I went on a Duke of Ediburgh practice walk today, from Lanchester to Allensford, in a wiggly kinda way. I know we covered at least 6 miles, but it sure hurts a lot more ;) anyhoo, I got out my phone (dad forbade me from taking the camera, he said I'd get it wet - you should have seen the state of my boots :p) and snapped some scenic countryside, with the help of my friends :)

Morning, the mist wasn't quite risen:

From the viaduct - it's a long, long way down...

This is Sazzle, my DoE buddy, who specifically captioned this as "There are lots of random Spaz's that live in the countryside...I mena, Saz's..."

Final picture, Allensford valley

There was even a waterfall at the end! So pretty...but if everyone hadn't been jostling me to get home I woulda snapped some nice pics D:

That's yer lot ^__^ felt I owed you guys something after seeing all these gorgeous snowy pics, and seeing as we're still stuck in Autumn...

Such beautiful countryside! Thanks for sharing, Katy. What do you mean by Duke of Edinburgh practice walk? It's practice for a longer walk coming up in the future?

Anyway, thanks again. The photos make me think of the James Herriott books.

JackieB I had a feeling they might :p
Glad you both enjoyed it!

Yeah, the Duke of Edibrugh award consists of quite a few things but the final test is a 2-day walk covering I forget how many miles, with a camping stop in the middle. We need to find our own way, set up our own camps, cook our own food etc, so today was a pratice to show what people can expect from the future walks - we had several unprepared people in tennis shoes >_< they didn't feel very clever crossing fields ankle-deep in mud :D

Wow! What beautiful country! I've seen pics on TV and in books, but yours seem more real for some reason. From being off your phone, those are some mighty good picks! You must have one nifty phone!

Sounds like that walk would be a lot of fun, as well as a lot of work!

A lot of people don't have any idea how valuable a good pair of hiking boots are for...well...hiking. :) The support they provide for your ankles and overall protection for your feet can't be overstated. I've done some serious hiking in really tough terrain (Isle Royale National Park - off trail, for example) and a quality pair of hiking boots are worth every penny (or pound :)).

I have a two-year-old Motorola Razr v3i...the perspex cover of the camera has actually come off :D so most photos come out blurry (e.g. Lumley ones) and I have to adjust the colouring in Photoshop. But the results have come out really excellent today!!
It's only 2.3 MP, but hopefully for xmas I'm getting a new phone with a better camera - looking at a Sony Cybershot or an LG with 5MP. That'd do me fine ^_^

Beautiful pictures! The test sounds fun. Good luck!

It is SO much fun! As wella s this we have to do 6 months volunteering, 6 months sport (I did horseriding ;)) and 6 months doing a skill (cello for me). Seeing as I've done all those things for at least 2 years, I think I'm sorted for my Silver and Gold DoE awards as well!

Isle Royale is an amazing wilderness national park. Moose are awesome animals. I took the picture of the one below while hiking in a remote area of Isle Royale. I came upon him eating aquatic vegetation out of this beaver pond. It was just him and me and I spent quite awhile there observing him and taking photos before continuing on.

Moose are very large animals. This one probably weighed 900 lbs or more and would have been about 15hh in horse measurements (moose are not measured this way, of course). They can be dangerous, so be sure to give a moose a wide berth if you are fortunate enough to see one in the wild. I was photographing this one with a super telephoto lens and I also had my tree all picked out if he decided to charge me. But he wasn't concerned with my presence at all and was still in the pond grazing when I left.

Hope you don't mind me hijacking your thread. I really love Isle Royale. :)
