As the title states, which Animalintex for an abscess?

Is it the poultice pad (which states one of the uses is for abscesses) or the hoof pad?

And, while on the subject of abscesses, which cohesive tape do you use, 2", 3" or 4"?

As you can probably tell, I am dealing with an abscess and don't have anything in stock. I am using the diapers and green epsom salt gel, but it's not the best fit on a drafty type hoof.

Thanks!

For Pandora I used Icthamol (sp) which the vet gave me. I packed that in there first. Then put a diaper on top of that, 4" vetwrap around that, and then wrapped all of that with duct tape. I did this twice a day, and also soaked her foot in epsom salt twice a day.
After the first 3 or 4 days, I just put the vetwrap and duct tape over the icthamol, because she was doing well enough not to need the diaper.

Good luck!! :)

I've got to go check in the barn which anima lintex I used for what we thought was an abcess...

also a good mixture you can make on your own lather the sole with icthammol in a container mix about a handful of wheat bran, Epsom salt and iodine then pack that on top of the icthammol - wrap with diaper and vet wrap (I also use tape - 4")

My former farrier, who I really respected (but we moved so I can't use him now), said Cornell was finding that soaking a hoof in Murphy's Oil Soap softened it to make the abscess pop. It worked for Buckpoco...he always had an abscess.

Thanks for the replies!

Found out my local tack store doesn't carry the Animalintex anyway; by the time I receive an order bought online, I am hoping that the horse doesn't need it anyway. So, sticking with the MG60/diaper routine.

Farrier is out of town, so will have to be the vet if it doesn't blow out by Friday.

If you are simply looking to help the abscess travel around, leaving a hole within the hoof to find it's way out soak it in hot water an epsom salt. This will soften the hoof and help the abscess to run it's course.

If you want to have the least amount of damage get a professional out to assess it and possibly open the pocket up to relieve the pressure and cease more damage to the hoof.

I do like the 3M poultice pads, but they can be hard to find. You just put them in hot water and slap them on the sole and wrap.

I don't see any sense using ichthamol or other medications if there is no opening.

About to go outside to soak and wrap, but I will bring the camera. There is an area that always stays open 365 d/y; always makes me hopeful that he won't gravel, but those big feet just seem to want to. Farrier is at a funeral - he is a nice guy, but my husband, who holds the horses, doesn't like him. I am having a new farrier come out, but he can't make it before the vet tomorrow. Sunday to Friday is long enough, time to try to find it.

Walking better again, unfortunately, has to be on the move.

Foot hosed off before soaking, you can see the "open toe," which is alwasys watched for seedy toe.

Vet came out yesterday, left a message on the cell.

The boy was really sore, so had to block the foot to start digging out.
$$$
Abscess was in the quarter, so had travelled. Some discharge.
Keep up w/ iodine and magna paste until Mon or Tues, keep up with the bute.
Left me some magna paste (which I already had).
$$$
If he is still off by Monday, give him a call & he will come out to dig out some more.
$$$

Heard a lot of $$$.

Horse is still sore this morning, probably from all the digging around, hopefully not because of anything else. Poor guy.

Have some expensive tincture of iodine, use this or povidine?

If it travelled from his toe to his heel, it's probably under his entire sole on that side, maybe both sides.

What does the vet, or farrier, say about that perpetual hole in his toe?

If you are mostly worried about the $$$ you are in the wrong hobby.:cowboy:

"If you are mostly worried about the $$$ you are in the wrong hobby."
Preaching to the choir baby. Isn't that the truth.

Just paid last week's bill of $595 bill for their summer shots & dentals. Happy enough to make the vet's boat payment for the month, but wasn't really counting on paying the dock fees as well.

Tiz, nobody says anything. I usually have my husband holding the horse for vets & farriers. I will ask my vet if I have to have him out next week. Tofana is still sore today and there wasn't much drainage on the cotton. He is rocking that foot as he walks, so it is definitely sore where the vet was digging.

Farrier is being switched. The one that is coming out likes to analyze a bit, will bring it up as a question.

Why didn't I ask before? Because every time I thought about it, it was after they came out. I am so used to seedy toe with the thoroughbreds that I just kept thinking that it would fill, but it has been, at a minimum, a year.

I've had more than a few abscess with the pony and always have had great success using basic epsom salt in the bottom of an adult diaper duct taped to his hoof. Change it once a day and the abscess generally blows pretty quickly. That's the method everyone at our barn uses and our vet taught us.

Good luck!

Nice to see you back Cheval!

Usually I do something similar, just use magna paste instead of epsom (it's an epsom paste/gel). However, this time it's pretty deep and not ready to come out.

Just got the bill for the last visit, $186, charged $50 for the cohesion tape & magna paste-why didn't he just use mine? Will have him out tomorrow to take digital x-rays to make sure we are dealing only with an abscess and not something else.

Poor little bunny.

Solon had one move around his hoof for almost two weeks. It was horrible trying to get that thing to come out! Hope the pony is feeling better!
