HaveFaith and I met up with some other trail buddies yesterday at KC's Horse Camp, near Double Springs, AL. The weather was much nicer than on Saturday, so that's why we waited.

I rode my gelding, Bob, and HaveFaith rode her 2yr old filly named Sassy. This was Sassy's longest and possibly most challenging trail ride to date, but she did really well. Nothing seems to phase her. We went through creeks, deep mud, slid down muddy hills and across downed trees and she just went right along like she'd done it all her life.

We had another newbie with us too, in the form of a 13yr old girl who is the daughter of my trail buddy's friend. This was her first "real" trail ride and she did outstanding. All I can say is the girl must have a velcro butt! ;) But I do have to give a lot of the credit to the horse she was riding. Blade is really good at taking care of his riders. I raised him, but he's spent the last 3 years with my friend and she's added the polish to his diamond-in-the-rough.

We had a great ride so I thought I'd share a few pics, for those of you whose riding season is over...

A lot of the trails here follow creek beds at the base of bluffs.
It's really nice in the heat of the Summer, but very pretty no matter the season...

He also took care of me on my first ever gaited-horse ride! :) A good guy indeed.

Glad to see you back home in the cliffs and rocks, you've been adventuring to new places lately! I love the cliffs and caves!

Well, now that the leaves are coming off the trees it's getting to be the time of year to be when they can be fully appreciated. You can't see them very well the rest of the time. And going to the new places makes going back to the old places more special, since you see them less often.

Thanks! These are the trailing edge of the Appalachians and quite beautiful in places. Not as breathtaking as the Rockies, but they'll do for a "backyard" ride. ;)

Oh, that is so not fair! What I would give for a nice ride right now and not have to deal with a lot of mud and rain! Thanks for sharing!:)

Love the scenic trail ride pictures you took. Looks like everyone had a great time. Did not know it is like that in parts of Al.

Well I'm glad y'all enjoyed the pics. I try to take at least a few on every ride, so I should be able to take you on a vicarious ride most all winter long.

Wintertime is some of our best riding weather down here. We very seldom get any snow and it only gets down below freezing for a couple of weeks in late January or early February, so we can usually manage to ride at least one day every weekend. And with all the leaves gone you can actually SEE where you're going. That's the part I like! And no bugs of course. ;)

This is the only good one I got before my battery died. We rode up to an old road bed in the woods and were just standing talking before resuming the ride. I turned around on Sassy to look at the others and this big doe was just standing in the road looking at us. She wasn't 30 yards away. Then she started walking towards us. We were talking, horses moving, taking pics, and one even walked towards her to get a better pic. Then someone said there were 2 of them. Behind the trees on the right, there was a BIG wall-hanger of at least 8 points. He even walked towards us half step at a time. After several minutes the doe just ambled off up the slope to the right and he followed her at a slow walk, big rack just shining! It was a beautiful sight and even better that they didn't seem afraid and flee as soon as we saw them.

That one turned out pretty good! I didn't figure she'd show up in the picture at all because she was blending into the background so well in real life. Cool!
