View Full Version : Barn Owner is jackin around *vent*

After I got Cawl, I was told that he needed to be moved (by the guy I got him from. This is what he'd been told by the BO). OK fine, I understand. The problem is it's not that easy to find places to board horses around here anymore. So, when I talked to Zack (not the bo's name but we'll call him that) I asked him if I couldn't find a place for Cawl to go, if he could stay there in the barn for the winter? He got this shocked look on his face and said "you're moving Cawl? Why?"
"Well, ummmm, yah I was going to move Cawl but all I wanted to know is if he could stay here incase I couldn't find a decent place for him".
He said to me that Cawl was more than welcome to stay and he'd gotten used to him being around and we could have the barn for the winter for him during the night & really extra cold days.
So, last Saturday when I was out there I asked Zack if I could have a key to the barn because it's getting to be bitterly cold out durning morning chores, so would be nice to be able to take the old guy in and let him eat in the barn. Not too mention Zacks horses are a major PITA and in your face all the time.
He turned around and snapped "haven't you found a place for him yet? Brad is the only one who's allowed to have a key so no you can't"
I was talking to Brad today, and he said that Zack had phoned him last night and had found someone to take Cawl (as in own him). He was really interested in him, so Zack was going to send him into the shop today to talk to Brad about getting Cawl.
Brad just said that it wasn't his horse to get rid of, and that I have paid board on him for every month that I've had him, and that if this guy wants him so bad, he needs to talk to me. Zack wouldn't hear it though, according to him Cawl is still Brad's horse.
WTH??? Did I miss something? I have paid board on him up till the end of Nov so pretty sure Cawl can stay right the hell where he is for now, and if Zack doesnt like it, he can give me some of my board back & I'll move him. I have found a few places now that I have to go look at, but between work & family & the horses I haven't been able to get out there yet. Plus Im still waiting to hear back from 2 places about boarding.
Why would Zack try to give away my horse? What gives him the right? My board is paid, my horse is always fed & well looked after, I've done nothing but bust my ass around there trying to help him clean the place up, and improve it, but as soon as Im stuck in a bit of a rut he shows his true colours.
My head was spinnin when I was done talking to Brad, and so God help Zack the next time I see him......He'll get the what for from me. If he insists that the horse be moved by the weekend, I want some of my board money back. Normally wouldn't be such an arse about it, but in this case, if he's not willing to give me back any money, Im not willing to move my horse until Nov 30
Well, congratulations to you if you managed to read till the end. Sorry for venting, but I had to unload. I just hope that I don't go there some morning and my horse is missing.
Be glad you're not married to him
Sounds like a good place to be from. He sounds like a kook.

He wouldn't hurt your horse while you're looking for a place to move to, would he?

Ok, is this Zack guy old? Senile? Does he not know that you bought the horse, or does he think you just take care of the horse? I think Id talk to Zack again, find out what he thinks, then talk money and boarding, and what Brad told you in the beginning. Is there a contract? Do you have a receipt for the money?

It sounds like Zack is whacked!!! I would take my horse somewhere else and leave Zack in the clouds (like he already is)

None of that makes a lick of sense!
Unless Zack is just nuts, which is possible, maybe you just need to have a good conversation with him. It could be that you're assuming the communication has been better than it has been, and he doesn't even know you're the owner of the horse now.

It would be almost funny if I didn't know how much it hurt you! What a dork.

The soundest advice I could ever give is move the horse. Right now. Yes, you've paid up till the end of the month, but it might be best to move ASAP. Get the horse to another barn where he won't disappear on you, and then try and get your money back from the barn owner. Waiting until the 30th sounds really risky.
Also, have you got some kind of paperwork on file? Not a contract or anything, but a bill of sale, or a Coggins test in your name? Anything that you can show anyone that this horse is yours.

LOL, I knew it!! I just get so frustrated that my mind goes faster than my fingers and everything comes out in a big fit-fest of words!!
Yah, Zack is a whacko. I want to move Cawl really bad because Zacks so hot & cold. He says one thing then another and completely contradicts himself always. I don't have a bill of sale, but I could get one. I maybe should, although I know there is no way Brad would let him get rid of the horse on me. When I was talking to Brad yesterday about it, he told Zack that the horse wasn't his (Brads) anymore and this guy who supposedly wants him so bad, needs to talk to me....the owner.
Zack knows he doesn't own the horse, but he's just that way. Brad said that we could talk for days about Zack and his stupidity & as far as Brad is concerned, Zack is a "professional bullsh*ter".
I was really happy last night, I had found a place where feed was all included, they had an indoor riding arena, nice pens, the whole nine yards, and they were going to take him. Then the guy talked it over with his wife and called to tell me they can't take him now because she reminded him that they have a waiting list. :(
Brad has talked to another person who boards, and was telling me about it yesterday, so I'll talk to him again about them when I go into work this afternoon. There is also another lady who does, but she's 47 Km outta town, so it's a little far, but obviously going to be better than where he is right now.
Anyways, I gotta go. Thanks for the responses & I'll try to keep you all updated on the "days of my life"! lol
I know that Zack wouldn't hurt Cawl, he just wants him moved, and for some reason it has to be NOW all of a sudden. I plan on talking to him (zack) again because you can't be trying to give my horse away, that's retarded.

GEEZ that sounds like a bad situation about to get worse! I'd try to find a place ASAP to move your horse. Before something serious happens. I boarded at a place like that, and it was very unsettling to leave and wonder if your horse was begin taken care of like he should be. Best of luck with finding a new place SOON!

Wow, I guess talking with Zack is not going to do any good. I sure hope you find something soon. To bad about the wife remembering the waiting list. Can ya look in the newspaper, ask around, vets, feed stores, see if they know ANYONE with a place, even if its temporary, until you can find exactly what you want. Id move that horse fast. Good luck.

Zack sounds bipolar to me!!!
That's exactly what I said to Brad yesterday. We haven't ruled it out
It really is too bad about the other place falling through. It was close to wear he is now, I would have just led him over. I know Zack wouldn't be able to get near him, the BO there is REALLY protective of the horses that reside there not to mention his oversized, nasty tempered GSD that preys on the malicious!
I will phone that other lady today from work. I know she has room, so the sooner I can move him out the better. I am shooting for the weekend (hopefully.....keeping my fingers & toes crossed).
I'll keep you guys updated on Cawl & his big move & also probably rant here some more about Zack the big fat stupidy head before I move my poor baby.

Are you telling possible boarders about your situation? I think I would be more understanding about someone coming to my place if they told me about Zack maybe trying to sell him to someone else when he isn't his, etc.
Definitely get a bill of sale. If something goes wrong, and let's hope it doesn't! You have proof he is yours, etc.

Yah, I have told people. The problem is hay.....that is what it all boils down to. People don't want to take winter boarders because they only have enough hay to feed their own and the boarders that are already there. The guy that was going to take him was totally understanding about my situation. At first he said that they don't have room & asked why I was in such a hurry to move him. When I told him everything that's been going on, he said they have 1 area he could go & I was supposed to go check it out today, but then he called last night & told me his wife said not to bother because of this waiting list.
I know of another place that definately has room, I was going to call her today from work. We'll see how that goes. The reason I don't really want to go there though is she's so far out of town, I would hardly get to go see him compared to now where Im out there every single day. At this point though, I am not going to be picky about it, and just toughen up & do what's best for Cawl & I, which is get him the hell outta where he is now.

It's so, so upsetting when you are boarding and something like this happens. I've been through it many times. I always felt like the crazy BO might do something to hurt my horse out of spite. Thank God, that never happened but I did have angry BOs steal my tack and blankets for spite.
I would stay in touch with the other barn, make yourself know (as a nice person) and they may offer you a spot. Keep us posted.

I can kinda relate. My horse was at a barn originally, and it was getting bad. They had like 50 horses, he only got hay everyday, no grain, which I like him to have a little bit of grain. I moved him from there to one a half mile from my house, which was nice, but he was being bullied by the other two horses, then I moved him to a friends for training for a month and he got kicked out of the second barn (the close one) because he was supposedly breaking the fence, that wasn't hot to begin with like it was supposed to be...any who, he is 12.5 miles away, but he is happy and healthy. By all means move him to a better place, this guy sounds like a complete nut! Even though he will be farther away, you will feel better if he is in a better place, I promise:D Good luck and please keep us updated!

Thanks WP! I really just want to move him out of Zacks nuthouse at this point. I can look for something closer later, but for now, I just have to get him the heck outta there. I will definately keep you posted.
I haven't talked to Brad today to see if the guy who wanted him came in to talk to him. Brad was just going to say that Cawl wasn't his horse & he'd have to talk to me. Thank God Brad is normal!

I boarded for 7 or 8 years, which are now referred to as the years from hell. I never had ANY good experiences boarding horses. There is always a "barn witch" and always way too many people putting their noses in your beeswax giving unasked for advice. I've got horror stories that would curl your hair. Imagine finding formaldahyde poured over your horse's hay (our vet at the time was a witness to this), or having the hinges of your tack room removed so someone could steal your new clippers?
And I agree, Zach sounds nuts, get out of there ASAP!

Well I was out feeding Cawl this morning, and pretty sure I have frost bite on my fingers simply because Im not allowed to have a key to the barn. How stupid is that? I posted a "wanted to board my old horse" ad on our local website for town here & already have a response from a couple who live just 3 miles SW of the city. There's a barn for shelter, corrals & pasture. I am waiting to see what the price is, hopefully not retarded amounts of $$ but who knows.
I emailed them back & asked how much & when I can come see it. Hoping for tomorrow to be able to go see since I now have to work this weekend.

Boy what a nasty situation. You had better get that bill of sale & let Zack know you have one. Best of luck in finding a safe place for you & your horse. Who locks a barn?

Who locks a barn?
Zack does, the stunted little (insert nasty dirty filthy language here)....well you get the idea!
Can't wait to hear back from these people who are just outside of town here.

Well, guess what!!!!!!
I have been on the hunt hugely for a new place for Cawl. I got an email yesterday from a lady who was only 3.5Km outta the city here! She emailed me back today and to my suprise, her board is crazy cheap!!
It will cost me $100 a month plus $1/day for feed!!!! There is a barn there, shelter, nice people, other boarders, and lots of critters! She seems really really nice & completely understands why I want to leave Zacks place right away! She is going out of town today, but Im going to try to get there tomorrow before work, and hopefully be able to move him this weekend!!!
So, that's the latest & Im sooooo happy!! Cawl will be safe & worry free soon enough!

***UPDATE***
Cawl goes on Sunday to his new place! We are moving him just south of town. The people have a great big barn, they live on site, and they actually seem to know something about animals! Im so excited & can't wait...only 2 more sleeps then I don't have to deal with Zack anymore!! hahaha!

GOOD!
Glad to hear things worked out for Cawl.
Better to have him elsewhere where Zack can't get to him. And make sure you have all your records of vaccinations, etc. etc. Proof of paperwork is a good thing.

That's great it worked out, I was reading your posts and all I could think of was "oh gosh move him soon", I know how hard it is to find a good boarding stable....I once boarded my horses a good 30 miles away in another town just to have them at a safe place and to get away from a bad situation at another barn. The new place you found sounds just perfect for Cawl.....let us know how it goes!

Thanks everyone, and I will forsure keep everyone updated. The lady is very nice, the hubby was a little nervous of taking on another boarder. I guess they have had a lot of trouble with boarders. He came off as kind of a jerk, but I honestly don't think he is. I think he was just being very assertive and laying down the expectations & rules. No crap kinda guy....just my type! lol
There is a big place in the barn that will be able to be used to teach riding lessons in. Cawl might be able to pay for his own board. I have a student but we had to shut down for winter because it's just to nasty outside. They said if I find somewhere indoors, we could start up again. So we'll see how Cawl settles in. I want to make sure he's going to be good there & we're not going to have issues with the other horses or anything like that. He (Cawl) seems to have a soft spot for kids, so maybe seeing my riding student & my sons more often will perk the old guy up a bit!
It's just so relieving to not have to worry about going to Zacks place anymore. He can have his falling down barbed wire, his twine infested pastures, his 1/2 standing corrals, and his 1/2 dead mean goat. He can have his horses "all to himself" and his coveted barn again.
All I did to him was help him clean that place up. I picked up more wood that had fallen, twine that had been carelessly left in the pasture (actually almost strangled his goat 2x....thank God I was there to save his life....2x). I always paid my board on time. I was nice, respectful & curteous.
He's just an ass though obviously, and I can't wait to be finished with him.
Plus his stallion is UGGGGGGGLY! Should have been born a gelding & he's just an arse who doesn't know a horses head from it's arse & in my opinion, just made a huge mistake! Sorry for the mini rant, just felt good to say it! can't wait to say it to him!
