OK...this may not seem like much of an accomplishment, because she does ride in gymkhanas, but I only allow her to lope on the way "home".

After going to the Clinton Anderson clinic she picked up on some good information and wanted to try some things with Ladybird. So last night she was riding in the arena.

A little background...Ladybird is older and can take advantage of the kids sometimes...usually when they ride her around the arena she always stops back at the gate....the kids have had a hard time keeping her moving. I have tried to coach them and tell them to ask first, then "make" Ladybird keep moving, of course they get upset with me.

So last night, Cheyenne asked if she could lope Ladybird around the arena. I told her fine, BUT she had to keep her loping around the ENTIRE arena and NOT stop at the gate. If she was going to stop at all, she needed to stop at the other end of the arena. Well, she got her in a trot and went all the way around without stopping, then got Ladybird into a lope and again went all the way around the arena and even got Ladybird pulled away from the gate when she came around! Woohoo!!! She was so excited and I was proud of her! :cowboy:

Later on while I was working with Dallas she said she wanted to ride him.... well, I did let her get on him and led him around the arena. He did pretty good, Cheyenne was confident, but I was a nervous wreck. I kept telling her, to be prepared for anything and her response...."If anything happens at least I will learn how to fall off" :p She's such a smarta*%@!

Good for her. At least one thing in her favor, she is apparently not afraid to fall off.

Ladybird is a GREAT horse! That is "why" she gets away with so much with the kids...LOL

But, I also told the kids early on that she will only go as fast as she thinks they can handle. She wouldn't lope with Cheyenne for a long time no matter how hard Cheyenne tried. I kept telling her that Ladybird KNEW she wasn't ready to stay on. She would lope with Nico, but not Chy.... I guess now Ladybird knows her little rider is better and can stick with her. ;)

Whoo!!! That is amazing. Heck sometimes I am afraid to lope my gelding sometimes. He can be full of it! I love when kids do something awesome!

LOL...I've always told the kids..."It's not IF you fall off, it's WHEN" and that they WILL go off someday. Luckily Dallas isn't that big. ;)

That's a good horse alright. They do know when to take care.

When Bay has really little ones on, he won't go above this death-walk shuffle. If he has a teenager aboard, he just goes where he wants (the barn) at whatever speed he wants. :D

Doesn't happen very often that we have kids or non riders here.

If we do, we'd probably put them on Cyn.

Bay would make either a really good school horse or a really bad one, depending on what you're looking for ;)

I've always said those old horses like Ladybird are worth their weight in gold when you have a little one.

Haha, Dakota is the same way!:D When I have my little cousins on him, he follows me everywhere, stops when I stop, walks when I walk, and will only trot if I run in front of him (and when my 6 year old cuz was on him--and she was scared--he would only walk reallyyyyyyy slow)
Alot of the time when I have him in the arena he's fired up and likes to give attitude- little hoppy bucks, head tossing, tail swinging, etc. But when the kids are around he turns into the perfect baby sitter.:)

yay!! good job cheyenne. one of our lesson ponies are like that. she loves the little kids.. when they start to go off one way she will even shift her weight o try to get them to stay on.. and if they start losing control she will stop.
