So when i moved to idaho Dreamer was switched to safechoice to make feeding easier for gemsmom. As we all know what works great for one horse wont work for the next. Sadly i dont think Dreamer is doing good on safechoice( hes getting the proper amount and everything... His coat has gotten really light red and dull compared to last year, and turn out time is the same as last year too... while i was gone he ripped a big chunk out of his mane, we are trying to get it to grow back out with MTG and cheap conditioner.... but anyway after looking at these pics i will be switching him back to strategy( only reason i changed was to help gemsmom as we couldnt separate). He didnt get rode or messed with while i was gone( 4-5 mos) over winter. and honestly i havent rode him much since being back in illinois,( once a week or so) theres just not been time( getting ready for texas in 3 weeks..long story). He got his teeth floated and a GE last friday. any way, the boy is 4 now, wow hes getting old.
TELL ME ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING YOU SEE WITH HIS CONFRO, YOU WONT HURT MY FEELINGS, TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK HE NEEDS IMPROVED ON AND WHAT EXERSIZES YOU THINK WOULD WORK BEST! IF YA CAN GIVE ME DETAILED DETAILED DETAILED JUDGING! THANKS A BUNCH!

I think his health and weight are fine. I've never been one to worry about color.

hes got dandruff, coats not as shiney as it usually is this time of year,, redder than he normally is this time of year, hair more brittle, personality is different, hooves weaker, and a gut instinct telling me hes not doing well on it. just all around not the same Dreamer.

** NEED TO ADD*** this is NO fault of gemsmom, she took AWESOME care of him. and if i had the choice and needed to i would leave him with her all over again.

OK - well you know him, and his potential best.... can you switch him to something else now? Whatever you had him on before?

Do you give him any additional supplements? Fred had dandruff that was caused by too much Vitamin A from combined grain and supplements. Took it out and he got a LOT better fast.
There is a definite change, but coat color could depend on the weather and sun, too. Dunno where you used to be before gemsmom took him in, or where you are now. Change in pasture and hay could cause it, too.

no additional supplements.
turnout/pasture/hay all the same as its been all of his life except while i was gone in idaho.

Looks like hes sunbleached. Could be the reason for his dry coat and dandruff too. Put a sheet on him if you like, it will help. Also conditioning the coat (think showsheen or the like) will help with the sun. So from what youre saying, he just seems 'dried out' all over? coat, hooves, etc? I feed Cadence (same thing as Strategy) and Horse Guard, and it has done wonders for Vegas' coat and hooves. BRB- I will post up before and after!

:-( iv been conditionering him everyday( which is improving the dandruff no its not from conditionering too much)( healthyhair care) used since he was a weanling, and flyspray has sunscreen in it.

Afters are the first two, before are second two. The befores were the day I got her in the first week of March. The afters were the 2nd of May, so less than 2 months later!!!!:)

Well, go back to what worked. If it doesnt improve his overall health in 30 days, maybe there is more to it than just nutrition.

whew, I was like ack! what did I do? lol
Gem bleaches out something terrible every summer. I tried spray with sunscreen in it but it didn't help at all. Guess he'll just be lighter in the summer months. Gulliver gets awesome looking copper highlights from the sun.
If you transition the feed slooooowly you can just switch it whenever. Not sure that I'd change him cold turkey especially if you're moving.
Or try adding a skin/coat conditioning supplement? I think majesty's wafers makes one... they're in cookie form :-) My horses love the joint sup from them.

did he have less shade at Gemsmom? Maybe his favorite spot was out in the sun? He just looks sunbleached to me but we obviously can't see the dandruff...Prado got really dandruffy after his colic surgery could it be linked to the stress of being away from you?

As far as his confo, I like him. He's set under himself a little more than most. But that is not always a bad thing (to me).
He's pretty well balanced.
As for his coat, aloe vera oil (grocers sell it) works wonders and you only need add a capfull.

today, i bought some corn oil which im going to start adding to his diet to help his coat, and another bag of safe choice because for some reason my purina dealer was closed today??? i figure it will just allow me to make the transition slower.
KEEP THE CONFRO JUDGING GOING GOOD OR BAD I LOVE TO HEAR PEOPLES OPENIONS ON HIM
