just an update, been a long bad day. went out to the barn today for the shoer, Dreamer got kicked in the head by another horse with shoes on. cracked his skull and has 2 bone chips right above his left eye, to the upper left of his eye and below his ear if that makes sense. please pray for him.

he is on a steroid for the swelling, bute for the pain, and a antibiotic, they also boostered his tetnus as a precaution. have to cold hose min. of 4 times a day. Theres too much swelling to do anything now. She said if the chips bother him after he starts healing then he may have to get them removed at a later date. he was tripping over his own feet this morning, real loss of coordination( praying its not his brain) she said they have alot of nerves that run through where he got kicked and that might have something to do with it. Its basically a waiting period. she said the first 24-48 hours is the period of time for concern, if his brain is going to swell it will be within that time frame. cold hosed him for about an hour and a half straight today and it took ALOT of the swelling down. im thinking of figuring out a way to rig up a cold bandage, like freezing wet wash cloths or something, ice cubes would hurt im sure.

I'm praying for you. You all have been through so much. Watch out for frostbite if you atttach ice to him although where you're at it would probably melt before that could happen. You better hold off on your move for a few weeks til he's better. Good Luck.

They make some flexible freeze gel pouches (I know I am not explaining it correctlyt) and also the sheets of closed cubes you can freeze and stay flexible that would work great to help.

Keep us posted and I know how hard that can be.

How is Dreamer doing today? What did the vet say about recovery, etc.? Hope the vet has him on some good meds.

Cripes, I can't believe that the barn owner has horses in the pasture with shoes on, with other horses...... not safe at all! When I boarded they made the horse owners pull the back shoes if they wanted their horse out with other horses.

Is Dreamer able to stand up and move OK?

I'm So sorry!

I am praying for a speedy full recovery.
If it's any consolation, a friend's horse had a head on collision with an apple tree at a full gallop several years back, fractured his skull needed over 100 stitches. He made a full recovery, has no side effect in terms of brain damage. He is slightly deformed in the face but nothing else. With a mom like you, I have a lot of faith Dreamer will make a full recovery.

A suggestion for the icing. You can pick up gel ice packs at most dept/pharmacies. Use tape or the adhesive velcro you can get at a craft store, using his fly mask, Velcro some fabric to the inside and outside of the mask where you need to ice, then make a pouch on the outside of the mask with either sewing or velcroing so that you can remove and replace the gel packs, easily.
be sure to pick up the gel packs that you can reuse. When Vicor busted his knee, the gel packs were a life saver to using the hose all the time.

Best of luck. Dreamer has a huge fan club praying for him.

You and dreamer are in our prayers.
another trick is to mix 1 part alcohol to 2 parts water in a freezer ziploc bag. (double bag it with the seam at opposite ends.) and freeze it . It makes a nice mold-able ice pack

Vet has been back out He was swelling alot more. Hes also getting a steroid((shot)) for the swelling for the next 3-5 days. this afternoon it was down quite a bit which is GREAT. he is no longer tripping over his own feet either also GREAT. today i was able to put a halter on him VERY loosely ( more like on his neck). He will let me touch it but not very much. hes been down in the dumps not walking around a whole lot and you can see in his eyes he is hurting but is doing better than yesterday.

Keep up the good work! Sounds like he's really improving. Even with the swelling down, keep up the cold hosing. Those gel ice packs are great to strap on with vet wrap. If you cant do that, try to find crushed ice. I know some sonic stores sell theirs in bags. Conforms well to different body parts and doesn't poke like cubes do.
I've delt with a few of these, most required surgery to fix the fractures (actually more like fully shattered). Hopefully his will heal on it's own, might just not be very pretty. Keep up the antibiotics, NSAIDS, and dex.
Keep us posted! So sorry this has happened. These horrible fluke accidents are so heartbreaking. It's scary. Recently treated an esophegeal rupture that was caused by being kicked by another horse. So scary, and very glad none of our horses have shoes!

He swelling is down MORE than yesterday, today was the last day of his steriod shots. He started belly acheing from the bute so he has been switched to asprin bolus. he is starting to feel better cause the turd is fight back with the penicillin shots. Anyone know how HARD it is to give a horse a penicillin shot when you cant halter them. HA. what a turd.

WashingtonBay
09-13-2010, 02:59 PM
Well, I'm glad he's chipper enough to be a pain about the shots. Good news. What a scary setback.

I hope this is the start of you getting back on track with where you want to be.

Oh I feel your pain!!!! Luckly we have stocks, so we usually use them. Where is the fracture located? I'm assuming somewhere on the bridge of the nose if you can't use a halter. How about using a bridle? Just a headstall and a bit. Then you can control him with the bit pressure instead of nose pressure.
Hope he keeps improving.
