View Full Version : AH! It's happened to me too! And I don't know what to do.

Well it seems we have had a puppy dropped off on us. :( He's small, maybe like 3 months old or older? I don't know, I"m not good with this sort of thing. He hasn't been neutered though. He looks well taken care of, but he has no collar. It's cold outside, and I feel bad saying it, but I can't let him in the house because we have a dog who is aggressive towards other dogs and I have two small kids that I can't put him in the house to run.

AH!! I don't know what to do! I have called all the neighbors, most of which are working, but the few I have gotten a hold of aren't missing a puppy and don't know of anyone that has one matching his description.

What do I do? I put a bowl of dog food out there and a bowl of water and he's eating that up.

We live really small town so we don't have a humane society, etc. Do I call the police?

Id try the county first, see if they know of a place that will help you.
Try your vet, they may know who you can contact for help.
Good luck. I sure hope hes lost and not dumped.

I'd do what Vicky suggested.
Also, about bringing him inside, is there anyway he could stay in a crate? Didn't know if that'd help you any or not.

If we had a crate that would be a great idea. :( But our dog we have is older and he has the whole laundry room gated off for him as "his space" so we don't have a crate. I called my Mother in law and I'm hoping that she'll get back to me soon. Maybe she can hang on to him for a bit to see if anyone calls us about it.
Here's a picture. It breaks my heart if he got dumped. But I KNOW hubby will NOT let us keep him. :(

Aww he's cute. Do you have a horse trailer at home? I've put dogs in there with a bit of hay to keep let them snuggle down in (old hay) and they stayed warm. Our puppy isn't potty trained yet so she sometimes sleeps out there. . .it's like a big kennel. Just an idea. Hopefully you have an animal control out there. We don't and that's the problem.

He's so cute, I hope if he doesn't have a home he'll find one. I know your problem because my Noah is dog aggressive, I have wanted to get a friend for him but he doesn't like other dogs so I had to forget that idea. If we did have a puppy dumped off I'd probably try to keep it in the barn if Noah really hated it but I don't know if that would work either since I like to keep my animals in the house. I would like to really hurt someone who would dump off an animal.

No horse trailer. :( If he's stil here at nap time I will go out and get a bale of straw and put it in the barn for him with food and water. He's on his 2nd bowl of food. :(

I talked to one neighbor who is such a dog lover that she is calling everyone that I can't think of that might have lost him. I told her I didn't know what else to do since I couldn't bring him in, etc. and she said we should just wait and see if anyone calls us back before I call anyone else? I really don't think he's anyones though. I will call the vet and see what they say about who I could call later on if no one calls me back.

Awww, hes cute. Wonder what breed he is. Lab/Pit?? Hard to tell.
I hope either his people are looking for him and find him, or that you can find him a home, or a shelter to go to.

Maybe you can put him in the garage or the barn, on an old rug or some hay or straw? Or, well, just put down an old rug out there and maybe he will be OK...altho I see there is sleet and freezing rain moving in for today so it is going to be very nasty out there. Maybe your vet's office will have some ideas.....if nothing else, would the Chippewa County Humane Association take him? In case you don't have a humane association up there? At least the poor thing has food and water, that will help him a lot! He is lucky he found you!

Here is their website with phone number and info....

Yay! Well good news of sorts. The neighbor lady down the other way returned my call. He's not theirs, but she stopped over to see if she recognized him. She doesn't but she said if I haven't heard anything from anyone by 1 pm. when she's done with her work then she'll stop back over and pick him up and take him home.

I called the vet and she just said to call the local policeman, so if this doesn't work out that's our next step.

Mary, our neighbor is a BIG dog lover so I know he'll be okay there if they keep him or if they just keep him until someone claims him.

I was worried about the weather too that is supposed to start snowing/raining today, so I'm glad we'll figure it out.

Right now though he's starting to bark at the horses. :( So I have to keep my eye on him, if he starts going after them I will have to lock him in the garage.

Oh and he does look like a cross of a lab and pitt or something. He has ears like a pit.

That's great your neighbor will take him, I hope someone just didn't dump him off.....I hate to think of people doing that, especially at this time of the year. At least he will be OK now tho.

He doesn't look malnourished so maybe someone will claim him. I hope so. If not, I hope your neighbors keep him. It's getting too cold out for a short-haired dog!:(

Well he is just the sweetest thing. I went out to check the horses and he followed me down the sidewalk. I told him "no" not to come with me any further and he listened.. so he's definitely from somewhere!!!

I opened up the side door of the garage and went in there with him so hopefully if he gets cold he'll go in there. We have the wood stove in there so it's rather toasty. He also has a blanket outside by his dishes and a toy. I'm a sucker, but he's so adorable.

How can anyone dump a dog or puppy this time of year, espeically with SNOW/Rain forecasted for the entire week.

If you can't keep him even for the short term, go drop him off at her house. She'll do right by him if she has to. :innocent: I know, I'm one of those people.

I wouldn't automatically blame people. Our Homer is a runner. If he's left alone and gets stressed he runs. He's gone through fences, he's pushed the screens out when we left him inside.... and when he goes, he runs miles. I'm sure that's how we ended up with him in the first place. He's a basket case, bless his heart.

But does he have tags? This dog has no tags. If your dog is a runner it should have tags so it doesn't end up at the pound and if he runs to far the people that find him can call and tell you where he is.

WashingtonBay

Yeah Homer has tags, that's how we've found him in the past, he shows up at someone's door miles away... - but they can slip out of collars. As sweet as he is, someone has loved him, I wouldn't assume they dumped him, it might be as much his fault as theirs that he is lost, is all.

True. Hopefully my neighbor comes to get him here by 1 or so and at least he'll be taken care of. And we are a pretty small block of people so if someone calls one of us to see if we found a dog, they'll pass them on to me, and I'll tell them to go to my neighbors.

Yeah - sounds like you've got it solved and he'll be OK with the neighbor lady taking him on, whatever happens. :)

Well she just came to pick him up. I had to put him in her truck since he was a little scared..but he wasn't aggressive at all. She is going to call the sherrif and see if anyone reported him missing, but says he'll be one of hers for now.

Seems like she's done this before, so at least she is better prepared than I am.

Good job looking out for him:clap:. We like to say how bad people are, but there's plenty of good!

Someone's got to look out for the little things, or he'll end up dead in the road.... or freezing with bad weather coming. You've done good today :)

Thanks guys. I was worried about him running in the road, but thankfully he stayed around. And now I won't have to worry about him anymore. My dog is happy that he can now go outside. :) I let him out earlier, but it didn't go well, so he went back in.
