To update, last week I posted about whether I should keep my 2 year old Paint filly or get an older horse who's done evrything. Well, I put the word out and it turns out my neighbor bought her and is going to break her to drive so I'm very happy with where she's at :) . So hopefully the new horse can come this weekend. I need an alternative name to "Buckley" , a horse who is 14 years old and it's the only name she's ever had. Gol, it's just not feminine or sassy or anything remotely, well pretty. She's buckskin and whoever named her based it on her color. Is she too old to rename? What's your take?

Well I am no help on names. I kept the horses names that came with them when I bought them. They were like your new one. Same name for the last 12 years + and I felt bad about changing them. So they are Norman and Booty. Booty is a mare.. not a great fan of the name, but it's alright.

Norman is Norman. :) Even my farrier said, "I've never seen a horse look more like a Norman than this one."

in my oppinion it depends.Does she know her name? or does she jsut ignore anyone when they say buckley, and has no clue its about her?

Well, she was a ranch horse, and those cowboys lassoed whatever horse outta the herd and used them all day, and they called her Buckley. Then her owners got her and they have alot of horses and the last few years she wasnt ridden much, they felt it was wasting her talent which is why they offered her to me (I've been looking for a broke horse). They've always called her Buckley too when they worked with her. But man, it's just such a boring name

I've renamed 2 horses who were 8yo and never had a problem with it - of course, they didn't have names when I got them ("that black pregnant mare over there" and "the arab-looking one" don't really count!).

Frankly, I just don't think the horses care - for the most part, as long as you love on them and feed them enough, they'll get used to most any name/place/person eventually.

It's never too late to rename a horse, I say go for it! I am in the process of renaming my mare, she is 3 years old, however doesn't really know her name......but, I think it is just fine renaming a horse.

I'm not experienced with horses, but I'd say rename her to whatever name you like. I just got a horse few weeks back. She is almost 3 years old.
I named her what I liked and I say it a lot when I'm with her. I think she learned it already. Comes over when I call her.

I've told this story on the other forum, but when my daughter and I moved from NY to VA, we got our first horse from a neighbor. Her name was Cora. A bit old fashioned, but we neer really gave much thought tp changing it, The neighbor (man) came by once in awhile to see how we were doing, then one day abt 8 months later he said " I see you changed he name abit" Puzzled we questioned him further. Turns out our yankee ears heard Cora, while her name was really Corey !!!!???? We still call her Cora.

I'd rename her if that's what you want. I;ve renamed a 6 year old(Princess to Raen), a 7 year old(Snickers to Melee), and i'm about to rename a 12 year old(Misty to Harmony.. possibly) when she gets here. :D

I would rename her if you dont like the name. Even if she is used to the name Buckley it won't be long til she's used to the new name. I almost always rename my horses just to finish making them my own. Rodeo & Cawl are the exceptions to the rule, but I loved Rodeo's name & Cawl is a great name in my opinion, because I've NEVER heard it before & it suits him.

If you dont like the name, give'er & change it up! Pick something you like

I renamed my horse when I got her at 13. It took her a bit to get used to it (and for me to get used to it also) but now she doesnt come to anything else. I need pictures for name ideas XD but I'd be glad to help with naming. I love that.

I think a horse responds more to your voice than its name after time. So if you repeat [insert new name here] over and over the horse will learn it quickly.

My new horse is 9 and I don't call her by her registered name (like she is used to) but by a nick name McGower, and she comes running to me screaming every time.

I say change it if you want. I have changed horses names to. The last one was a 8 yr old TWH. I got him from two good ole country boys that just called him the black since he was a 2 yr old. My son renamed him Darth he came to it right off.

Sometimes it's nice to re-name your new horse.....sort of makes him or her more your horse, if that makes sense?!
