View Full Version : Poor Lambo, I feel so bad

I was trimming his hooves & misjudged on one of his toes & made him bleed. It wasn't running out but there were a few drops. I put Wonder Dust on it to stop the bleeding & it stopped. I then put ointment on a bandage & wrapped the toe but the bandage feel off after a few minutes. It's no longer bleeding. He's not limping & never even flinched when I cut it.
The sheep vet isn't available until Monday. What should I do? I'm assuming he's UTD on a tetanus shot but I'm not sure.
I'm freaking out a bit here so any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks

He seems fine, even trotted on gravel. I'm a basket case though. When I check it now I can't see anything wrong. That doesn't mean some deadly disease isn't creeping its way in. I'm really upset.
Maybe I should find a sheep forum & ask about it?

Honestly, he should be just fine. We've done that before when trimming the goats' hooves. We try to be careful but sometimes it's hard to judge and it gets more difficult with the bouncy ones who won't stand still. Occasionally we'll cut a little too deep and they'll bleed a little. They usually don't even flinch and never limp on it, I sometimes wonder if they even felt it. We'll put some Hoof N Heel on it or a little iodine or really anything to clean it and let it go at that. They're always just fine and I'm sure Lambo will be too. He still loves you.:)
So don't worry yourself too much, alright? Usually you're the one saying that to me because I'm a panicker but I'm pretty confident that Lambo will be just fine.:)

Awww, Dakota able to give useful advice to her mentor.
Thinking of you and Lambo. I'm sure Lambo will be fine. And try not to be hard on yourself.

Thanks Dakota, I do feel better now. I was looking at the site that Vicklynn suggested (thanks Vicklynn:)), it's really good but OMG the things that can go wrong with sheep!!!

I hope Lambo is OK, poor baby. It does sound like he's OK from what Dakota said and he has alot of experience. I hardly ever "hear" you so stressed. Can you call your vet and just ask? He should have an answering service since they need to be able to be contacted in case of an ER. Maybe you have his home # I don't know but it might not hurt to call just to make yourself feel better. If you can't call him will Lambo ride in the car to go to an ER Vet? Hope all is well. I worry about everything too. I accidently knicked puppy's nail when cutting and since then she won't let anyone cut her nails, I created such a problem and it didn't even bleed I just cut it a little short [Her nails are black] I can touch her nails, play with them etc but as soon as she sees the clippers she freaks. Hugs to Lambo and maybe you need a drink!

Oh I'm sorry you had such scare. I think I feel worse for you than Lambo. Sounds he doesn't really care. :) Glad Lizzy gave you a good advice.
As I said before...you're such nice person. :)

I agree with Dakota. I had goats as my FFA project and I nicked them too. I always had Wonder Dust for them. I would however, get a tetanus shot for him! They are more susceptible to that than most other animals. I had a goat get it and managed to save her, but it was horrible and took a long time and medication (shots)

Good, I'm glad.:) I always feel really bad when we nick our goats too, but they hardly even feel it (if they do at all, most of the time they don't even flinch and seem oblivious) and it's really not something to worry about it. Lambo will be fine.:) I think it bothered you much more than it bothered him, if he was even aware that it happened.

IF it makes you feel any better I've done that to my kid (my human kid) Cut his nail just a bit too short and it bled. So I know how you feel! I'm sure Lambo will be as healthy as Wyatt is after he heals. Hugs

He's only 8 months old but he was dehorned, neutered & ear tagged. Would they have given him the shot then?
Could a horse vet give a sheep a shot, safely?

Actually he was like a month old. . . it's tough being a new Mom. I know I cried and cried and might have screamed and said I was throwing in the towel or some other nonsense like that lol

He should have been tet vaccinated then and yes a horse vet can give a sheep a shot and safely :) Lambo can have another tet shot, a booster if you will, it can't hurt and you would then have a date of vaccination for future reference.
