after working for a year to get sterling sound for hubby to ride her on trail rides we have finally made the decision to retire her. besides not being able to get her to stay sound she is a great horse, she is like a goat in these mountains but with a rider if she takes a mis step and stumbles(which with all the rock here she doed a lot even with shoes with pads) its too much strain on her to get herself and hubby back upright. we are going to have a vet come out and take some ex-rays of both front hooves to see whats going on in there. today was kinda the last straw for her. went out to feed and turn her loose to graze and she was limping again so i picked out her hoof to make sure there was nothing in there and there was what looked like a popped abscess, while i was messing with it to get all the dirt out it started bleeding. i am thinking it is like the other abscess but not thing we had with her that just healthy blood came out of. my farrier is backing me up 100% in this decision, we are are now just going to try to get her sound and comfortable. she may be sound some days to carry a rider but other days not. and until we get the ex-rays its all best guess. but right now i have her hoof wrapped with a pad on to keep crap out of it and give her a little protection from the rocks and i am going to order her a boot to keep on her till the hole heals up. she is going to stay with us, as hubby says she is his horse and we will always keep her. but she is just going to be a pasture pet from now on unless the vet finds different( pray what ever she finds it wont be too bad!!)

Awww. I think it's fantastic that you have planned to retire her and have her live with you. :) I'm so glad that despite this mess, she will always be with you.

Keep us posted on the x-rays.

I'm so sorry she isn't sound but I am so happy she has a forever home with you, so many people would send her off because she's not pulling her weight. Mine are ridable normally [except when Sarge's eye flares up or they have an abscess] but are pretty much pasture pets. I ride Delta at my friend's stable but these guys just hang out and play mostly. They are fun to watch. Hopefully she will heal up soon.

I hope you get good news from your vet but if you don't I think it's great that you can keep her in her retirement! Just remember, she may not be sound enough to trail ride but she'll always be sound enough to be your husbands friend. And on good days she can take him around the pasture.

thanks everyone, she is only 13 so that is what is so sad about this and she loves to go, she has to be in the lead when she was sound (somewhat) for trails and always happy to be out. even if she started limping she would want to still go. so its braking my hubby's heart to have to do this but hopefully we can find a flat place to move to without the rock and she will get better. here is a pic of her and hubby(thankfully all that scrap metal in the back ground is now gone) she is so his horse.

That is a beautiful picture. You can't beat a true bond with a horse.

You're doing a wonderful thing by deciding to keep her and offer her a forever home as a pasture pet, even if you can't ride her anymore :) Good job, she's lucky to have such a great owner!

I am sorry you are having so much trouble keeping her sound. I know excatly how you feel. I just made the same decision with my girl. She is 13 as well. So young and had so much potential. Just can't find the problem. I am so glad you are going to be keeping her. Keep us updated. I hope you can get her comfortable enough :)

I am still hoping for the best, I know you have done everything in your power to heal her but still, just maybe, with time, she can get better; maybe not enough for an adult rider but perhaps for a youngster riding in a sandy arena?

that is kinda what we are hoping for. i used to give riding lessons and she would have made the perfect lessons horse, but until we get her to stop limping and tripping i cant put someone one her who does not have their balance.
