Who's the manufacturer? Would be under (probably) the left front flap.

It just depends on the maker.

Well, depends on what you want to use it for... jumping? Or regular riding? I prefer a deeper, more dressage style seat, I like to ride with a longer leg and I don't do jumping. This seat looks pretty shallow. But then you may like that though. What brand is the saddle? Can't really say what it may be worth without knowing what it is.

Maker is going to be on the metal stud right at the front of the pommel. Don't really know until you figure that out. I'm thinking those purty stirrups are probably worth more than the saddle itself....

Will she let you bring the saddle over so we can see if it fits Misty or Whiskey? Someday I may let you ride in an actual saddle;)

...and see if it fits you. That looks like it is a big saddle, but it is a funny angle and it could be smaller than it looks here. I would bet it actually is a good name saddle, correctly squared, tight stitching, wool-flocked, nice patina, but it is old school and people just aren't buying close contacts without blocks and knees-so not a lot of resale. The pictures also make it look like it's time to be re-flocked.

I know the flaps are really curved because its been in a bag not really sitting right.

Well, it's a close-contact English saddle. I think you would be better off with an all-purpose saddle for what you will be doing with Misty.
But of course it's up to you. We'll try it on Misty and check the brand/condition/fit for you and go from there.

Exactly, lol. Plus those engraved irons are ridiculously priced!

For even general english riding, I would personally recommend a close contact over most all-purpose saddles... APs tend to not put you in a very balanced or correct seat. If you want more security, a deeper CC or just go with a dressage saddle, even if it's just a wintec. You'll be so much more bablanced. That's what I teach almost all the english lessons in at camp.

I have a close-contact Pessoa and I love it. :) I don't like the way a lot of stirrups hang on the all-purpose saddles, they tend to push my leg forward. I thought that that was just me though. I've always heard that APs are better if you're not jumping.. but I don't know much other than that.

Yeah, APs have a tendency to put riders in a chair seat. People tend to think of CCs as only jumping saddles, so that's why they will say to use an AP if you're not jumping, but there is nothing wrong with riding in a CC without jumping... We don't switch to APs for flat classes at shows, lol. I trail ride and do all sorts of other things in mine.

Btw, I have heard the name Whippy before. Looked it up again and it was a brand from England that wen out of business in the 60's, then the name was picked up by another maker and used for a while, but they went out of business about 25 years ago as well. From all accounts they're average saddles. Nothing remarkable, but definitely better than any new HDR or Kincade piece of junk you might find, and the leather is solid quality. If it's a decent fit (for you and Misty), and in good shape (hard to tell from the pic) I wouldn't offer more than $125 for it... If you sit in it and fall in love though, then it's worth whatever you're willing to shell out...

I'd try several different kinds to see which suits yo best. I tried a few saddles, different styles and different brands..... some I could not even keep my balance in, and some jabbed me in the leg too much..... I found a dressage saddle was best for me. But then I wasn't doing any jumping or anything like that.

I have a really cheap no name saddle. It's held up for years mainly because I never use it :p It's an AP & the flaps are so far forward my legs are barely on them. I like CC the best but then I don't ride English.
I think MG will do fine in a CC when I get done with her.;)

It appears to be a close contact saddle and if you want to "try" English....I would recommend a Dressage saddle or an All Purpose saddel. I find that unless you want to jump or cross country...a close contact puts you too far forward.

Just my opinion.

Good point, the CC saddles flaps won't be in the correct place for your leg. Dressage would be best if you aren't going to be doing any jumping, it will place your leg in the right position, CC won't. There are some nice AP saddles out there too.

Going to have to disagree - a nice, balanced CC that fits the rider should not put them too far forward (you mean leg, I assume). IMO, an "all purpose" puts the rider's leg too far forward in most cases. I ride in my CC for everything, I love it! I had a Stubben AP at one point and it put my leg way more forward than my County CC does.

I'm a close contact fan, too. For many purposes.

It's like ice cream. Everyone has their favorite, that's why there are so many flavors, but it's all ice cream.
