Ya, sure does sound like a wild night.
IF you get to keep him, Id ask your vet for info on them.
Im sure there are others here that have raised them and may know.

The only things I know about doxies in particular is you want to keep their weight down or it's really hard on their backs, and they're nippy little things, prone to be fairly aggressive to dogs and strangers.

When I dog-sat for a friend's parents who had one, I wore my english tall boots because the little ankle biter tried to get me every time I came in the door.

Other than that.... people who have 'em, like 'em. :)

Is that collar and tag something you put on him or was it on him already? He's a cute thing, if you found him it looks to me like he'd be the kind of dog someone would miss very much.

Google the phone number on the tag, including area code... You might get lucky and find it tied to a name and address that is the right one.

Wow! Maybe they moved or are visiting someone on vacation. Do you live in an area where you can post FOUND signs? Also go to your nearest animal shelter and make a profile for the found dog. You don't have to give the dog to them but if the owners go there looking they might be able to connect you two. Might want to check him for a micro ship too :)

Yeah before you decide to keep him or give him away you need to try to find his home............that is the first thing you need to do and if in a week or 2 no one claims him then make plans on what to do with his future

Dachshunds are pretty cool little dogs. They are yappers, but the ones I've been exposed to at the vets and at dog daycare were all pretty cool little guys. One of the few small breed dogs that wasn't as prone to bite first sniff later. I have my own long hair doxie. The breed is very prone to back/neck issues. You want to keep their weight down, a typical miniature dachshund should weigh between 10-12 pounds. Also, you want to watch them jumping on and off furniture, and if their back is particularly long watch them on stairs as well. Often if they injure the backs it is a permanent life long thing. In addition, vets often recomend using a harness while walking them instead of a collar, as it distributes pressure along their sides and not on their neck which can cause issues as well. Overall, they are active guys who love to run and chase things. My doxie is a better mouser than any cat I've ever had. He is rather protective of "his" space, more so than some of my others. However, its not unmanageable, and he's never tried to bite anyone. Out in "public" or "neutral" area he is small, fast, and vocal, but thats it.

He's adorable. And just a thought. If someone wanted to dump a dog they wouldn't leave his collar and tag on him. I bet he has an owner looking for him. We've lost my dog several times and I can't explain the panic that goes along with it. Look for posters, and post some in the area if you can. Is it a rabies tag that he has? If so you can call the vet in Missouri and they can tell you who the owner was.

Oh he is a cutie - Looks just like my 'Lucky' :)

Ditto on the back thing - I haven't had a problem yet myself, but one of my mom's doxies just did. He went on an experimental medication, but it won't work forever. Be careful of stairs and jumping on and off the furniture. Thankfully my bedroom is on the main level and I have the stairs gated off (no weinies on the second floor ;) )

I would not assume he's been abandoned, it's far more likely he just got away from his owner. I'd try to look up the name of the owner of the number you found in online phone directories.

I have to agree with EquineWoman. If I was(aint happening)gonna dump a dog, I sure wouldnt leave his name tag on. Missouri isnt that far. I see ILL, Kansas, Ok, ect plates here all the time. Seems these states have alot of people in different states they know. Could be, they stopped at a rest area, or some store, took the doggy potty and he ran off. Id google the phone number.

I'd call around to a few veterinarians that are near you and let them know you have the dog. Ask them to look the number or address (looks like its on the tag as well) in their system. They can search the name and breed as well to get info. Post on the found area of Craigslist. I know its common to think they've been abandoned when you find, them, when often enough its misfortune. If he was as panicked as you say when you found him, its even more likely he possibly got away from someone.

My daughter has a mini doxie and she is the sweetest thing ever. A real lap dog. She does bark daily at the mailman, but I think she gets excited because she knows that he has a cookie for her and she wants it. They can be yappy, but she is not too bad once she gets used to the sights and sounds around her. She gets along great with the German Shorthair Pointer. A real Mutt and Jeff duo! We do have sweaters for her because she does get cold easily. The vet suggested a harness instead of a collar because it is easier on the back. She wears a collar but she has a harness for walks. They are real chowhounds so you have to be careful that they don't carry too much weight.
To keep her from jumping off the couch, we got her a set of steps. She loves to be outside chasing the squirrels and birds in the yard.

Oh - Good! I hope they can keep their hands on him this time. ~and~ get his tag updated in case he pulls this again. :)

Good job keeping him safe till his owners were found.

I know it sure must be hard to let him go, but that is good he is back with his owners, I hope they don't let him run loose or get away from them again.

I have a doxie/lab and she is VERY much a people dog. In fact she goes into full blown fits in her kennel if we leave her at home. We can't leave her loose ANYWHERE in the house. She will literally destroy the floor next to the door or jump ANY gate to get out. She has to be kenneled.

However, when someone is home she is the PERFECT dog. She is 100% okay off leash, never barks, NEVER bites/nips/snaps and is generally the perfect dog. She would love to sleep in our bed, but we don't allow our pets up on furniture for aggression reasons. We try not to invite trouble. :D

Anyway, I'm so glad you found her owner. Was it hard to give him up? Did the people seem responsible? I think it's the worst when you have to give pets back to bad owners. :(
