. I guess she started him on his supplements last night, which I took them up 2 weeks ago this upcoming Sunday, but I guess if he is better, then it was on his own. I talked to my dad and Peggy Sue told me of her vet over in Illinois and I am going to take him over there as soon as dad can go with me to help navagiate, but I plan on getting some x rays done just to see what exactly is going on with his leg. I don't think it is too serious, he walks and runs and plays in the pasture, but I want to know exactly what's up with it. As soon as I know what is up, I will update everyone!

He was rode by two different people at walk and trot and did not limp and was a bit more willing to work. There using him next week in Bible school and going to see how he holds up! And if he was started on a supplement last night, this was pretty much on his own. I still am going to talk to my dad about an x ray or two just to check into his leg.

Glad to hear he seems better... how long ago where his feet done and when did he show lame??

I believe his hooves were just done. He started to show lameness this spring, which is why we thought he just pulled a muscle when the weather started to warm up. She says rest and supplements were good for him. I might see if I can work some of the other horses and keep him to light riding. The supplements seem to help, and I'm going to talk to my dad tonight about x rays. I think it's all going to be OK though.

He is doing great! I am finally riding him tonight and I have been hearing praise on his smooth trot being back. They are using him about 4 hours a morning and letting the little kids ride, with minimal trotting, mainly because the kids are young and don't really know how to ride, but this is good exercise for him and my BO says she is amazed at how he is coming along. I have my saddle in my car and I am sooo ready to ride finally. One of the boys riding is about 7-10 pounds lighter than I am and they have been using a Circle Y or something similar to the weight of my saddle. Oh my goodness, I am sooo excited!

Thank you! I didn't dream he would come this far this fast. I am keeping it slow for now and just want to work on basic stuff and maybe a little bit of trotting, I just miss his nice smooth trot. I have his boots all ready to go. I am way over protective, but I don't want him hurting it again! I love his supplements, their cheap, but super good at healing him!

I'm glad to hear he's doing better, but I have a hard time believing that his leg is the problem. If there was a problem that suddenly showed up in a leg that he's had his whole life, I don't think it would disappear that easily. It would make sense that he would show improvement after a few weeks of the supplement, but if it's "all him," and the leg was the problem I would expect it to keep hurting until the supplement had time to get into his system. Crooked bones don't just up and fix themselves overnight.
Xrays certainely would help, and knowing what another vet thinks. Being on top of what his leg is doing will help you figure out what to do if he starts showing up lame again in the future- you'll know whether it's his leg or could just be normal horse lameness. And supplements certainley will help with lubrication and might prolong his riding life.
I mean I know what it's like to jump to the biggest problem with my gelding when he's mysteriously lame, only to find out that it was something totally unrelated to his arthritis. I also know a gelding with a bowed tendon that constantly ended up lame, and they blamed it on the tendon- the gelding was diagnosed with navicular.
I hope everything works out for you, especially if it was the leg that caused it. He sounds like a really nice horse.
ETA: Have a nice ride! And there's nothing wrong with being overprotective, although I might be a little biased, lol.

Yes, I do plan on getting x-rays. I hope to do so in the next couple weeks or so, but as long as he is doing well, I will not push it. I need to get money in order first. He was a dream to ride. I am so happy and blessed he is doing well.
