As the toll mounts in serial stabbings in three states, a forensic psychiatrist said the frenetic pace of the suspect suggests the attacks aren't likely to slow down.
"It's more likely that he will ramp up until he is caught," said Dr. Mark Fettman, medical director at Ohio's high-security forensic psychiatry center in Columbus, who previously worked at Michigan's Center for Forensic Psychiatry near Ypsilanti.
Saturday's early morning stabbing of a man near Flint's McLaren Regional Medical Center hasn't been ruled out as a possible 21st victim of the attacker. The death toll stands at five, all Flint-area men.The timing of the incident after 2 a.m. would indicate the alleged killer of five was on an ambitious travel schedule because police believe the man is responsible for a stabbing later the same day -- at 7:45 p.m. Saturday in Toledo, Ohio. He is suspected of three attacks last week in Leesburg, Va., and at least 16 in the Flint area since May 24.
"It may have become an uncontrollable thrill," Fettman said. "It may be something sexual from power, control, sadism. It may be a desire to be caught, even if it is an unconscious desire."
All but three of the men attacked have been African-American. The suspect has been described as a muscular white man in his late 20s or early 30s, standing 5-foot-11 to 6-foot-2.
Little too close for comfort for me...
