I gotta get a hay rack for the winter (it's a must!).
I asked my neighbor if she knew where to get one and she told me she JUST bought this "hay basket" from TSC (steep though $400) but she had a 10% coupon.
It looks sweet!

I planned on getting the standard 5ft hay rack with the bunk underneath but people have told me I had better get a sturdy one or they tip and also the horses fluff hay all over the place.

That is sweet. I wonder if you could find someone that is a welder that could make you one close to that design. It would be a whole lot cheaper

It's nifty for summer, but I'm not sure I'd want to use it here in winter, outside. Don't you have a big lean-to off the barn that they have access to all the time? I'd put racks on the wall there, out of the weather, at least in my climate.

I don't have a lean-to ... only our barn. I put hay in their stalls and they can roam in and out as they feel necessary but I like to also put hay AWAY from the barn so the poop don't build up.
Also, 2 of my dogs make it a habit of pissing on their hay ALL THE TIME! I wasted so much last winter!

We LOVE it! We have used it for the past 3 or 4 years. It saves SO much hay. It was well worth the price. They can't step all in the hay or rub their manes off sticking their heads through other hay feeders. You can just leave the gate side off and it is fine as well.

i like this one but i can see my dogs, cats and goats jumping in it and using it as a bed. have you tried to get some old produce plastic crates? the big white ones that are about 4' x4' x 3' it think. that is what we used at an old boarding stable and they held up great. ill see if i can find any pictures of them.

We got it from the feed store. Maybe TSC, if not it was the local feed store. No, hardly any falls through and what does I just scoop up and throw to my pony in the next paddock.

You mean you used the produce crates too? I'd love to see a pic. I didn't know TSC sold stuff like that, might have to run over and check it out later.

if you have any big orchards around you see if they have any that they would be will to sell. thats where they got theirs from. they are used for shipping and storing produce.

I found something similiar or just like it here - http://www.decadeproducts.com/products/MACX/vented.html ... but cost $250 a piece and that doesn't include shipping. If those are the same quality, she got major lucky getting them!

those look like them but they got them used. they where old one that the shipping company donated to the "rescue" horses we had. most where all cracked along the bottom so they could not be use to transport produce without the worry of the bottom giving out when they moved them. but for the horses they where fine.
