View Full Version : Speaking of trailers-Titan? Yea or nay?

Seeing as Kevin is still trying to find my perfect engagement trailer I thought I would get an interim trailer.
I found a used Titan stock in excellent condition & am supposed to go see it tomorrow. Someone told me they are crap, heavy, unbalanced, hard to back !?
I realize a steel trailer will be heavy but are they junk?
I'm looking for a 4 horse stock, BP or GN. I tried reading trailer reviews but they all seem to be written by those making or selling them, not actual users.
What is a good brand of stock trailer? Any help is appreciated.

Alot of people in my area have the titans I think they are pretty good trailers for the price ... look for a Circle J that is what I have and LOVE it...
althought none of my friends have complaints with theirs except they sweat really bad in colder months camping

Steel is just fine. Both my little no name older than dirt two horse straight load and now my 09 two horse slant are both steel trailers and they have served me well. I went with Thuro-bilt but I do not think they send them that far east (they are made in Oregon). My advice after selling trailers for a year, look for one you like with features you will use and as long as it has a solid floor and good axles go with your gut; If you love it go with it, But any shady feelings or red flags run the other way.
Oh and both mine where and are bumper pulls, I got the straight load because it was conveniently for sale and needed something qualifying as a horse trailer. My slant load was big enough and easy to pull with a ½ ton truck. I have nothing against goosenecks just have not been in a position where one for me was affordable at the time I was shopping.

I have a steel trailer. Heck in the past thats all they had.
Change in material make people think, well now, I have galvanized, or alum, so the steel is junk. Take care of it, youll be fine!!

Steel is alot of times sturdier than alluminum. You just usually need a bit more truck/fuel to pull them.
Brands to stay away from:
-Ponderosa... cheaply made, thin frame, warp easily, cheap cheap cheap!
-Bonanza... a small step above ponderosa, but not much better.
Good brands:
WW
CM
Circle D (just got one of these... it's amazing)
Sundowner
4-star
Tow-lite
Horton
Fetherlight
Bee
But if it's a used steel it's all about how it's been cared for. I know I ruined my first trailer because I didn't know any better, and in 3 years it was a rust bucket. We have 4 steel trailers at the farm. 1BP and 3 GN (2h straight, 3h slant, 4h slant) Steel is far from junk if it's well taken care of. As far as balance and backing... that's a trailer to trailer thing (and it could be their truck/abilities).

now my S&h is just a little 2h bp but i have to say that trailer pulls GREAT(steel) i assume if you find a 4h in that brand it would be fine. my friend kristy also has a bonanza and it pulls great to, but is cheap. that is if the titan doesnt work out for you.

We have a lot of Titan trailers down here. Many people love them and I was going to buy one before I came across the LQ that we bought instead. I personally liked the Titan better than the CM. I looked at both.
My next 2 horse slant will either be a Titan or a Circle J.

This is the add. The lady said it has a scratch on one fender & the stick on stone guard on the front is peeling off. It has been always stored indoors. I'd keep it inside also. Does the price seem right? I priced them new a few years ago at around 6K, I imagine the new price is higher now.
I would only use it for short hauls. Also do you know if it could be made into a 3 horse slant with tack in front? Would it be wide enough for that?
Thanks for all the help.

I have a steel 2-3 horse Monarch slant stock trailer. I never use the 3rd horse part and my 'tack room' area in the front is firmly settled into.
I found this one as a steal, but I wanted a Bison stock. They are very nice ... a lot of people in the UP have Bison stock. Appleton/Green Bay/Wausau area has some good dealers if I remember correctly. I would have jumped at a Titan too if I could have found a lightly used one within my budget.

I can't tell by the photo's if it is wide enough to make it into a slant trailer.
Not sure what the prices range in your neck of the woods, but I think $3,500 is a tad steep. Based on the fact it's a "stock" trailer, with no tack room, it's 12 years old and I would put rubber on all those kick boards.
Here is what they sell for new...

This one is an "03" with a front dressing/tack room and the slant dividers

And this one is enclosed with a tack room in the front and back.

Now you guys have my head spinning:confused:
If this trailer is in new condition wouldn't it make sense to save a few thousand buying it instead of new? Though a tack compartment would be nice.
I'll be taking a mechanic with me (for free)to check it out :p

sure wish you could travel. Been coming across a lot of trailers for sale that are descent prices too:) (and no rust!)
As for the price of this trailer, well that is buyers perception on the cost of it. It does appear to be in like new condition but can't figure out whats on the headliner, if she lined it with some insulation or ?. If I liked the trailer I would offer her about $3000.00 for it.
But I don't know about turning it into a 3 horse slant. It appears to be a narrow trailer and I would be afraid having a horse toward the back end of this trailer would make it fish tail too much. Not enough weight in the front end. I could be wrong and I'm sure some your mechanic might be able to give a view point on this too.

I bought and sold trailers for about 3 years over the border here in MN. I bought a trailer nicer than that one for $2000 and resold it for $3400. It was a 1999 Kiefer Built Stock. It was 18 ft long and 6.6 high.
You can definitely do better then that price you're seeing. If you like that one then ho and hum a lot. Stop near a rust spot and sigh, then say, "Well... I'll probably wanna get those spots fixed, so would you consider coming down on the price?" then low ball "Would you come down to $3000?" See where it goes from there. $3000 is really where the price should be. Anything above that is purely supply/demand $$$, not actual value.
Oh, and by the way... I got the 3rd trailer I flipped for $1800 and they were asking $3000. So it can be done. Be honest about what you feel you should pay and tell them.

Well anything is worth what the buyer is willing to pay. ;) If you look at it and really like it and your mechanic friend thinks it's sound, then go ahead and get it. It is a pretty trailer. I just prefer to have a tack room to haul my stuff and I would not be comfortable with raw wood like that. Rubber would be installed immediately. :D
Let us know how it goes and what your mechanic says. :) If YOU like it, get it, but also think about if you are going to be satisfied with it later on. :D

It is a stripped beginner kind of trailer & while I would also love to have a tack area I'm too cheap. Most people around here have huge fancy things but they are really die hard showers or campers. I don't do either. It's been 20 years since I've owned a trailer so I hope I'd be happy with something like this.
AZ would be a long way to go.
I don't care for the wood either but depending on how it's installed I could live with it.

No go on the trailer. Though it looked brand new the max inside height was only 6'6"
No way a Saddlebred would fit in there.

This is pretty common in stock trailers. They're made for cows. Horse trailers are taller.
Now, Bay's very long and upright, but did OK in a stock trailer loose by himself in a compartment, where he could stretch out. As long as you're not cramming them in there tight, stock trailers can work even with giraffe horses. Get them a head bumper just in case. :)
Or... buy a slant horse trailer that's taller.

we have 2 huge titan stock trailers on our farm, and they haul about 15 head of cattle at a time, and they are used all the time, and they have never caused us any problems, we have 500 head of cattle that we move a lot. Titans are great!!!

6'6 is still one of the most common standard heights in horse trailers. A 16 hands horse or below is quite comfortable in it.
Mine is only 6'6, older model, and I have had no problems with it and the majority of horses. My next will be 7'6 or larger because one of my horses is 17.2.
