I don't know that much, but I'd really like to learn. I learned a little bit on an online course, but I can only say simple sentances like "I need to go to the bank." I'm planning on moving to Mexico for a year soon, so I better learn fast :D

That's an excellent trait sugars - I wish I had it. I pick up the words really quickly - I'm great at vocab... it's the putting-the-words-together, in the proper order that I have issues with.

Other day a friend of mine was doing her french homework, and I was "helping" (read: distracting). She asked if I knew a foreign language and I told her all I needed to know was "Yo no hablo espanol." So she asked me what I would do if they spoke another language, like French.

I think looking at them and saying 'Yo no hablo espanol' would get the point across. :D

Mexican Spanish and Spain ( Castillian) Spanish are different. I grew up with a bunch of kids who were native Mexican Spanish speakers who could barely pass the Castillian (Spain) Spanish Classes taught in school.

Some of the words will be the same or similar, but there are some significant differences.

IN other words, don't rely only on the Spanish they teach you in school to get you by when you get to Mexico.

I would probably say that is the difference between proper spanish and slang spanish and the difference in regional dialects. Happens with English too.

I think you missed the point. The point is that zoel_222 said

My response was specific to that situation. Zoel_222 won't do well in Mexico speaking Castillian Spanish. Sure some of the words are the same, but many are not. Many Native Mexican spanish speakers don't understand alot of the Castillian spanish. Enough so they they have struggled to pass a class in High School or College. They take the class thinking it will be a "Cake" class and then they struggle to get through the class.

Zoel_222 should not at all rely on learning Castillian Spanish only because it won't at all be the same in Mexico.

Hobo - I am a Spanish teacher and I learned "proper" Spanish in school and then did my study abroad time in Mexico. I had absolutely NO problem being understood in Mexico. Sure a few words are different in Mexico from the Castillian Spanish, however that depends on what part of Mexico you go to. Also, the Spanish spoken by Mexican-Americans can differ from Spanish spoken in Mexico. It tends to be regional. The main difference between the Spanish spoken in Spain (Castillian) and "Mexican" Spanish is the vosotros form and the accent. Other than that learning Spanish in school WILL be perfect for going abroad to Mexico. A lot of times people that grow up in the U.S. speaking Spanish aren't literate in it and don't learn proper grammar - this is why they end up taking Spanish classes even though they already speak it - and it's also why many struggle with Spanish classes, because they never learned the proper grammar and they say "well that's not how I speak it" even though it's correct grammar even in Mexico! It's like an English speaker taking English classes, they aren't necessarily easy for everyone!
