I have a toy aussie who gets motion sickness. We thought it was just car sickness (her getting sick in the car), but my husband's grandmother was rocking her in the rocking chair and she got sick, too! I'd love to take her traveling with me this summer, but I can't keep cleaning up after her. Someone suggested that I use Benadryl to "knock" her out for the trip. I haven't consulted my vet yet. I'll be doing that shortly. Just wanted to see if anyone had used anything else and had any luck?

Molly got sick in the car all the time when I first got her. I 'fixed' it by driving her around all the time. We went to town, we went to the store, to my aunt's and grandmother's house... she rarely gets sick anymore. I found that if I drove and got her out of the car just before she started gagging, the next time she could go even further. I did the same thing with my parents' daschund, and he doesn't get car sick at all anymore.

I do think to some degree, you just have to get her used to the motion.
I know with people, motion sickness is greatly improved if you can be up where you can see outside and see the horizon.... basically.... see something that isn't moving. It helps keep you oriented. Motion sickness is worse when you're inside and can't see out, like in a crate.

My sheepdog got sick when riding in the car from PA to Maine. The vet gave me some liquid Dramamine for him. It worked and he did not sleep the whole way. He was able to be in the car without getting sick. We made frequent stops along the way.Ask your vet what you can for her. Good luck.

My best friend has a dog that used to get really carsick. They drove him around all the time. Started out with short little trips and gradually worked up to longer rides. Another thing they do, which seems to work, is use dog treats with ginger in them. It's supposed to settle their stomach. Good luck! :)

Knocking her out with allergy meds is probably the best and quickest way to deal with the issue. I remember a episode of Mythbusters my wife watched where they were testing motion sickness. But I do not remember what "holistic" remedy they were trying to watch. We give our dog allergy meds for, guess this, allergies. As long as you watch the weight, you should be fine.

I'd consult your vet first, Benadryl seems kind of strong, but then I'm not a vet.

My vet recommends it all the time, I have a dog that cant stay out of trouble. She is always getting spider and snake bit, and thats what he says everytime I call, 1 mg per lb of body weight

Kevin's right on the dose for the Benadryl, but there's a good chance it won't work for motion sickness. You can try desensitizing, but our previous Jack Russell/ Rat Terrier had to be medicated with a script from the vet. She's no longer with us- but I'll see if I can find the name of the drug. We only paid like $10 for 30 pills.

My dog used to get motion sickness in the car and I combined almost all of these for her. First, she's small so I put pillows on her seat so she can see out the window. Then I used ginger (that's the ingredient Mythbusters proved to work). You can use ginger pills, ginger tea, or ginger ale (as long as you check the ingredients to make sure it really has ginger). Liquids absorb faster than the pills, so I usually used ginger ale, about an hour before the trip. Pills have to be given a couple hours prior. Last, we did this a lot! I take her everywhere. She runs all my errands with me, I take her to PetSmart and Petco regularly, etc. Only place she doesn't go is the barn... She thinks she's a horse killer, even though she's about the size of a large throw pillow and is going to get her head bashed in... I did all this because she is actually my family's dog, but comes and lives with me at school pretty often so she was getting shuttled back and forth the 2+ hours regularly and I felt bad for her. It worked very well, she never gets sick anymore. Good Luck :)
