View Full Version : Keeping tails out of the mud

I need some ideas for keeping my boys tail out of the mud. Where he is pastured he has brush that he continually goes tromping through. I am pretty sure this is where it is getting caught and taken out. I have braided his tail and done it up with the vetwrap, I have stuck it in a tail bag. Nothing stays in! I do it up at night and by the morning I find it laying on the ground somewhere! His tail is so nice right now and I know in no time it is going to be awful from the mud. And there is nothing I can do to keep him out of the mud! Any ideas that you think would stay put in his tail?? Am I not doing it right or what??
Thanks!

I use a tail bag that braids into the tail, it stays in until I take it out. I've also seen people but a tail bag in and then wrap vetwrap around the top to keep it on.

I haven't tried the tail bags that you braid in, guess I will have to order one and try it out! Thanks Vegashorselady!

I use a lycra braid in tail bag covered with a camo canvas sleeve that I made myself. It's got a gather at the top with string around it to keep the entire tail (with tailbag) clean and it's tough tough tough. You could also make one out of blue jean material. The camo tail bag is just like all the other pouch type bags and it's easy, you just make it inside out then flip it right side in when you are done sewing up the edges!! (Reinforced a lot for the outside ones)

I just use lots of Cowboy magic @ the ends and just brush out the mud or it rinses out in the next rainstorm. The mud is crazy here as well. It's really funny when the snow attaches in balls on the ends.

How do they stay on? I have the problem of brush in the field and he thinks he is a brush hog so I believe that is how they get taken out! LoL

The top of the bag has 2 ties that I feed thru the braid in the tail. I then cover the tie with vet wrap. The log tail bags she rips right out no matter what I do to them and since this one sits the tail and bag much higher up I haven't had any issues.
This short video shows it in her tail - sorry I don't have any still shots LOL

I don't but I'll take one tomorrow. I also use polar fleece outside sleeves since my horses aren't that hard on them. (I love my polar fleece tail bags!! They are soooo easy to make!)

Whatever bag or item you use for your horses tail you choose, remember to take it down at least once a week if not more. Let the tail breath, dry then re-wrap with dry material.
Any moisture trapped in will cause rot and the horse will lose his tail.

Thank you for the reminder! No worries though I take them out at least once a week and let the tail air dry and breathe while he is stalled and eating for at least a couple of hrs! Thanks again!!

Ok, vegashorselady! I have one of the braid in tail bags and what a pain in the hiney!!
I really need some:help:! How do you get the tail in it! LoL
I finally got it in but I am sure it took so much more time then it should have!
Thanks!

I generally feed it through and grab it with my fingers from the bottom. Kinda like putting on panty hose. On my shorter tailed horse I can just put it in from the top but it's kind of an acquired skill. It gets easier and easier I promise!

the trick that i have learned is braid each section then feed it through, once all the was in then unbraid the section. it is the only way i can get Dusty's tail in them but once in they dont come out till i take it out.
