I could have strangled Duke last night! He did nothing but cry ALL NIGHT LONG! I kid you not. I took him out just before midnight, just after 1am, just after 2am I put him back out with the big dogs. At 5 am I brought them back in cause TJ decided he needed to start barking at nothing. At 6:30am checked on Duke again to find that he had pooped all over the crate and himself. GRRR! He held it in all the time outside!
So he got a bath. And he wasn't impressed.

He's so cute though! I love Puppy but I can't say I miss those Puppy days. She still rips stuff up but she's pretty housebroken. Do you have a travel carrier? If you do just maybe try for one night to see if he'll sleep in there better. I think I told you I had an open crate for Puppy and she screamed non stop trying to get out of it,I thought she was going to rip her paws open so I took her out. I think it brought back memories of pet stores and the rescue. Once I put her in the travel crate she was fine. She will still bark if she smells a skunk or something but usually she curls right up and goes to sleep in it. I'll say that and she'll have me up all night tonight.
She was horrible to housebreak, I'd have her out for an hr and come in and go on the floor, I think again her background confused her. She was used to going in the crate or cage or what ever they kept her in so she thought that was what she was supposed to do. I know the rescue had crates like we had and don't use now. She is still in that carrier, it should be bigger, we bought a bigger one, she wants no part of it. She curls into a little ball and is happy in what she likes. The other thing our Dog trainer told us to do when she barks if in the crate is cover it with a blanket, just leave a little place for her to see out of but that calms her down too especially during a thunder storm. I cover the whole thing in the front and sides, she can still see out the little holes in the back of she wants to.
Good luck, I love Puppies but they are a ton of work, she exhausted me last yr. She is still high maintenance but not like before. He'll grow out of it too but between now and then it's exhausting. It's a good thing we love them.

He's been fine in the open crate all week, it was just last night. Usually he cries for about 10 minutes and then he's done but not last night. I tossed a blanket over the crate so only the front is open. If he were to do what Puppy did, get used to a small carrier and not want to up grade then he'll get to the point where only his head fit! hahaha!
Hey Grunge! You see that long white hair? That's actually attached to him! I felt so bad when I grabbed it to pull it off him and it was attached!

That's true about the carrier!!! We were lucky she didn't grow alot, she grew but she still fits just doesn't look as comfortable. I think she was 10 lbs when we got her and she's 17 now. I wish she'd go in the bigger crate but she won't, she doesn't even want to go in it when I throw treats or her ball in there. She hates change I guess!

Awww the poor little guy. I'm not sure what you may think of this.... but, have you thought of trying to keep him in a section of the kitchen or somewhere, like in a puppy playpen or using a gate? I have to say I am not a fan of crates..... never used them. Well, I did try it once when I got my Cavalier puppy, he freaked out in it and cried so much..... I am not sure if he was claustrophobic or what. Anyway..... my parents and I always just gated our puppies off in the kitchen, and basically paper-trained them, and also taught them to potty outside, worked every time for us. I know the thing these days is to use crates..... but honestly, I hate them. Some puppies/dogs simply cannot always hold it..... my Poodle could, but my Spaniel could not and he was more difficult to housetrain. Also, your puppy is really very young..... he is only 2 months?

He is only 2 months and is really doing great for his age, just irritated after 2 nights of little to no sleep. I'm not really mad at him.
I used this crate on the old man and he was only a couple months older then Duke. Plus the shelter I got him from had him in a crate so it's not new to him, just a new crate. I'm sure he'll be fine. I was also thinking that I was gone most of yesterday, that's the only thing that we did differently then the other days when he did fine. So I think he was just a little scared from being alone most of the day. Or not... Don't know. We'll see.

4:13 am and why am I awake? Cause Duke is a GOOD Boy! When I put him to bed tonight he started crying and carrying on and I told him to stop and he did! Then when I got up to let him out at 2 he was asleep so I left him sleeping and set the alarm for 4. Then when I got up at 4 he looked asleep at first and I was going to leave him sleep again and come back at 6 but then he heard me and looked up so I took him out. And the good boy went potty without any problems! So now I am sitting on the couch with him giving him a little middle of the night treat (spending time with him and not putting him right back to bed treat).
Good Boy Duke!

Sounds like maybe he was just scared and worried about being alone and in a new home... I bet every day he will get better.... sounds as tho he is already settling in, that's great, he sure is adorable! Good that he was already used to a crate.... I don't think Bentley was when I tried the crate with him, and I was not comfortable with it either, so it didn't work for us. Duke sounds like he is doing super-good for a young boy!

That's great that he did so well for you! I think crate training is good for all dogs. And it's usually easier to start at a very young age. If they ever need surgery in the future, it's good that they be crate trained so they're easier to care for post-op. They need the confinement post-op so they don't stress the areas that were operated on while they heal. There are a lot of good reasons to crate train but that's the main one I can think of off the top of my head now (other than it making house training easier). That may have something to do with the fact that, that's what I do for a living (working in a surgical practice)! :D
My Kota's crate trained. He slept in a medium sized carrier from the time I adopted him until he couldn't fit in it any more. He now has one of those XL wire kennels that he sleeps in. He has more than enough room (I think a large would've been sufficient for him but I didn't know how big he was going to get). I think he likes it. He goes in there every night about 9:30 because he knows when bedtime is. :)

I think it's a good thing for dogs too Peace. Whether it's a crage or a carrier or whatever. I bought a XL or XXL (don't remember now but it's BIG!) for the old man cause I knew he'd be big too. The pet shop I got it from had ordered it for someone with a Great Dane and they never picked it up. I was such a good customer there and was always in so I got it for just 10% above his cost! I stole it!!! hahaha!
I did go back into the Good Will here to see if the smaller crate was still there to start Duke in but is wasn't. But it wont hurt him to be in this one. The old man was just a couple months older then Duke when I got it for him and he loved his 'room' till he was old enough to not need it anymore (house trained and no longer teething).

Need some suggestions. I've noticed that if I go outside with Duke he will go potty with little to no problem. But if I just let him out by himself or with just the big dogs he wont go! He holds it and goes in the house! Does he think I have to be with him? It's not that he's uncomfortable in the yard it's that he just starts playing and wont stop to go! I've even tried leaving him out for an hour or so but he holds it. I can't go out with him every time, he needs to learn to go on his own.
But on a plus note, he is doing very well overnight. No more messes in the crate. I have my alarm set for 3am to let him out and if he needs out sooner he wakes me up. All week he's only needed to go out once a night and then holds it till we let him out in the morning. And TJ is starting to play with him! Big dog has some wicked teeth doesn't he! Feel sorry for anyone that tries to break into our house!!!
But the bad news is that the old man is now having seizures a couple times a day and he's mostly gone mentally now. I think this picture will be one of the last ones I get of him. I can take all I want but when I look at him I can see he's not there and I don't want to remember that. He's all there in this one. I'm going to call some vets today and start checking things out. My plan is to take him to my parents beginning of Oct for one last road trip just us like we used to do and have his old vet there put him down. But he may not be able to make that trip with me so I need to be prepared.

Have you tried letting him out without the other dogs? That might help. I've never really had that problem with Kota. I took him out on a leash for a long time, til I felt comfortable enough letting him out without one. He listens pretty well so I hardly ever take him out on a leash. I just open the door and out he goes.
Sorry to hear about your old man. :( Have they got him on anything for the seizures?

My dogs were all that way as pups. Play play play with meeeeee, so I would go out after a bit and tell all the dogs to go potty, and get which ever was the pups attention and tell them no play, go potty. After awhile it works, for me.
When Gizzy is home, Tex is a NUT. Tex chases Giz, so I hold Tex back until Giz gets set peeing, let Tex go, and then Tex ignores Giz and goes potty.
In time your puppy issues will go away.
Great job on the over night issues!!!

How is your older dog? I sure hope he is doing better and not having seizures......is he on meds for it?
I find that starting pups at an older age is a bit easier, I like the puppies to stay with the mom longer to learn socialization, etc. But that is just my personal preference.

I don't have him on meds for the seizures, he just started having them and they are actually slowing down. He's only had 1 today and that is way less. I talked to the vets here and they actually want $280 to put him down and do a mass cremation. I could see that amount if I was keeping his ashes and they had to do a private one but dang! So I have some money to save up in order to take care of my boy.
I hate having to choose between getting him some seizure medicine and saving money to put him down. Life sucks right now... :(

You are a great Mom. Seriously! I can't do puppies. I've been there and I just can't do it! They are adorable but I'll take a full grown dog any day over a puppy! I'm so sorry about your older dog. He reminds me of my old girl Sable (only she's black) life is never easy.

So just 2 1/2 weeks ago (at 8 weeks old) Duke weighed in at 10lbs and now today he is 17lbs! Before picking him up I had bought him a small and a med collar and the small was too big so I had to adj the med down as small as it goes and tie a knot in it (knot in the small was to tight) and it was still a little big. Now he is in the small collar and the med is put away for a couple of months. Or less...

Duke made it all night without waking me up! I'm sure tonight he'll make up for it by waking me up twice but still. For not quite 11 weeks old to sleep through the night and hold it that is major!

Duke is now making it all through the night so long as he is not put to bed before 10:30 but he is more then ready to go out come morning.
