I know it's a weird topic but hey...We are horse people, we talk about poop :)

Muffin can't go on the "fly", he has to stop to poop. Is your horse like this? Fussy when it needs to go or has to pick it's spot before it will go?

I guess because Muffin is young and I don't ride him yet I have never pushed him to go on the "fly" so he doesn't know he can. He gets fussy when tied if he has to go and will try to hold it and not go were he is standing. He likes to pick were he wants to "go" and has favorite areas on the property that he prefers.

He wont go in a trailer or at the vets even when the vet needs a sample!! lol But, he will go in the trailer the second we pull into our driveway and he knows we are home?

Does anyone have a horse that is this "picky" about his "business"?

Tanner used to refuse to walk when pooping and put up a hissy fit if I asked him to go. It took a few good bucks for him to realize that, Hey, walking and pooping isn't so bad after all - and its it a line so it's harder for mom to clean up!!:hysterical:
I swear, that's what he thinks lol.
Tanner will poop where ever now, he'll go whenever he needs to. However, he will not pee when being ridden lol

Well that's just strange, not pooping on the trailer! LOL And even funnier that he will once he knows he's home! :D

I don't have my own horse at the moment, but I can tell you that when you're a horse-hopper like me, it's funny how some days you'll nudge immediately when a horse stops in his tracks, thinking he's being a bugger when really he's just "gotta go.." Yet others, you'll think they have a legitimate reason for stopping only to realize after five seconds or so that they're just taking a little "me time!"

edit: Luv2- harder for Mom to clean up.. Ha ha!!!

Arrow always stops to poop, almost every time, unless he's all het up about something, then he keeps moving.

lol, Well at least I know it's not just Muffin. lol Tanner and his nice row of poop for Mommy :)lol

While lunging Muffin will slow down and sniff the ground in one section then pick up his Pace to get around the circle to get back to that area then slow down again with his nose on the floor. He will keep doing this and won't "go" unless I whoa him up at that spot and let him go. It's annoying but he will hold it and be uncomfortable tell I just stop him and let him "go" so we can get on with are session and hes not all stiff and sniffing the ground. I guess I could just try to push him tell he goes on the fly but I don't think he will and if he gets to the point where he just has to go he will slam on the brakes and go.

The first and second time to the vets (it's almost an hour trip one way) he didn't go in the trailer or at the vets. As we pull into our driveway we stop the truck, I get out and open the gate for Mom to pull though. He sees me, looks around realizes were home, lets out a whinny and goes in the trailer as Mom is pulling in? He was very happy to be back home, he never whinnies at anything but Me or another human that he recognizes. Never other horses even if they whinny at him and hes a Stallion?

I have a weird horse? lol I will have to work on trying to get him to poop on the fly so he will hopefully get over the having to stop to go before we start his saddle training. Maybe his driving training will brake him of that if I push him to keep moving? We will see....

I look at and for poop all the time because with his impaction history I need to know if he is producing. He poops in the trailer, the wash stall, swings his butt to leave piles on both sides of the aisle. He will sometimes stop to poop if being ridden but I think it is because he needs an "excuse" to stop. Sometimes he does not stop.

City and Myst will stop to poo. I trail them, so its no big deal.
The poo in the trailer freely. And if needed a pee will come about, they arent shy...LOL
When we ponied them for church, I had to walk a few times to go pick up poo. Hey, ya gotta go ya gotta go, why we have mommy to pick up after us.

Storm will not walk and poo, he must stop rofl. He'll learn though. Honestly it's just something they have to learn to do, I mean, why walk and poo when you can just stand there ya know?

My 17yo ArabX gelding is absolutely adamant about stopping to poo. I remember once I was ponying him and he stopped so hard he almost yanked me off my horse! Then he just gives me "the look" - you know, "what's the problem, mom? I just had to poo...". He's old and set in his ways - I don't ride him enough for it to be a real problem, but I'd have to put some major effort into it if I wanted to train him not to (and I just don't care enough!).

My gelding likes to stop at the poopy pile since it is in the lunge pen. I usually let him do it, I can tell he wants to stop. I have not starting showing or anything so its not an issue with me. On trail rides or on the road I don't think he cares much. Honest, with a WHITE horse, you WANT them to stop and poop, otherwise their butt is GREEN.

The pooping habits of all our horses here is pretty hilarious, lol :)

Biggs likes to wait until he's in his stall to poop, however, if we are out for a good long ride he'll poop (and yes, he will walk or trot while pooping). I usually ride and then give a good grooming then put him away, and the minute I put him away he walks over to the back corner of his stall to poop. I can tell he tries to hold it. One funny thing is that if I don't give him something fun to do (like eat) while I'm cleaning his stall he'll follow me around and at some point he'll get his butt faced right at me and drop a big one. Most the times I know well enough to catch it in the rake before it even touches the ground, lol.

Ladybird stopped right in the middle of an event with Cheyenne last month. Cheyenne keep trying to kick her, but Ladybird just did her thing and when she was done she finished the pattern. Cheyenne was sooooo mad...:hysterical:

Dallas will go anywhere, BUT out on the trail he HAS to stop and "sniff" whatever piles are on the trial. Kinda like a dog. I swear one of these days I think he is going to stop over another horses pile and mark it!

Both mine stop when they have to go. I don't know if they would walk and go at the same time, because I never asked them too.

After a ride, both Beauty and Dakota (depending on who I rode that day) have to pee as soon as they get back in the pasture. I guess they hold it the whole time. Occasionally Beauty will go in the arena right before I mount up, like she knows she better go now while she still has the chance.:p

Dakota has only stopped to pee while riding once or twice the whole time I've owned him, and Beauty has never gone undersaddle I don't think.

Gypsy won't go while I'm riding her, either- probably a carryover from our showing days, lol!

However, the few times horses have ever even gone past my place, you can bet that she'll have to sniff the piles the next time we go out!

Lol what a humoriuos (sp) thread : ). One time in the middle of a pole run at a gymkana just as I was heading home my paint horse had to "go." So he hit his brakes and would not move till he wa finished nomatter how hard I tried. I was kinda upset lol. But yea he will now "go" on the go lol. As for my lil quarter horse he will "go" while walking, anytime or place he feel like it. And he loves to pee while Im riding. Hey isnt it funny that horses love to poo in a clean trailer?! Does anyone know why?

both my horses will go while moving. it makes things interesting when working and your horse has to stop to poop, but dusty has never peed when i was riding. she prefers to wait till she is in her potty area in her paddock. she is a very tidy mare.

My guy is very picky where he poops. I was told it's a stallion thing???/ Only against a wall or fence line and he will actually stop eating grass in the middle of the pasture and go to the edge to poop then back to wherever he was eating. But he definitely has to stop when pooing. I can push him when I'm in a group trail ride cuz it doesn't want to ge left behind.....LOL In the trailer no problem......

Cloud won't skip a beat while we are out on the trail. Walk or trot & poop and you won't even know he was doing anything, Bones will slowwwww down to almost a stop. But if I ask him to pick up his pace he will. One time I was out trail riding with my son on Bones. He stopped to poop(Bones not my son LOL). I told my son to ask him to keep walking. My son said "no".. I wouldn't want to walk and poop so I am not going to ask him to." Well I couldn't argue with that ..We have this hill we go up on and stop to enjoy the view. And every time we go up there Bones will pee.. Some times Cloud will then pee too. It is almost like they are marking their territory. Bones pees sometimes 2 times while we are out and always saves some for the top of that hill. In the pasture, they seem to have a pooping spot away from where they eat and hang out. I have watched Cloud eating his hay and just walk over to the side poop and then come back to eat. Bones did not do this when I first got him but I guess Cloud taught him some manners. Well that's their story!

Easter will poop on the run and not stop. Brutus will poop as soon as he stops and every single time I put him on crossties. Its like his permission to poop I guess.

Stitch has got a saying that he lives by--"When in doubt, poop." If I'm riding him and something gives him a scare, he stops immediately, unloads, then waits to see what I want him to do. It's actually kind of funny. You can pick out the items along the trail that concerned him...

Chico will always stop in the same place on the trail rides that I lead to pee on the same spot. It's uncanny how he does it. It doesn't matter if I take out only one trail ride, or if I do 3 or 4 back-to-back; he's going to stop in the same place at the RV park. Funny thing is that I never see him pee at home...I guess he likes his privacy there.

Prince will stop with the carriage when he's ready to go. Fortunately, he has a "diaper," so I don't have to go back and scoop the street, unless he misses... I'll be in the middle of some description about the town, and we come to a screeching halt. I have to tell the customers that "we're having a brief nature pause." Most folks laugh. I did have one 10 or 12 year old girl get hysterical because "it smells so bad." Hmm, it never really bothers me...

I don't think I've noticed a pattern with Charlie. He has decided that the new farm's stall runs are an ideal place to go, in spite of the fact that they are directly open to the 2 pastures. He's got 5 or 6 acres to do his thing, but he's gonna make me scoop the stall runs. Cantankerous old goat.

ya know, ive always thought about this and a horse should be able to work and poop at the same time. But think about how you would feel if you had to run around and poop at the same time?

I have thought about this too... I mean it might be easier if we could just go while moving but we are not set up to do that and we have to sit, squat or bend over somehow. Horses on the other hand are set up to go while moving but I think for the horses that won't it's just a preference and that they have never been pushed to get over it and figure out they can.

Muffin is very dramatic when he goes, He really gets into a pose and makes a big event of it. I have seen horses go while walking and it seems to be easier on them and done faster.

I knew a percheron mare that was very dramatic about it and would grunt if standing still, not so dramatic when pulling a cart and moving. So this leads me to believe that it's actually easier to go when walking or moving.

But, I think they have to learn that they can go while walking but some have to be pushed to figure it out.

nice theory... makes sense. some horses definitely make scene about it tho. a pony a ride HAS to poop in a corner of the arena and HAS to stop. hehe
