Text message blows up suicide bomber by accident

By Andrew Osborn, The Daily Telegraph January 26, 2011

A "Black Widow" suicide bomber planned a terrorist attack in central Moscow on New Year's Eve but was killed when an unexpected text message set off her bomb too early, according to Russian security sources.

The unnamed woman, who is thought to be part of the same group that struck Moscow's Domodedovo airport on Monday, intended to detonate a suicide belt near Red Square on New Year's Eve in an attack that could have killed hundreds.

Security sources believe a message from her mobile phone operator wishing her a happy new year received just hours before the planned attack triggered her suicide belt, killing her at a safe house.

There's an inherent risk when using a cell phone as your trigger device...

Crummy time for a wrong number or a spam text.

I've got a photo taken by an EOD bomb technician, of a cell phone he pulled off an IED after disarming it. The photo is a closeup of the little Nokia's screen, with the message "1 missed call" on it.

Gives me shivers.

Well, score one point in favor of spam then!

It's 1,456,845,714 to 1..... But it's something :)

Maybe there's a nugget of a useful idea here... bombers like to use those cheap disposable, untraceable, pre-paid phones. I mean... who wants to waste $300 on a fancy iPhone 4 just to blow it up? Even suicide bombers have more sense than that.

OK... so ask the phone companies to send out some little spam text messages to those kinds of pre-paid phones at random times during the day. Free of charge, of course. Makes it darn frightful to get stuck in traffic while you're on your way to your suicide bombing. :)
