Rubbing it in, only, if, you cant walk up to your horse, no halter, ect, and worm them, no head tossing, nothing, and then they still follow you as you walk away to get fly spray and spray them down, and put their mask on. Of course, she thought there may be a treat involved when she wormed so well, but she still followed...LOL

I love Myst, shes the best!!!

Yay!!!

I feel like a tactical marine trying to worm Dena... the approach is the worst. I need running NG style commentary for that.

I love myst, too!

Wow she is a good girl!
I can almost do it with Crystal...except I have to lock her in the stall. Than I don't need the halter. If she was loose and spotted the wormer in my hand she would take off and stay away from me as far as possible. She hates wormer. She only lets me do it when she knows she has no chance of getting away. If she is in her stall she is actually really nice about it.

Spraying and shots she doesn't mind at all though.

My boys are easy like that :-) It's so nice. Glory was not amused when I wormed her, it ended up all over her and me... we'll be working on that lol

Myst is so good. Most of the horses at the stable just get wormed with no problem they just stand there. My two here hate it. I tried hiding it in their food like I did for Dommie [He always licked the dish] but they won't touch the food. The don't want any part of wormer any way I try it.

I've never tried it without holding their halters--they really don't pull away but I think they would try to avoid me if they could. Myst is one ina million Vick!

No, its to darned hot..LOL. But I could of;)
OK on the 2nd note.

I think its cool that so many have horses that are so good for their worming!!
You usually hear all the horror stories, ie, wearing it, ripping off an arm just to hold the halter, ect.

Yes I know the feeling. Abby is great about stuff like wormer or fly spray, she may give me the "yucky" face but she puts up with it. lol.

I honestly don't know why mine are so good about it. They've always been that way. Back at school students took care of the worming which can be a good/bad thing. For some it was their first time doing it, for others they knew how to do it. But let loose 10 students with tubes of wormers on 40+ horses and it gets messy lol. I was out at the farm one day (must have been summer) and one girl was going about worming everyone by herself. The riding herd was up in the catch pen and she had most of the horses done. One particular mare was a bear to catch and flighty to handle. I asked her if she wanted a hand, like I'd hold she'd worm or something like that. She says no and proceeds to tie the horse to a fence post and then tried to worm her. Surprise surprise the mare pulled back and broke the rope and was now running among the rest of the herd trying not to get caught again. Need help now? No, I got it. Um ok, and I went and did something else lol.

Same thing with shots, they're so good. Just stand tied in the barn while the vet and I chat and he pops in the shots. Even when we microchiped them, he was ready for a rodeo and I was like, nah, they'll stand. Didn't even flinch! I'm very very spoiled by them.

Java, that paint mare of my friend's was entertaining to deworm. Caught her in the pasture all nonchalant, put on halter and poped the tube in her mouth. Her head went way up but she's short so I held on fine and got most of it in, some around the face and on me but that's ok. For shots it took two hands for me and the vet. Java against the wall both of us on the same side. Vet pinching her shoulder with one hand, poping in shots with the other. One of my hands on the lead rope and the other firmly clamped on her nose. Who needs a twitch? At Java's new home everyone is encouraged to pet, poke and tug on that mare to get her used to everything :-)

I remember the first time I wormed Koda, first time I ever wormed any horse actually. My friend was telling me horror stories about how hard it is to worm and then when we went out she says we'll do one of her horses first so I can see how it's done then do Koda. So she fights with her gelding for about 7-8 minutes, gets him wormed, and then hands me the wormer for Koda and tells me to just walk up to him normal but don't let him see the wormer or he'll fight it worse. So I put the wormer at my side and kind of behind me and start to him. Then she yells 'No! Don't hide it!' so I'm like how do I not let him see it with out hiding it??? She had me so confused and Koda was just looking at me like I was nuts, moving this wormer all around me and stoping and walking and my friend yelling. So I just thought screw it, it's over now I'm just gonna do it. Walked up, took hold of his halter, stuck the tube in his mouth and that was the end. He didn't fight me at all! Other then wanting to spit it out, but he didn't fight me holding his head up to prevent it. I've never had a problem worming Koda, it's not his favorite but he doesn't fight me. I've even let him smell the tube before worming him and he didn't fight it. Good Boy! It also only took one time using the spray bottle fly spray to get him over his fear of it. I used to pour it on a rag and wipe it on him but this time I got the bottle.

Koda will let me do all that, except his feet. He hates his feet messed with, left over from getting beaten by a farrier once I think. Sometimes he'll let me do his front but never his back unless he's tied. He loves his ears rubbed though, inside and out. He's like a dog and will lean into the rub! His nose is the same, infact I often grab his nose and just rub and pinch (softly!!!) his nostrils. He's always been mouthy and I've never had a problem there.

That's rubbing it in, all right! :) I'm happy if Buster gets wormed at all, and I'm always waiting for the return of powdered/pelleted ivermectin.

You haven't followed my adventure with him have you :)

We couldn't TOUCH behind shoulder three months ago let alone even THINK about touching his hind legs or tail

Nice!

Fred's not too bad to worm, only has problems with syringes when he gets bute for a period of time (he needs it in paste form or he won't eat it). He won't accept treats from me afterwards, though. Everything is suspect after I've given him something icky.

Cheyenne's pretty good too, usually doesn't care. She'll take treats right afterwards.

I wonder if they would do it without halters, but I'd have to figure out where to put my hand! I usually use the cheek piece to hold onto while I put a finger into the mouth before putting the syringe in with the other hand. There'd be nothing to steady my first hand with.... :headscratch:

*raises hand* Mine has always been that way. She loves wormer of any kind. Not sure why! After I give it to her she's always looking for more..go figgure. She follows me trying to take the tube from my hand. When I come out with it she comes right up. Maybe it's because she gets an apple everytime immediately afterwards..lol Fly spray she doesn't bat an eye at. I even use the roll on kind around her eyes. I can pick her feet as well with no halter. Pretty much can do anything I want. Now if anyone else tries anything they can't. They can't even catch her. And if they walk up to her with a halter in hand...forget it. She's outta there. If I walk up with a halter..head lowers and she slips her nose right through the hole and waits for me to buckle it.
