Facebook launched Facebook Places yesterday. Anyone can find out where you are when you are logged in. It gives the actual address & map location of where you are as you use Facebook. Make sure your kids know. TO UNDO: go to"Account", "Account Settings", "Notifications", then scroll down to "Places" and uncheck the 2 boxes. Make sure to SAVE changes and re-post this!!
FYI for all!!:)

Good lord, why would they do that? I've really about had it with Facebook and their lack of any interest, let alone protection of our privacy.

WOW! I don't go on those sites, this is one reason why. I don't trust them, the safety/protection or the people that want to get that info from a site. I still mainly use the telephone to communicate  I'm so old fashioned :p

People can only tell where you are when you "check in". You have to physically go to the app, press Check In and then verify. It will not give anyone your location unless you do this and it does not track you, simply logs your location that you check in at. As with anything on the Internet, you should obviously take caution and be smart about using it. I've been using it for 2 weeks now with no issues. I never put whether I'm alone or what I'm actually doing or anything specific.

So stupid I have no idea why they would do that. I did mine first thing yesterday after my cousin called me up.

yes..you have to go to a thing and hit check in...on my iPhone it's a whole 'nother button..then you have to select your place, then once you click on that, you have to hit a check in button. So it's, at minimum, 3 clicks to check in...not something you can do accidentally..lol

What outriding said :)
& unchecking those boxes is just prohibiting facebook to email you regarding that application, it's not disabling it.

How do you know it's not disabling it?

Looks like you actually need to go to a different spot to turn off the places thing:
http://www.facebook.com/settings/?tab=privacy#!/settings/?tab=privacy§ion=custom&h=5b28e834743439b274987c1f8f05cb9c
Then:
Click 'customize settings' and go down to the bottom 2 where you can choose what grouping you want people for the 'places I check in' and then you can disable 'People Here Now' so they can't see the location. Either way, this is ridiculous for Facebook to even offer it up.

I think it is important to know what you are signing up for.. BUT...
I think that people forget that if you are just friends with people you know and only YOUR friends can see your status then your good.
Just my OP
This only turns off the notifications. It doesn't actually turn off places.
Cheval got it. Thanks! :)

It will not give anyone your location unless you do this and it does not track you,
The IP address tracks you whether you want it to or not....It's NOT for facebook to post to everyone.
