The Republicans took the House. This has to be a huge blow to Ragnar and Tiz who I know have hung on nearly every word that the Honorable Speaker Pelosi has said over these past two years. :)

First the literal/liberal tease, now this?!?!?

Nancy Pelosi is a disgraceful woman who lied to the bitter end. She is the Poster Child, along with her main man Harry Reid, of how not to be a public SERVANT.

Goodbye, Nancy. I'm sorry you had 4 years to muck things up as bad as you did.

Congratulations on your new Guv, Jackie. I saw him in an interview and liked him. I wish him all the luck in the world. He's up against an enormous liberal/union machine there and he'll need it.

Wow. I'm surprised at the relief I feel. She really was a negative force in the House.

So there could actually be some light at the end of the tunnel.

Bye bye Nancy, hope you take old Harry Reid with you. (And Obama too)

Thanks. I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do. He seems very pragmatic to me. We need more pragmatism and less idealism.

It's true that Michigan has always been a very strong union state, but I think everyone knows now that that days of anyone (management or labor) being able to stand on unreasonable demands are behind. The demise of GM and Chrysler certainly proved that for our state.

Thanks. I'm not unhappy in the least. These things have a way of working out how they are supposed to in the US.

And although there are some nutcases in the Tea Party, I'm really glad they have burst onto the scene, even if I have to suffer through my least favorite political figures of all time. It's high time that both parties understand that there is enough power left in the electorate to take it back from them if we want.

I really liked when the Tea Party guy they interviewed said that the Republican Party had better be measured in its celebration because they are on probation for two years.

And, perhaps most importantly.... there will be no WA state income tax, and may they never try that again.

I don't think Reid was ever really in danger. One reason: SEIU. That's all you gotta know. It's not who votes that counts. It's who counts the votes.

So true. The polls had him down consistently, and yet he won. One of the most crooked creeps in DC goes back. I am not happy.

Dino needed about a ten point lead in WA to overcome the corrupt system there, so I hope you are mentally prepared to cope with Murray for another 6 years.

makes one think and out of all the canidates that was up for this, how in good GODS earth did Sharron Angle get in??? It kind of sounds fixed right from the start.

I really hope so. He's done enough damage and hopefully with things a little more balanced will put a rein on this runaway.

So does this mean it will be all sunshine and rainbows now? I don't think so. Will the massive amounts of unemployed people suddenly be able to get a job? not likely. Will the home foreclosures come to an end? No. It's just going to be more of the same, people need to realize it's not about being republican or democrat. Sorry but I'm just a little frustrated with the economy, being self-employed trying to run a small business at this day in time is not easy. Someone needs to come up with a solution and fast!

Cyb, the best thing government can do for the economy and your business is get out of the way. I hope they do that. :)

No. It's just going to be more of the same, people need to realize it's not about being republican or democrat.

You are certainly right about that. Recessions, unfortunately, pretty much have to run their course like influenza or food poisoning. There are some things the government can do to be helpful, and Bush and Obama did those things. Now we're in the waiting stage and hopefully toward the end of it.

President Obama is not a bad president - at all - in my opinion. But you all know how I feel about that already. This is just a sign of the times. Like coaches of professional sports teams, nobody really cares why you are losing. It's so frustrating to be in a recession that the sentiment is to throw everyone out.

Here's an interesting graph that shows the historical federal debt as a percentage of GDP, by the way. WWII needs to be factored out. We had absolutely no choice at that time. Otherwise, it's always been a bipartisan thing to spend our money in this way. I don't like it either because I don't do it in my own life, but the Republicans love to spend our money just as much as the Democrats - at least.

I think you're right. It's become 'not much different' in recent years. And I think that's why there's a Tea Party. I think they (we) want to leave Republicans behind too. Maybe particularly them.

Here's something that would have an instant and positive effect on the economy. Repeal every bit of legislation passed in the last four years.

That's a good graph. Debt as a %GDP really is the best measure. Though, I'd say that graph makes it pretty clear that it makes a great deal of difference who's in office, and in particular who controls the House. All spending begins in the House. Keep in mind, too, that the Democrats of decades past (esp in the 50's and even 60's) were far more conservative than the more recent and very much more liberal Dems. There's just an ocean of difference between a Scoop Jackson, for example, and a Barney Frank.

An overlay of the business cycle (booms & recessions) over that would be instructive as well, I think. I believe that FDR took what would have been a fairly modest recession and dragged it out ten extra years, deepening the Depression with his reckless over-the-top spending and borrowing. Likewise, I am certain that our economy would already be well into recovery and growth again, were it not for Obama and the Dems in Congress and their simply bottomless appetites for spending.

We're approaching WW2 debt levels again... without WW2 to demand it. That's an enormous problem.

I don't think it's the recession that inspired people to throw everyone out, J. It's the realization that this government is, has and will do exactly what they want to do, without the consent of the governed. That's what picked everyone's head up.

It has to be rolled back.

That is exactly what bothered me most. We can still work together, or our reps can still work together, when we don't agree on the "how."

This administration did too many things that people objected to too fast. It became apparent that the "governed" didn't matter.

Ragnar Danneskjold

Those are great points... at the heart of the Tea Party it isn't about the recession at all, but the response to it, plus all the other stuff (like the still-unknown Obamacare fiasco) that they rammed down our throats. They're governing not according to, but in spite of, the will of the people.

Recessions happen. It's called the Business Cycle. No boom, nor any bust, is forever. Left to itself the economy would recover without intervention. Cutting tax rates is the single best thing government can do. And there isn't much else. Most other intervention comes at a price, and will deepen and lengthen a recession. The ~worst~ thing a government can do is raise taxes. The next worst is to borrow and spend. All that does is suck down the supply of credit (like is happening) and add more burdensome debt (like is also happening).

I'm pretty sure that the current recession would've been history by now, and we'd have had at least a year of a growing economy with more jobs already... had they merely not blown all that funny money on "stimulus" spending. The "official" recession (as technically defined) was already effectively over when Obama took office, or not long thereafter. All he had to do was nothing, and it would've been better.

Exactly  and I don't have patience for that.
