Has anybody else heard of this "Victory in Iraq Day"? I just received an email about it.
According to the statistics that are listed:
It is now more dangerous to walk the streets of most major American cities than it is to be stationed in Iraq. For example, Chicago, just a single city in the United States, all by itself experienced twice as many shootings and killings of Americans as did the entire nation of Iraq over recent months

It's not an official thing, it's organized by a coalition of blogs. http://www.zombietime.com/vi_day/
Casualty levels, both Iraqi civilian and US military, are now at the lowest level since the war began. You can check out this report from the Brookings Institute for loads of stats and graphs that demonstrate this. http://www.brookings.edu/saban/~/media/Files/Centers/Saban/Iraq%20Index/index.pdf (http://www.brookings.edu/saban/%7E/media/Files/Centers/Saban/Iraq%20Index/index.pdf)

I have been told by many people have visited and have always been told how impressed they were with not only city but its people..........can't say the same for Irag...........and I have a bil over there staying in Saddam's former palace.
What is your point?

Gracious.
Personally, I've never walked in Chicago. Or Iraq. It wasn't *my* quote, though, just an interesting one I saw. From what I've heard of Chicago, I'd be afraid to walk the streets there. Just like, living so close to Juarez I am unwilling to cross the border AT ALL due to stories from there. Speaking of which, my guess is that Juarez is a MUCH greater danger zone than Iraq right now - the death toll has been staggering this year.
My point was ... has anybody heard of Victory in Iraq day? Just like I said. I find hope that the war really is pretty much over. If you disagree with that, I really would like to hear WHY, exactly, you feel that the war is still going strong. Beyond just having troops over there, as we have them across the globe.

I think the point is there's some reason for optimism in Iraq. And some would like to celebrate that.
Now, if we could just clean up the quagmire in our own cities. :)

Well I haven't heard of it but I'm glad to hear things are more peaceful than before. I would just hope it's not some propoganda to convince us here that it's time to pull out. Our troops are the reason it's better over there.

I think a significant portion of it had to do with the Iraqi Council signing some agreement - I'm pretty sure the agreement is for a very gradual removal of forces (over many years).
