I decided I'm going to offer horse training this summer off of my own property. I need a good contract though. I've been surfing the web but all the contracts I could find were either totally lacking or way over the top. Anyone know where I can get a good one?
And yes, I'm aware of all the liability stuff so no need to lecture (and I have insurance) ;)

Well good luck then! I hope someone here has a good contract for you to use.
Daughter's lawyer drew a simple one up for her. I can give some high points of it.
She set her daily fees. Set guaranteed numbers of rides in "x" amount of time. Set expectations for the horse being ready with vaccinations, trimming and soundness. She specified trimming/shoeing because it's difficult to get a farrier where she is. Mentioned soundness because as a kid she took on a horse, it showed up slightly lame and wasted time getting it sound then the owner was mad the horse didn't get the expected number of rides.
She also spelled out who was responsible for what costs (feed's included, vet calls not) and got permission to call a vet, any vet, if the horse needed it for emergency care and the owner couldn't be reached. She specified "any vet" because she didn't want to have an emergency and then some owner saying they wouldn't pay the one she ended up having to get out.
After the first year, she had to get advice on adding an "abandonment" clause. One woman dumped a "mustang" on her. The woman's eldery mom insisted on paying at least part of what was owed, but my daughter was still stuck with a smallish horse she didn't need.
Don't know if any of this helps, but it may give an idea of things you want to include.

Dont forget to Put something in thier about broken tack, cause when I was training a friend or a friends cod cross pony, he broke his halter and she expected me to pay for a new one because he was under my supervision, even tho he was still on her property. I thought It was silly. I still bought him s new one tho. Just thought It was stupid. so yeah thats what I got to help lol

ridiculous that she expected you to pay, but also why I send everything home with the owner and only use mine................Kevin
My daughter and I use our own gear, too. Mostly because we trust it, but getting stuck paying for what is either and accident or junk is a good reason, too.
I don't do contracts when I work a horse. I go to the person's place and they pay me when I ride. Pretty simple.

Thanks guys. I have a list of stuff I need to put in there, I'm just not sure how to mush it all together so it sounds legal and whatnot :p

Peggy's advice of taking an existing contract and modifying it is a good one. Keep the format and change the wording to what you want in there. Just post your draft on here and we can help you clean it up.
