I know someone who does this, doesn't bother to take the wrapper off. I think she's asking for trouble. Any thoughts?

I would think that it would get impacted personally. I feed peppermints but mine aren't in the wrapper.

Yes. I think she's off her rocker. But I have a trash eating horse that has never had any problems. . . She's pooped silk flowers before (after we bought hay from a place next to a cemetary), cookie wrappers, anything she could get her mouth on she used to eat. ..

It's probably not the worst thing you could do.... the wrappers are pretty small, but it makes zero sense to do it on purpose.

It is pretty nuts. Maybe she's just too lazy to take them off. Or maybe she thinks they're like those rice candy wrappers that melt in your mouth.

I'd never do it, with my luck they'd get impacted or choke. Mine don't like peppermints anyway, I gave Delta a peppermint horse treat one day and she acted like I gave her poison. The boys won't eat peppermint either, Mrs Pastures cookies are their very favorite treat and you can't trick them with cheaper ones they won't touch them!

I think that's a very foolish thing to do!

Why take the chance of something going wrong in the intestinal tract? I mean it is not like it is a tough thing to do, unwrap a little candy.

I have way to much invested in my horse to take a chance like that. Abby get a candy cane for Christmas, but the wrapper goes in the trash.

It's probably not enough to hurt the horses, but why would you not take the wrapper off? That's just stupid and risky. I give my horses peppermints but I certainly take the plastic off first!

I dont think one or two would hurt it, but over time yes I think it would have an impact. I know someone at my barn who gives her horse a couple pepermints during her ride every time she rides, but she takes off the wrapper...but giving them that frequently with the wrapper cant be good. I also have the question why be too lazy to just take the wrapper off? I try to avoid vet bills when I can haha

What everyone else said. Feeding an indigestible object (the wrapper) simply because one is sure it will pass is very foolish.

She's pooped silk flowers before . ..Quite likely the first time those words were ever put together in this combination :hysterical:

My Labrador pooped an entire baby diaper once.

I was so disgusted with the thought of him, I might have shot him where he stood... I still didn't want him eating another one just because he proved he could. ;)

I dont eat them with the wrapper on, why would I let my horse do it?

Sounds weird to me

It was a guest-baby :p... and guest-mom had put the dirty diaper in the bathroom wastepaper basket, as I recall.

It was some pretty (and surprising) poop. Luckily Miss Sonora outgrew that habit! lol

Thank goodness he didn't die. A guest at our house did that once and the dog dug it out of the trash. We had no idea it was in there. I was pretty mad at the guest. Take that kind of thing home with you and dispose of it there.

Well Fiddler ate an entire walmart plastic sack once, and passed it. Yes, I found a pile of poop in the pasture with a walmart sack. We got lucky. But if there is one thing I have learned about a horse's intestinal tract... it will always find a way to mess up. All it would take is one of those little wrappers to get caught up in one of those loops and turns. Nothing really to panic about if your horse accidentaly eats something like that, but like WB said, to purposfully feed that to your horse is pure stupidity!

Well here' s what I know.

Horse cost of surgery to flip gut back into place: $7000
Dog cost of surgery to remove eatenrock that WON'T pass $400... did it 4 times so $1600
Dog cost of a bout of pancreatitis after getting into garbage $500 ..how that mini doxie got into the tall garbage can is a mystery.

I would never feed an animal anything that is not meant to be eaten. Fact is they can all get into things on their own without our helping them along!!!

After Christmas I wait til the candy canes go on sale at 75% to 90% off & buy the store out.
I take the wrappers off but sometimes pieces stick to it. Dusty has always been ok. Once one of our cows grabbed 2 right out of my hand ate both with the wrapper. She was ok. Candy canes are alot cheaper & all the animals at my house like them better than horse treats.

My son ate a bunch of crayons when he was little. He had multi color poop.

My dog used to do that on a regular basis if she had the opportunity.
