That's my father in law in the pics.

And it bugged the heck out of me that the article writer kept calling it an "autopsy" duh on animals its a "necropsy"

Sad the mountain lion was killed though. But after being shot by startled Amish it couldn't just be left wounded. Maybe if they had the internet they would know more about them and could have just scared it off the property. Silly Amish.

I'm not sure if you're kidding or not with your last comment. What do you think the Amish don't understand about cougar? :) They were doing a "predator sweep". I bet there was some cause, in killed livestock, for them to do that.

I don't think any cougar who has allowed himself to be seen, close enough to be in the range of a shotgun, should just be 'frightened off'. I think big cats in nature are very very cool. But I also think we have a right and a duty to protect our own. I'm not sure why the authorities always want to deny their existence. It's not unheard of for there to be cougar in any rural place that has deer. We have them. But our state wildlife people don't deny it. We have a hunting season for them. It is the "protected" cougar who becomes a danger to people.

Yeah I was kinda kidding. In that area there are so few mountain lions that they RARELY interfere with people or livestock. In this case there were 60+ amish sweeping a property for coyotes and they came upon the cat. If it was just a person or two it probably would have avoided them and they would have never known it was there.

Yes LaPlata is like 10 min from Kirksville.

Dang... and since they're Amish they can't even make a cool cougar-fur jacket out of it.

Yah? I suppose... I haven't had any. Venison, bear, elk, sheep... sure. But no cats. Actually, I would expect it to be really stringy, gamey, and seriously lean and tough. But I dunno...

Not stringy or gamey at all.

We debone, and the cuts are the same as for deer and elk. Backstrap is especially good.

what she said, next to moose it is the best game I have ever eaten, my ex fil used to adopt greyhounds off the track in Riudoso and train them to hunt lions, he always had a freezer full of meat........Kevin

I have to agree Kevin. In the 70's they claimed the Florida Panther(A sub species of Mountain lion) was extinct. Then they finally found a small population of them after locals had been telling them for years that there were still Panthers around. My Mother saw one in S Ga.(Near the Okefenokee Swamp, a VERY heavily forested area on the Ga.-Fla. line) and told my Uncle who was a game Warden at the time. You should have heard the "Official" response, But actually my Uncle really believed her.... it was his sister after all, which both of them had seen them or heard them when younger. Also she wasn't the only one who had reported sightings of one in that area. However as most were at night or at a distance, crossing roads or in dim light, officials claimed it was "Light playing tricks" on what they saw. But until they had "Proof" the officials wouldn't admit it.

We have one that comes through here every so often and for a couple of nights all the horses and dogs in the area go nuts.......Kevin
