I've always admired people who understand angles on a horse. I've never done it before, but I decided to give it a shot.

B isn't standing as square, I know. Her front legs are well tucked under her.

How did I do with my angles?

Not bad! It's hard to see now with the lines on it, but I think you might have given your old TB mare a little more closed hip than she really has. I think her stifle is a little lower. 4 inches or so down in your picture.

:)

How do I find the point of hip? I know how to find it when I'm standing but not when I'm looking at a picture.

It can be a little tricky in some pictures. It will usually be a few inches behind the point where the 'hair swirl' of the loin comes up.

Now that I look again :o... I can see how off you were there.... I put where I think they really are under my blue dots. That will change some of your angles quite a bit.

Are these closer?

My mare and my gelding both have completely different angles and body types. Does this mean that he has more of a closed shoulder joint than she? I never properly understood the term "open" and "closed" until now. My gelding definitely has a more symmetrical profile than my mare, in terms of angles and joints anyway.

I think I have a lot more envy for people who can pick these things out now. This is tedious. :(

He appears to have a much more balanced conformation= using only that criteria, though your lines in the front on him are still a little off.

And I say appears, because in the pic she is angling away, and she is rotated at the hip with her toe pointing toward the camera. Even if she's only angled away a little, it will exaggerate those proportions and make her rear end look smaller and those bones shorter. So while it's interesting, I wouldn't depend on that pic... I'm not sure her shoulder is really that straight either.

I've been really wanting some for a while now. I know his overall conformation is much more even and balanced than hers.

She's much longer than him in every direction with the typical TB long upright pasterns and giraffe neck. He has a compact body with shorter, 45 degree pasterns and a more equally proportioned body.

Her shoulder's definitely more sloping than that. Oops!

I don't know anything about angles, but I can take some nice conformation pictures of my mare for you to practice on if you like.
